I did something stupid and looked on the DM website that’s reporting that ML is predicting that it’s going to go up to £10,000 per annum.

ML?

I am in the group that will be getting those payments and it is a drop in the ocean. Nowhere near enough. They’ve been screwing over disabled people and low income people for years.

You nailed it there, @Afterfire .

I just don't understand. France had capped it. Why can't we? I just can't get my head round it.

I read somewhere that France get over 70% of its energy from its own nuclear resources so aren't as dependant as us on wholesale gas/oil prices - lucky them!

Maccapacca88 · 26/08/2022 11:16

I already pay £200 a month, likely to go up to £350 (the same as my very low mortgage). With childcare on top as well as day to day living costs I have no idea how I’ll make ends meet and I get tax credits. I live very frugally, buy second hand whenever possible and stretch everything until empty/falling apart.

I’m a single mum, in a professional career earning (a bit) over UK average. God knows how people on minimum wage will cope, especially those paying extortionate rents and with no access to benefits.

It comes to something when working people have to rely on benefits just to survive.

NellieJean · 26/08/2022 11:16

Allegedly there is worse to come next year. I suspect the government is planning to help but by how much nobody knows.
Liz Truss is keeping quiet about her plans so that she can sweep into Downing Street and make a big announcement (here’s hoping).. Meanwhile million of people are worried to death. If we had a functioning government they could have announced the plan weeks ago. Todays figure is almost in line with the forecasts so the “we must wait for the announcement” line is just that a line to kick the can down the road.

AYearOfCushions · 26/08/2022 11:18

I've just calculated mine based on last year minus the credit I have and government help.
Will need to find an extra £140 a month, I don't know where from.

Hopefully being more frugal with energy will bring it down somewhat but it's going to be a long and boring winter with no end in sight.

TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination · 26/08/2022 11:18

RudsyFarmer · 26/08/2022 08:46

Im not denying there will be some that are but pretty much everyone I know is just continuing as they always did. We’ve had decades of expectation that we can wander around the house in shorts and T-shirt over winter with all the lights on, TV blaring in every room.

What I’m hoping will be announced in the government measures (and they will offer some concessions) is community warm areas that will allow a communal warm space for people to gather in the day. What we absolutely don’t want is the elderly sitting at home heating one room and dying in the night. I’m old enough to remember those news stories every winter and that’s why the winter support payment was brought in.

@RudsyFarmer Jesus wept. Brilliant idea. NOT!!

let's drag the elderly out of their homes, mid winter, encounter fall risks, freezing weather, to sit them in a 'communal warm space' probably charge them fir fiid & drinks, then have them go home (in all weathers) to a freezing cold, dark house'

you really can't see why that's a SHIT idea??

doingitalllagain · 26/08/2022 11:18

Is there any idea on when it might have to begin to come back down? We’re fixed for one more year, thankfully but not sure when we need to panic. It has to go down eventually right? Like how fuel is starting to? I’m not good with this stuff.

So sorry for anyone having to deal with the immediate repercussions.

LakieLady · 26/08/2022 11:20

CleopatrasBeautifulNose · 26/08/2022 09:40

The trouble with pay as you go meters is that even when you're not paying, the standing charge still adds up every day. So when you finally get the money to top up your meter it can all be swallowed by the daily standing charge that's been adding up every day. It's unfair that even if you don't use any energy at all you are still racking up a debt. If I couldn't afford to run my car I could sorn it and go without, that's not possible with energy which is crazy to me.

I resent the standing charge too. I'm still on a price fix from last summer, but it's still 50p a day even if I lock the house up and go away for 3 months.

FourTeaFallOut · 26/08/2022 11:20

"you really can't see why that's a SHIT idea??"

A warm heated room with the windows closed to pack in the elderly to keep them war ..like a covid party for the most vulnerable?

Hugasauras · 26/08/2022 11:12

I've just turned our oven off at the wall after getting an air fryer. It's brilliant. We got an 8L one with two drawers and that's ample for a family of 4 IMO. It took me 10 mins to bake some cupcakes the other day - in my oven that would have been 10 mins to preheat and then 20 mins to bake.

