How many pairs of shoes does your 10 year old (girl) have?

ShoesShoesGloriousShoes · 16/08/2022 21:25

I've specified girl because I'm assuming they'll have more than a boy. That is how our family seems to have ended up!
DS(12) has hiking boots, sandals and waterproof trail running shoes, crocs for school and for home.

DD10 has
wellies - sparkly, rarely worn as there hasn't been enough rain
hiking boots
sandals - everyday wear at the moment, not the most fashionable but good for skateboarding and water sports.
waterproof trainers - everyday wear when not wearing sandals, again not fashionable but waterproof as we walk a lot, wait at bus stops and they have to be outside every break unless its very windy.
smart boots
crocs for home
fake Birkenstock for school.
She used to have running shoes but has now stopped that club so I haven't replaced.

Normally she wears crocs at school, but this year has asked for fake Birkenstock type as all the other children have them. I have obliged.

She is now asking for "normal trainers". I don't know if I should get her some, she has serviceable trainers, but .... see picture. I don't want to fall into the "buy her everything she asks for just because the others have it" trap. But I'm aware this stuff is becoming more important at this age and she does have to deal with some stick for having a sibling with SN in the same school. There is no uniform, so these are the shoes she wears to school.

Does she have too many shoes? Should I buy her fashion trainers rather than waterproof ones? Or should she get both?

School trainers
Playing out trainers
Sandals
Sliders (4quid from asda. Worn constantly. Bane of my life)
Wellies

And I thought that was verging on a lot!

Ds
School trainers
Non school trainers
Football boots worn about 6 times for school
Sliders
Hiking boots
Wellies, I think

Earlymenopausesucks · 16/08/2022 23:11

DD10 wouldn’t wear the trainers pictured and I think fashion starts to matter at this age. That said I know DD has too many shoes:

black Nike gym trainers (sport and fashion)
Leopard Vans slip on’s
white Birkenstocks
Purple wellies
Pink jelly shoes
Converse x2 black and white
Black Chelsea boots
silver sequin pumps
gold pumps
pale blue canvas plimsolls
school shoes
school trainers (also Nike)

bluesky45 · 16/08/2022 23:12

Blimey this is interesting. I have 2 much younger boys. I didn't think they had that many shoes but after reading this, maybe they do!
They both have:
A pair of sporty trainers for preschool (sometimes also worn at home)
A pair of nicer/fashion trainers (converse style) for home
A pair of wellies (for cold and wet)
A pair of sandals (smarter ones for nicer summer events)
A pair of crocs (swimming, beach)
A pair of beach/river neoprene shoes (for actually going in water)
A pair of slippers

They also both have a pair of school wellies that stay at school

And older Ds now also has
School shoes (his old preschool trainers will still be worn for outside p.e and sometimes at home)
P.e pumps
How does he need 4 pairs of shoes to go to school?!

But they all serve a different purpose and only really have one pair of shoes for each occasion, they can't often pick whatever shoes they fancy based on style/fashion. It's all based on the activity.

Mine is younger but has loads of shoes! It's only writing it down that I realise how ridiculous it is.
In my defence her feet seem to grow really slowly and she's had most of these for over a year and has got a lot of wear out of pretty much all of them.
There's also a mixture of older ones that are ready to be thrown out at the end of the summer eg both pairs of sandals were worn all of last summer and this summer. We haven't bought new sandals this year.

Smart school shoes
Trainers
Plimsolls
Converse
Espadrilles
2 x sandals
Pumps
Crocs
Party shoes (bought for a wedding)
Boots
Wellies

CoodleMoodle · 16/08/2022 23:27

My DD is 8 and she has:
School shoes
School trainers (plain black, unbranded)
Non-school trainers (black and pink, unbranded)
2x sandals
2x flip flops
Sliders
Crocs
Black boots (fashion, not hiking boots or anything)
Wellies
Water shoes

She wears all of them so I'm fine with her having so many.

DS is 4 (starting school in Sept) and he has the same, except no winter boots at the moment, and no flip flops. I don't really like them but DD begged! They're only cheap ones from Primark and she doesn't wear them all the time.

HorribleHerstory · 16/08/2022 23:40

Trainers
Sandals
walking boots

thats all, but will get school shoes for September

LER83 · 16/08/2022 23:45

DD 10
Nike trainers x2
School shoes
Dr Marten style boots
Wellies
Snow boots
Various cheap flip flops/sliders

She constantly moans she doesn't have enough footwear options, but is incredibly fussy!

DinosaurOfFire · 16/08/2022 23:52

My 10 year old has- 1 pair of trainers, 1 pair of school shoes, 1 pair of wellies. So 3 pairs.

We were going to get her sandals but her feet are wide and square and we haven't found a pair that she likes and feels comfy in yet, and we are spending a lot of time at home rather than out and about this summer, so she spends a lot of time barefoot in the garden and house.

