That at the age of 35, I have just passed my maths GCSE!!

In the last year while doing the course, I’ve worked full time, with two children, and been in the most awful abusive relationship that I left 3 weeks before my exams started.

I was never allowed to stay for the full evening class, my ex would drive by the college repeatedly to check I was there, and put me through all sorts of horrible shit.

I needed this to be able to go on to do an access to social work course, and I did it!!

My children don’t really understand so thought I’d share with you lot instead!

You Wonder Woman, you!

It is never too late to learn. I cannot boast of GCE/GCSE's or whatever they are called nowadays, but in my 50's I did an evening class in Maths - below GCE but boy did I need it. Felt bloody good that I do know fractures/Division etc etc. My teacher was lovely but firm when she needed to be - when I reckoned I could not do something, she left me to figure it out and eventually I realised I could!

So don't feel as daft now as I did but mind you I haven't tried to do any sums lately but still have the books. I also managed to do Sage as well - the first one.

That’s brilliant well done you!

I felt like I knew nothing when I first started and very nearly left, now I know I will at least be able to help my children with their homework!

Never could do Sage though…!

Congratulations OP. Good luck with your access to social work course! If it ever feels hard and overwhelming, remember that you felt like that about the Maths GCSE and yet YOU PASSED IT!

wherearebeefandonioncrisps · 25/08/2022 13:24

That's wonderful news OP!
Can you hear the sound of doors opening for you now?

I went back to study but minus the abuse you’ve put up with.
started with maths GCSE then access, then uni. You will love it! Stay focused, stay organised. Protect your study time. There are big pay off waiting for you at the end of this.

I’m just popping back to this thread to update you all.

The abusive ex pretty much stalked me for a year after I wrote this thread

Two immediate family members were diagnosed with cancer; one is now all clear but sadly the other is terminal and likely to be sooner rather than later.

BUT I have completed the access course, and I have today been offered (and accepted!) a place at my first choice Uni to start in September.

I can’t quite believe that I’ve survived the last few years, or that I’m about to start a degree. I promised myself that no matter what I would keep going, and I’m feeling proud of myself tonight. I don’t know what the future holds, but right now as I sit in peace and quiet I am very happy.

Cheers everyone 🥂

Pixiesgirl · 23/02/2024 22:27

Congratulations! It's weird I have a maths a level but sadly no certificate and couldn't be arsed getting a replacement, so as part of an access course I did ages ago I had to do level 2 maths. I had literally forgotten 90% and they used new and weird methods lol. It's really not easy, well done!
