If you were asked to participate in an ID parade would you?

In the afternoon today, when on a break from work I was out in the town centre and I was approached by two officers which took me a bit by surprise, who then told me or I fit the description of a woman who committed an incident recently in the town centre.
I was then asked if I would have any objections in taking part in an identity parade tomorrow.
Of course I have nothing to hide so I agreed to it though naturally, as have not been in that position before I do not know what to expect

Of course as a crime was committed and I would like to do my bit if I need to help

I probably wouldn’t but good for you.

cherylturner1980 · 25/08/2022 22:22

My initial thoughts was I really dont want to , as not knowing what to expect

I did once as a student just to see what happens.
Quite an interesting afternoon but I remember being emotionally drained by it.

aletterfromseneca · 25/08/2022 22:26

I participated in one before. Pretty simple affair. Generally they are trying to make sure the victim can correctly identify the suspect. When I did it the line up was all people who you might describe similarly but didn’t actually look alike — if that makes sense? I was young, remember getting £20

Twizbe · 25/08/2022 22:26

When I was at 6th form we got requests all the time to take part in identity parades. Sadly there weren't many crimes committed by 6ft white women in the city so I never got to take part.

I seem to remember you could be paid for them. One of the lads in my form did it a lot.

Valhalla17 · 25/08/2022 22:26

But what happens if the person id's you? That would be my fear....that I'd be innocent but I'd be arrested and have to be in solitary for 30yrs 😕

I watch a lot of movies....

whereamu · 25/08/2022 22:28

Was it you Shock!
Do you have an alibi?

cherylturner1980 · 25/08/2022 22:29

I think the thought would be a bit draining too yes

aletterfromseneca · 25/08/2022 22:30

@Valhalla17 they don’t do the parade till they basically already know who did it. It’s just a last thing to show “oh and they got picked out the line up”. If they picked out the wrong person they’d not charge with anything

cherylturner1980 · 25/08/2022 22:31

Valhalla17 this was my thoughts too, being wrongly picked out etc

Maybe I am jumping too conclusions of course

Yes I would do it. Why wouldn't you help?

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 25/08/2022 22:32

Ohh yes I would- would be one for the bucket list

cherylturner1980 · 25/08/2022 22:34

Pixiedust1234 of course wanna help yes

carefullycourageous · 25/08/2022 22:36

I wouldn't want to do this, personally.

whenindoubtgotothelibrary · 25/08/2022 22:37

I have one of those faces where people always think they know me - at least twice a year I get mistaken for someone else or asked by strangers if I have a sister because I look just like someone they know. So I'd be a bit nervous about mistaken identity too, unless the police assured me that wouldn't happen!

TFMinx · 25/08/2022 22:39

A friend of mine was asked to take part as a 17 year old; she ended up joining the police.

anotherpotoftea · 25/08/2022 22:40

I’d do it if I was paid.

cherylturner1980 · 25/08/2022 22:40

whenindoubtgotothelibrary I have a face like this too, I must have

Few times in the past, people have came up and spoken to me who claim to know me, and turns out they didnt, obviously confusing me with someone else, maybe more common than people think

Wazzzzzuuuuuuup · 25/08/2022 22:41

My grandad did it once and we never knew about it until we found the documentation in his belongings! He was quite a distinctive looking man but very short, for a male. So I guess the criteria was probably 'short, bald man'

Dontstoprunning · 25/08/2022 22:43

Is it an actual parade? I vaguely remember on a TV show they showed the victim various photos of people for them to pick from.
How will you do this and do you get paid?

lljkk · 25/08/2022 22:45

Totally nosy, would love to do this.
Not least because I'm curious who else looks like me.
Can't convict you based on only evidence = being picked out of parade.

cherylturner1980 · 25/08/2022 22:46

Dontstoprunning Not sure exactly, as has not been properly explained to me though potential of VIPER , which after googling is more a visual thing

If it was a straight choice of standing in a line up with other females, or a visual thing with photos like mugshots I would probably have to go with the second option

OP posts:
ErrolTheDragon · 25/08/2022 22:46

Sure, why not? The police know you're not a suspect so it doesn't matter from that POV if the witness picks you. Actually, I assume nowadays they do it behind a one way mirror or by video so you wouldn't even know.

FinallyHere · 25/08/2022 22:49

As a student, this was one of the most lucrative jobs going, v v popular.

I got to do it twice, over three years. Was picked out as the perp, both times.

Must just have that kind of face.

The episode might be more than one) of 'Ed Reardon's Week' that covers ID parades, nails it brilliantly.

Ponderingwindow · 25/08/2022 22:52

It seems a bit like serving jury duty. A bit of a hassle, but useful for the civic order.

I wouldn’t actually agree because of a medical condition that makes just leaving my house difficult, but in better days, sure, if I wasn’t terribly busy that day.
