Thank you @LakieLady , I'll look into that.

I've been given a website too with CEO email addresses, my last ditch effort is going to be to email the CEO and tell them to sort it.

Reminding myself that there are people worse off than me. This is going to take us to our financial limit, I'm worried for the people who are already at their limit or over it now Sad

I’m trying to work out my usage and how much my bill will likely to be if anyone can help. We’re with Bulb on standard variable tariff. We’ve only been on our house (5 bed detached just 3 of us and not copious users of energy) a year and Bulb estimate our yearly use for dual fuel will be around £2000. I assume this doesn’t include the new price cap which would make our annual bill around £3800. That’s around £360 a month, and with the government discount will bring in down to £250 a month over the winter.

Do theses figures sound about right? I’m just trying to work out what our usage will cost us.

We are also £1000 in credit and currently paying £200 a month DD.

Can we round up a posse and head off with some sarin gas to visit one little man in Russia yet?

@LakieLady my dad got one and LOVES it
It helped that the one he got has shelves and basically looks like a mini oven
I sold it to him as no preheating and ideal for single portions

This type

I have the digital version of it

I am physically sick with worry.
I just don’t know how I’ll manage.
A single person paying all bills?
I just can’t cover it.
Im not a high earner ( but not old enough to get the “ Help”.
I’m terrified.

cakeorwine · 26/08/2022 11:44

The thing about the price cap is that it's the October announcement.
But people use more gas in January and February when it's colder and the price cap will be increased then - so the yearly 'cost' is deceptive.

I have my spreadsheet which really helps work out such costs - and I pay monthly so I have a good idea of what the cost will be and I can budget

Pyewhacket · 26/08/2022 11:44

Utilities our own shale gas.

Rosehugger · 26/08/2022 11:45

It's crazy. I also don't know if Bulb already included likely price rises in our annual cost or what. I have tried not to build up too much credit with them in case they did get sold, as I know other people have had an absolute arseache getting "protected" credit taken into consideration by the new company. But we will have some credit at least.

FarmerRefuted · 26/08/2022 11:45

I remember when DH and I first moved in together as skint students to a shitty bedsit with single glazing and no central heating. We used to make dinner in the oven then leave the door open afterwards so the heat dissipated into the room as the oven cooled down while we sat in bed wearing hoodies and cuddling to stay warm.

Didn't think I'd be considering a revival of that over twenty years later. Not so romantic or bohemian though when you're in your 40s.

Push comes to shove I could fatten up the dog and/or one of the children to see us over the winter.

(It's a joke, don't @ me).

If you are on the standard rate now the increase will affect you. If you know your kwh usage for gas and electric use that as it will be accurate. When you get the figure based on annual consumption divide that by 12 to equal out the payment for summer and winter. Some companies want you to pay more in winter. Bear in mind there is another increase due for Jan- Mar 23 and again for April 23.

dottypencilcase · 26/08/2022 11:29

Why aren't we all protesting on the streets for this? The energy companies are all having a laugh at our expense.

I don’t know-
British people just lie down and take it- The French don’t.

EmmaH2022 · 26/08/2022 11:47

Can this be summarised as

your bill won't go higher than 3 x what it is now?

crossstitchingnana · 26/08/2022 11:47

nellytheelephant1980 · 26/08/2022 07:35

And my figure above is before we've put the heating on, which we just won't be able to do this winter

That's horrendous. Do you have a big house?

Lemonblossom · 26/08/2022 11:47

Before anyone goes buying an air fryer, do just check your microwave. An air fryer is not a fryer at all, its just a convection oven. Many microwave ovens already have a built in convection oven. We use ours all summer when the range is turned off.

Rosehugger · 26/08/2022 11:49

Mumsnet could organise a protest or we could do it through MN. It has a massive audience now.

Even from a right-wing capitalist perspective, people need to be able to budget and have money to spend on Stuff that is not Energy.

Thanks for the link. I’ve just seen Martin Lewis has linked it on Twitter. I’ve worked out our annual use based on our kwh usage and that is saying £3620 a year, so around £300 a month. I know it’s going up again in January and then in April. I’m trying not to think about that right now!

Arenanewbie · 26/08/2022 11:51

@EmmaH2022 the bill will roughly double if you will use the same as last year.

nellytheelephant1980 · 26/08/2022 09:05

Blaming Russia for this drives me mad. This was predicted several years ago, long before the Ukraine war. We only get 4% of gas from Russia FFS.
And BJ standing there saying 'this is the price we all pay for standing up to Putin'. Oh Fuck off. He doesn't have to pay anything as we the tax payer pay his bills. France etc is also supporting Ukraine and they only had a 4% rise.

I feel desperately sick. I don't know how we will afford this and we are both professionals

@nellytheelephant1980 the situation with gas from Russia isn't only (or even majorly) about what WE buy from them. It's complicated, but what other countries buy from them directly impacts on the market that we buy & sell in. VERY basically, the countries that were buying from Russia are now buying from our suppliers pushing the price up.

I think I might just die. God almighty, what a fucking mess.

pointythings · 26/08/2022 11:54

So our Chancellor of the Exchequer's contribution is to say that we should all consider 'reducing our energy use'. Does this rich Tory git really think this hasn't already occurred to us?

Nowmum43 · 26/08/2022 11:54

This is what I think (hope) they are making it really shit and then the new PM will be like a hero by saving us all and everyone will love the Tories once again (or so they think be we aren't all fucking stupid!)

At this point I'd consider reducing him!!!!!

Well some people still think the cap is an all you can eat buffet, and the Guardian too apparently, so it's worth point out.

NC4TPost · 26/08/2022 11:56

I don't know whether to contact BG about my latest electricity bill because I am sure it's being miscalculated. I seriously don't understand it (other than costs going up).

I NEVER have the heating on - not because I can't afford it (well, I can't now, either way) but because I live in a flat and I'm a naturally hot person, even in Winter. Since moving in just under a year ago, I've had the heating on TWICE - once: to test that it was working for about 30 seconds and the second occasion: for about 30 minutes when I had covid and was absolutely shivering cold. I am not exaggerating, these are the only two instances I have ever put the heating on.

I live by myself, so it's not like there are multiple devices using up electric all at the same time (apart from things like fridge, etc). I don't have a dishwasher or tumbledryer, just a washing machine that I use only when necessary (again, single person by myself so it's not constantly on) and always wash on an eco wash.

My quarterly bill has gone from £164.33 to £615.67. The average usage according to my bill today is 4262.37KWH at a standing charge of £51.520p per day. Comparing averages online, that's apparently the same cost for a detached or semi detached house with a full family. Mine is a one bedroomed flat I live in by myself.

In comparison, my gas has only risen £55.38 to £67.53 quarterly so I can't understand why the electric bill is so astronomically high. I previously asked them to come out and check it's working properly when the bill seemed higher than usual in the past but there was an outcall charge which I couldn't afford at the time so I left it.

Does that sound normal to anybody else? Would you call someone out to check it by those figures? Please, if anybody reads this, please reply.

(Please be kind if this is a stupid thing to ask, this is my first experience with this. I've only ever lived in hostels and supported accommodation before and I've never had to deal with bills like this and I don't know whether it's right or not.)
