If you were going to University this year, what course would you study?

Just reading the A'Levels/University threads on Facebook - out of interest for DC and I've just spotted my ideal degree - Human evolution and behaviour.

This is what I wanted to do nearly 40 years ago when I went but it didn't exist then so I did Psychology.

So, what would be your idea subject to study now? And if you went to Uni, how different is it to the course you actually studied?

I did a maths degree.
I should have done Computer Science.

If I were doing something now for interest, maybe Archaeology.

Helenloveslee4eva · 19/08/2022 19:50

Liberal arts.
at a uni that let me line up my own modules.

Youngest did liberal arts at leeds. I went with her for a taster day. It was amazing. BUT for 18yr olds please choose a liberal arts school
like leeds with a strong liberal arts learning module that brings the course group together - it’s easy to feel like a “ stateless person “ without a home department or group as you pick from different faculties

I enjoy what I do so would possibly do Biomed again, I wanted to do medicine but knowing how bad the work life balance has become I wouldn't even apply now.

Might think about pharmacy then doing aesthetics. If we lived down south I might have done something more pharmacology related.

LondonWolf · 19/08/2022 19:52

Radiography or Pharmacy.

Whichwhatnow · 19/08/2022 19:52

Anthropology or history. I'm quite happy with my actual degree though (social policy)

AudTheDeepMinded · 19/08/2022 19:56

I am retraining and am starting back at Uni next month to do Medical Imaging (Diagnostic Radiography). Am simultaneously bricking it and fizzing with excitement.

hoglethotel · 19/08/2022 19:57

My lottery winners dream would be to give up work, go back to uni and become an eternal student.

I already have the following degrees lined up...

Undergraduate:

  • Philosophy
  • Sociology
  • Liberal Arts

Postgraduate:

  • Jewish studies
  • Quaker studies
  • an ethics course (global, contemporary or practical)

Graphic Design, Computer Science or UX Design, interesting and the jobs are in demand.

evilharpy · 19/08/2022 20:07

Maths or Spanish. Or maths with Spanish.

Purely for interest if I had money to burn, maybe interior design.

DramaAlpaca · 19/08/2022 20:14

I did English 40 (!) years ago.

If I went back now it would be just for fun and I'd do History of Art.

frenchie4002 · 19/08/2022 20:16

I’d also be a forever student if I had the funds. Would love to study anything and everything. Currently have an English Lit degree and also on my list are
law
psychology
cyber security
art history

Cervinia · 19/08/2022 20:17

Adult Nursing.

mum wanted me to train to be a nurse back in 1984 and I wouldn’t on principle as I was rebellious. I do kind of regret it.

Andthenshetripped · 19/08/2022 20:20

Theology/religious studies

mememe30 · 19/08/2022 20:20

Noshowlomo · 19/08/2022 19:23

Palaeontology. I was so close to doing it as well 😩

That's what my son is off to do in September. So excited for him

bigbluebus · 19/08/2022 20:21

Sociology or Occupational therapy.

Trenisenne · 19/08/2022 20:21

Geology or cartography or geography. I actually studied economics.

DinosaursEatMan · 19/08/2022 20:26

English

Brontosaurus · 19/08/2022 20:27

I should have done palaeontology or botany.

Instead I did psychology.

hedwigismyowl · 19/08/2022 20:33

Would like to do history & archaeology for interest now!!!

Back then I did diagnostic radiography, had decent career and generally enjoy it.

Been enrolled to do a masters now for my job but I'm hankering to do something else entirely!!!

PlanetNormal · 19/08/2022 20:33

My degree was in politics & economics, which was the only subject I was ever sufficiently interested in or good at to study at a decent university. If I was choosing another degree to complement my own it would probably be contemporary history or, if just for interest, an an initio language course which includes a year somewhere interesting. Italian? Japanese?

Simonjt · 19/08/2022 20:33

I think I would study pure maths and specialise later, I would have definitely picked a different university, with hindsight I should have moved after first year. If it wasn’t maths I would have probably studied interpol, specifically post/colonialism

chorusline79 · 19/08/2022 20:34

Would love to do public health but can't justify cost.
