What food are you most looking forward to eating in Autumn?

Just that really! Looking to salivate over Autumnal deliciousness (or anything in general you are looking forward to, now Autumn is not far from peeking it’s head out!)

❌ autumn bashers not allowed 😁 and yes I know energy prices are the shit bit.

You make it sound as if we’re being a bit pretentious, @AclowncalledAlice - but I don’t think it is that unusual,to eat differently in the cooler weather than in the hot weather?

During the summer we eat more light meals, like salads, cause we don’t want heavier, hot comfort food, and we don’t want to spend ages slaving over a hot stove, but when the weather gets colder, we want more hot meals/comfort food.

Coastalcreeksider · 21/08/2022 17:43

Stews, lots of stews, at least twice a week.

A580Hojas · 21/08/2022 17:46

Mashed potato. Jacket potato. Beef stew. Chicken casserole. Pies. Soups. Chilli con carne. Shepherd's pie. All the lovely savoury dishes I haven't had for months.

WishDragon · 21/08/2022 17:46

I don’t think I eat any differently. We don’t tend to cook puddings anyway and the kids won’t touch salad. Also hate anything pumpkin spiced! I use the slow cooker all the time for convenience.

Inextremis · 21/08/2022 17:48

@AclowncalledAlice It's so much cheaper to eat seasonally - and the produce is much tastier. There's a massive difference between British strawberries in June, and imported Israeli ones in November - both in price and flavour. That's just one example. I grow a few veg at home - they're ready when they're ready - so right now courgettes are 'free', so of course we're eating them!

Wouldloveanother · 21/08/2022 17:51

Ooooh my kind of thread.

Bangers with whole grain mash, gravy and greens.

Beef stew.

Baked ratatouille with dumplings and cheese.

Hot chocolate fudge pudding with ice cream.

Hot chocolate by the gallon!

Not at all. I apologise for any offence I may have caused.

HighlandCowbag · 21/08/2022 17:56

Ooof all of the lovely foods mentioned 😋.

I love autumn anyway. But being able to cook properly instead of fannying about with salads and prawns and BBQs makes me really enjoy cooking again.

We had a few friends potentially coming to watch the boxing last night who had to cancel (was never a guaranteed thing) so I did a beef joint in the slow cooker with onions and carrots to have on sandwiches. So there was loads of beef/gravy left. Tonight we are having that with mashed potatoes, roast potatoes, Yorkshire puddings and braised red cabbage.

It smells like autumn and I can't bloody wait for it. Am much more likely to have some crappy takeaway on a Sunday night in summer as no one really fancies another bloody salad but also I cba to cook either unless it's something comforting.

Crikeyblimey · 21/08/2022 18:03

I can’t smell autumn in the air yet but I did make a roast beef dinner tonight cos it’s been so long and I was missing it. Bloody lovely it was too (although the parsnips don’t taste of much till after the frost has got to them).
I adore autumn and am looking forward to more roasts, beef stew with jacket spuds, anything apple or plum (pie, crumble, baked).
I love all the seasons when they turn up when they should and behave as they should. But with food, I’m often ready for the next season just before the previous one ends.

Just explaining how the earlier comment arose Confused

Personally, couldn't care less what topic it's in.

Ooh, no.
Not you.
The arse that got it moved.

Sorry Brew

Oh, sorry, my mistake. I thought it was a tad harsh! Grin

A580Hojas · 21/08/2022 19:44

Oh yes colcannon. And bubble & squeak. Brussels sprouts! Savoy cabbage, English apples and pears.

BuwchGochGota · 21/08/2022 19:51

I bought a massive squash at the farmers market on Saturday and am going to roast it with sausages and red onions tomorrow night. This feels like the first autumnal meal this year.

Every year my neighbours put a bucket outside their gate with their surplus apples in, for anyone to take. The bucket was outside today for the first time this year. Got me thinking about crumble...

wibblywobblytummytumtum · 21/08/2022 19:52

Place marking for ideas!!

OceanbreezeSun · 21/08/2022 19:54

A good slow cooked beef stew or casserole.

Ahhbiscuits · 22/08/2022 01:39

I’m thinking there’s potentially one more week of lighter meals (hot weather over Bank Hol depending) then can start going for autumn delights. Keen for a butternut squash curry in the slow cooker now with fluffy naans.

Can Baileys be put into hot coffee does anyone know? I never know if it would curdle 😬

My dh's lamb stew and scotch broth. He was mentioning he has 2 leg of lambs in the freezer yesterday, and now I have been thinking of scotch broth all day.

Forgottenmypasswordagain · 22/08/2022 01:45

Yes Baileys can go in hot coffee.

RhubarbMoon · 22/08/2022 02:42

I don't think there's anything I have in Autumn that I don't have any other time of the year. But then, I don't stop using the cooker as much as other people in the summer and still will eat hot meals unless it's an extreme heatwave.

gumball37 · 22/08/2022 03:30

Apple cider

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 22/08/2022 03:45

Meat and potato pie.

Scabbyknackers · 22/08/2022 04:47

Parkin, soups, kaddoo (pumpkin) borani, lentil shepherd's pie, hotpot, a full veggie roast for my new bf- it's been too hot to dazzle him with my Yorkshire pudding skills!

garlicandsapphires · 22/08/2022 07:50

Love Autumn cooking and seasonal food generally. Excited for whatever comes in my veg box.

TopGolfer · 22/08/2022 07:58

Apple crumble made with apples from my own orchard (one apple tree), it’s our start of Autumn tradition. I’m going to add some blueberries this year.
