If you were going to University this year, what course would you study?

Just reading the A'Levels/University threads on Facebook - out of interest for DC and I've just spotted my ideal degree - Human evolution and behaviour.

This is what I wanted to do nearly 40 years ago when I went but it didn't exist then so I did Psychology.

So, what would be your idea subject to study now? And if you went to Uni, how different is it to the course you actually studied?

My lottery winners dream would be to give up work, go back to uni and become an eternal student.

I already have the following degrees lined up...

Undergraduate:

  • Philosophy
  • Sociology
  • Liberal Arts

Postgraduate:

  • Jewish studies
  • Quaker studies
  • an ethics course (global, contemporary or practical)

Great list!
That would be my dream as well (stares longingly at Euromillions ticket), but I would want to go to the lectures and learn, without having to take exams or write a million essays. Not sure how that would work, maybe I could buy the University or something😁

Excellent question!

Did English Lit originally and hated it. Had very limited experience and narrow horizons at 18. Had no real idea what interested me.

So much interests me now:

Neuroscience.
Psychology
Social Policy
Politics
Entrepreneurship
Conservation

I failed my nursing degree. 25 years later I'd choose art history.

Sorry to be annoying but this did exist 40 years ago - it is biological (or physical) anthropology. An amazing course that most people have never heard off.

I’m very happy with what I did but if had to do something different then civil and environmental engineering, love seeing buildings and structures come together.

I graduated in Law with Accounting 12 years ago.
I realised I wasn’t cut out to be a lawyer at university, so I would either skip university completely and go the non-grad route to become a chartered accountant, or I would do something like Computer Science or Software Development.

It’s so hard to pick a career at 17 when you’ve no experience of anything though. I wish it was cheaper to retrain. I never got full benefit from my degree but could never afford to do anything else.

Bobbybobbins · 19/08/2022 20:49

I did English and American literature.

I'd do:
Modern history and politics
International relations
Speech and Language therapy

SenecaFallsRedux · 19/08/2022 20:52

I would do the same thing I did the first time around: history.

SantiagoSky · 19/08/2022 20:56

I would do electrical engineering

SingingSands · 19/08/2022 21:02

I'd still choose my original course, but actually do some proper work and not drop out after second year Blush

WontLetThoseRobotsDefeatMe · 19/08/2022 21:03

Paramedic science.

I did a history degree and work in charity finance...I'd love to be more practical.

42isthemeaning · 19/08/2022 21:04

Filmmaking or Neuroscience

I actually did a joint languages degree and became a teacher. My true dream was to write screenplays for film and tv...

norwichmummy123 · 19/08/2022 21:06

Criminology

toffeechai · 19/08/2022 21:07

Occupational therapy

Interesting how many would choose history! That's what I did and I'd probably do it again now. I noticed at least one other poster say the same above - clearly the one to choose!

Or for a change, I'd quite fancy midwifery!

LER83 · 19/08/2022 21:20

Public Health. There's actually places still left for this course at my local uni through clearing, really tempted to apply but not sure if I'd cope! I studied Ancient History and Classical World Culture at uni when I was younger, couldn't be anymore different!

BryceQuinlanTheFirst · 19/08/2022 21:20

I did history ten years ago and I'd do it again. I loved it

ell32 · 19/08/2022 21:21

Nursing!

Actually planning to go when DS is 2.

Was the degree I did when I went but I didn't stay past the first semester!

shangelawasrobbed · 19/08/2022 21:29

I did theology and religious studies but if I had my time again then I'd choose philosophy.

Sapphirensteel · 19/08/2022 21:35

Law. Or American History.
Did History and Education and the history part was really boring.

This is my lottery winners dream too!
I'd want to do Sociology, MFL, jewellery design, pattern design, embroidery and illustration for starters

clopper · 19/08/2022 21:41

Nursing

ILIWYS · 19/08/2022 21:42

I did English Lit but now I think I'd do either Sociology or Linguistics.

Knittingnanny2 · 19/08/2022 21:47

I did a bog standard primary age teaching certificate with music main in the 70’s but would love to actually wear the hat and gown!
So for my own interest I would like to do Social History. But the universities that offer it are no where near me and I don’t think at 65 I could go back to halls of residence….
Doing it through open university has no appeal.
A popular course in the 70’s was Social Biology which always sounded interesting.

Knittingnanny2 · 19/08/2022 21:49

Or tailoring and dressmaking.
Then I could apply to go on the great British sewing bee
