From £1971 to £3549. 80% rise. I have no words.

New figures:

Electricity

Daily standing charge: £0.46

Exactly this, sadly the net zero needs to be shelved for a while, until this stabilises.

Pointless exercise anyhow, with China chucking out co2 by the tonne. Like chucking a deck chair off the titantic.

Absolutely

Hydrangeatea · 26/08/2022 11:02

Thank you! Yes I had worked that out myself and thought jeez that can't be right, however the online calculator on money saving expert says the same so guess it must be right 😫

'I’ve just bought an air fryer. In the 2 weeks I’ve had it I’ve only used my oven once, yesterday, whereas I usually use it once a day.'

We have an airfryer and yes it cuts electricity costs ime. No warming the oven up and everything cooks quicker so it is saving on a daily basis.

I was thinking of getting an air fryer for MIL for Christmas.

Her house is all electric, so damn expensive to run. She cooks things like prepared fish in breadcrumbs or a chicken breast (all her shopping comes from Iceland!), occasionally makes a cottage pie if she has visitors, bakes jacket potatoes, might heat up a pie. She heats the whole oven just to cook one thing for herself most of the time.

I thought it could save her money, but I'm not sure she'd adapt to it. She's 84, but fine mentally (and remarkably fit physically, too). She has some funny ideas though, is very resistant to the idea of a microwave, but then I'm not a fan of microwaved food either.

Her house is all-electric by choice. When they moved in (1961) she and FIL were convinced gas wasn't safe, so had it disconnected. When the council wanted to pay to have it connected and install gas CH, they refused!

I'm going to need a post about cooking using low energy. I use my oven quite a lot.
No idea how we are going to afford this. I'm on carers allowance looking after my disabled son. My husband runs his own business but it's quite new and not really making much.

@ofwarren ((Hug)) I know you guys struggled through covid & had only just started to find your feet again.

there are a LOT of threads on saving energy/where the hidden costs are/cooking method comparisons.

there's a new cost of living section, have a look through the threads or start one specifically about cooking, I'm sure it'll attract a lot of posts.

one of the threads the other day was comparing air fryers with ovens for example.

I'm still undecided about getting one, as I really don't want the clutter on the work surface, my oven is old and gets as hot out as in, the bonus is that I don't need the heating on when I use it! It might just work out as well to use it?!

The Russians are burning off 8.4 million pounds worth of spare gas every day, according to the BBC. Disgusting. I hope our leaders are never again stupid enough to put us in this situation, of being held to ransom.

I'm a newly widowed single woman living in a very large, very old stone house with no room for improvements in insulation. I've no income other than my widows pension and am already paying £400pm. I'm looking at over £700pm just for my fuel! Yet last month (summer obvs) my total gas and electricity costs were less than £100; but in winter the heating is astronomical. I feel sick...

"It's only relatively recently in history that people have expected to be able to sit downstairs comfortably in just pyjamas on a winters evening." Yeah it's known as "progress". Instead we're sliding backwards, exactly as the Tories want.

@RaRaRaspoutine is it progress when we're using far too much of the planets resources to generate it??

I’m on a fix where elec is 16p kWh. Nice for now but there’ll be a massive jump when that ends on Jan.

Oblomov22 · 26/08/2022 11:08

I just don't understand. France had capped it. Why can't we? I just can't get my head round it.

Pittapatcat · 26/08/2022 10:56

Would you go with a fix that works out as 8% higher than the price cap? Its gas standing charge 27.22 and unit rate 15.19 and elec standing charge 48.15 and unit rate 60.35. it's a year fix. So will cost more until January but then may be cheaper than later price cap rises

Are there hefty exit fees? I've gone on a similar fix but have £0 to pay if I want to exit, so I went for it.

Sorry you think I am being unhelpful but every thread on this forum about energy is littered with people who have no understanding of their usage, what a unit cost is, what a DD is, that the price cap doesn't mean that it's the maximum they will pay (except on a unit cost basis), who think that 'fixing' your DD means your will not have to pay more than that figure. This is partly down to poor reporting but also down to people not paying any attention to how their bill is constructed.

If people did the basic maths required to work out their bill rather than expect someone else to do it for them, people would have a much better idea of what they are paying for and what the changes mean. Maybe you are not one of these people but given that you seem not to have taken even the most basic steps to discover the information yourself, I suspect you might be. Apologies if I am wrong.

You have absolutely NO IDEA what I have and haven't done. Being obtuse is simply you being a smart arse twat. No other explanation for it.

I HAD and DID work out the useage on my calculator, couldn't quite believe what I was seeing so asked if there was a calculator for me to check.

I didn't need to explain any of that to you. All you needed to do was scroll on by, not be a twat trying to show me up.

All that said, my reasons for wanting to see an online calculator has absolutely NOTHING to do with you.

AprilRae91 · 26/08/2022 11:09

How am I meant to afford that on maternity allowance?

LakieLady · 26/08/2022 11:09

Aha, they've finally found a minister prepared to stick his head above the parapet.

Zahawi's on BBC news channel, telling us they're going to see what they can do.

I can scarcely contain my excitement, it's a toss up between very little and fuck all.

Blossomtoes · 26/08/2022 10:40

If you were 80 and didn't pay your electric bill do you really think electricity companies will allow you to rack up debt for another 5 or 10 years?

I do actually. And I think the media will be stuffed with stories about people in exactly that situation this winter.

I can't see that happening. See below for the protocol all electicity companies follow for customers who fail to pay 28 days after a final demand bill.

I'm lucky that I got a fix with bg last year until March 24. I have told my extended family that they can use my tumble dryer, oven and heating during the day if needs be. If I can cook their meals they will only need to warm them up.

I was annoyed with myself for not fixing as early as I could have, but I did fix a while ago (thank god) until Dec23, that was all I was offered I think, but the other day when bemoaning my stupidity at not fixing sooner I noticed that deal was only until Oct22, so I thanked my stupidity!!

it's very kind of you to let the others use your electricity. I guess depending on your financial situation, just be careful it doesn't cripple you!

That's a great idea. They're brilliant for 1/2 person households especially. I tried to convince DM to get one, the other good thing was it would save her from bending down to use her free standing oven, but she said she didn't want another appliance out on the countertop.

But for a lot of people, the advantage is so much, that it would probably be worth trying to rearrange the kitchen so there is space for the air fryer to be out permanently. Or even try and find somewhere else for it to live, like a dining or utility room.

Anyone with a small household and kitchen who is doing refurbishment work may do well do make sure it includes a place for an air fryer to be out permanently, and could possibly not even bother with a full sized oven.

Universal credit and carers isn't going to cover that.

Cheesecakeandwineinasuitcase · 26/08/2022 11:11

I did something stupid and looked on the DM website that’s reporting that ML is predicting that it’s going to go up to £10,000 per annum. I feel sick now. There’s no way I can afford that along with increased mortgage rates when my fixed rate ends. I would lose everything.

Hugasauras · 26/08/2022 11:12

I've just turned our oven off at the wall after getting an air fryer. It's brilliant. We got an 8L one with two drawers and that's ample for a family of 4 IMO. It took me 10 mins to bake some cupcakes the other day - in my oven that would have been 10 mins to preheat and then 20 mins to bake.