Which one did you get? If it can bake as well, that’s v interesting.

DIanaRiggFan · 26/08/2022 11:22

Could we not all just club together and pay an assassin to take Putin out?

Arenanewbie · 26/08/2022 11:24

@Alexandra2001
We voted for this, time and time again.
I don’t remember doing this personally but I accept the general idea, we all to blame in a way for doing nothing or not enough.

If France can nationalise Nuclear power production, we could do the same for our resources.
I completely agree. At least the profits will be used for everybody’s good not just a handful of shareholders.

AtomicBlondeRose · 26/08/2022 11:24

@StickywithSuncream All air fryers can bake - they’re essentially small convection ovens. The “air fryer” name is very misleading.

NoodleDoodleDo · 26/08/2022 11:25

SmallThingsEverywhere · 26/08/2022 08:59

Nope? Just going to increase again next year😣Based on gas prices up to yesterday's market close, experts at independent energy consultancy Auxilione now think the cap will rise by another 52 per cent to £5,405 in January 2023, then by a further 34 per cent to £7,263 in April - before falling slightly, by 11 per cent to £6,485 in July and by another 7 per cent to £6,006 in October.

Fuck! That's beyond scary.

StickywithSuncream · 26/08/2022 11:21

I think one problem with air fryers and baking is fitting the tins in, although I think the one we have is quite small.

But I've just googled and it seems that you can now get baking tins designed to be used in air fryers, complete with a handle so you can lift it in and out, so probably something to look at.

CaptainBarbosa · 26/08/2022 11:27

I'm on pre payment, LA house and utility provider refused to change meter. I've just looked at mine for my national area 😱 (we basically get charged the max, with no chance to fix)

Gas
Unit rate: 15.07p per kWh
Standing charge: 37.51p per day

Electric

Unit rate: 50.86p per kWh
Standing charge: 54.21p per day

Fuck.....

TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination · 26/08/2022 11:27

LittleLlama · 26/08/2022 08:51

From October I am going to be in “Fuel poverty” - a person is living in fuel poverty if, to heat their home to a satisfactory standard, they need to spend more than 10 per cent of their household income on fuel. (Obviously satisfactory standard is subjective).

Fortunately it will only be until April when we receive a £6k real term increase in our income and we have savings we will have to live on until then. But gosh it is scary!

@LittleLlama

Jesus. How unaware can one person be?

some people here are living on not much more than £6000, you getting that as an increase in April and having savings you can use in the meantime, might be frustrating, but it's not fucking scary!!

dottypencilcase · 26/08/2022 11:29

Why aren't we all protesting on the streets for this? The energy companies are all having a laugh at our expense.

I did laugh when I read about a TikTok talking about the 'revolutionary hack' of using your own oven as an air fryer using a 'special secret button' aka the fan oven setting Grin

So someone talking about something that we we've all been doing for decades as if they're the only person who knows this and at the same time completely missing the main advantage of an air fryer in that it achieves the same results as a fan oven, but quicker and with less energy.

Hugasauras · 26/08/2022 11:30

@StickywithSuncream

This one, which is apparently out of stock now on Amazon but maybe around elsewhere. Photo for scale! I can do 16 cupcakes in one batch. Not tried a big cake but it would make loaf cakes well I imagine.

I'm a carer for my two disabled DC, we have medical equipment that has to stay on all night, heating is needed pretty much all day in winter, a light on all night, and so on. We're going to have to cut back on everything to be able to afford the gas and electricity.

To make it even better, my meter is broken and the power company won't fix it as their engineers apparently aren't doing home visits right now. This has been the case for two years so I'll probably get whacked with a mass of charges when they do eventually fix it.

Sorry you're in such a tough place, @FarmerRefuted .

I'm sure I read somewhere that if an energy co hasn't been billing you, they can only charge you for the past 12 months, and aren't allowed to go back any further than that.

Small comfort, I know.

UnshakenNeedsStirring · 26/08/2022 11:33

I will not be able to afford this :(