Carrieonmywaywardsun · 16/08/2022 23:58

8yo DD has
2x summer sandals
1x converse style shoes
2x Vans trainers
1x DMs
1x nice leather knee boots for winter
1x pretty shoes for parties
And a few pairs of wellies and boots for the farm

Yayayaya20 · 17/08/2022 00:07

My similar aged children currently have school trainers, 1/2 pairs of home trainers each, wellies, going out sandals and daytime sandals plus sliders and water shoes. They ruin shoes so quickly and grow out of them so quickly that we never have too many on the go at once.

As an aside, please buy your daughter high top skate shoes. A skateboard to the ankle ain’t pleasant.

theclangersarecoming · 17/08/2022 00:35

DD nearly 10 has:
school shoes
trainers
sneakers
high top sneakers
sandals
pool flip flops
wellies
slippers

I think that’s a lot (though nearly all of them were bought in sales) so I’m hoping to cut down next year, though I suspect I’ll be made to buy different proper trainers that aren’t the black school PE ones.

Notcreativeatall · 17/08/2022 00:42

My DS 12 has one pairs of shoes- they're black trainers which he is allowed to wear to school.
He doesn't see the need for any more! Baffles me - i tried to get him to buy another pair as he was going on a camp where they recommended two pairs (as one might get wet) - i was allowed to buy an identical pair to his existing ones (and he won't wear these yet as apparently the others are fine-despite the holes!)

Twawmyarse · 17/08/2022 01:01

Aw, I'd get her the trainers she wants - it's horrible not having the "right" stuff at school (I speak from experience)!

my dd has:
school shoes
school trainers
none-school (Nike) trainers
2 pairs of doc martins
wellies & snow boots
crocs (which she lives in and would wear for every occasion if allowed)

Id be thrilled if she showed any interest in clothing/footwear actually - she literally doesn't give a hoot. Older dd has more pairs than Imelda Marcos and did even at age 10!

ShoesShoesGloriousShoes · 17/08/2022 07:11

@HippeePrincess thats why they're closed toe sandals.
@Gooseysgirl I think they assume that children know how to walk in sandals/flip flops. Certainly enough children come to school in them in the summer that they have to send out regular reminders not to wear flip flops on a day when they have P.E.!
@SunflowerDuck yes it's a state school, but not in England.

In winter she will have snow boots to wear to school and she also has two pairs of shoes specifically for indoor sport.

We had a chat this morning and it seems Nike black are what she's after. Adidas are undesirable because it seems if you wear adidas it's means you'll wet yourself 🙄

I hadn't thought about a skateboard to the ankles, tbh she just messes with it in the garden but I have told her is she is serious about learning some tricks, then I'll get her a pair which cover the ankle too. See how long DH takes to notice all the new shoes....

School shoes
1 pair of trainers both for PE and wearing at home
1 pair of smarter shoes to wear with a dress or skirt
Sandals in Summer
proper winter boots in winter
hiking boots
riding boots
slippers

DinosApple · 17/08/2022 07:24

11yo DD.
School shoes
School trainers (black and white only)
Home trainers (orange)
Tatty trainers for tree climbing
Canvas shoes
Walking boots
Flip flops
Crocs for the garden
Sandals
Wellies

What she actually wears: Term time - school shoes, rest of the time trainers.

Hermanfromguesswho · 17/08/2022 08:20

My 10 year old daughter has school shoes, PE trainers, home trainers, crocs and sandals
my boys have the same but not the sandals
one of them has hiking boots but the others don’t need them

Rwealere · 17/08/2022 08:24

School shoes
trainers for pe
trainers for home
wellies
slippers

PeekAtYou · 17/08/2022 08:25

My children wouldn't have worn shoes like your picture from around age 8/9 when they started to wear Nike or Adidas.

I'm surprised that your dd doesn't have any skate shoes like Vans tbh.

abovedecknotbelow · 17/08/2022 08:38

Way way too many!!

Sliders x2
Flip flops x 2
Sandals x1
Dm boots x1
Vans x1
Home trainers x1
'Fashion' trainers x1
Wellies x1
School trainers x1
School shoes x1

Football boots and two pairs horse boots

abovedecknotbelow · 17/08/2022 08:40

Oh and not a chance my two would wear those trainers you posted!!

chinuptitsoutonwards · 17/08/2022 08:45

Goodness.
She has summer and winter school shoes - t-bars for summer (leftover from last year) and kickers lace ups for winter.
School Trainers for PE that she keeps there.
A pair of Dr Martens boots.
A pair of wellies.
A pair of Crocs.
Two pairs of flip flops.
Aqua Shoes.
Two pairs of Sandals, an every day pair and a comfy pair.
Climbing Shoes because she goes rock climbing.
Sports Trainers.
Football Boots.
A pair of Nike Air Forces.
A pair of white Converse.
A pair of Black Converse.
A blue pair of Nike Dunks.
A black pair of Vans.
Two pairs of slippers.
A pair of pastel New Balances.
A pair of shoes for a wedding.

I think that's it.

God that's excessive writing it down however a lot of them are hand-me-downs and they get a fair lot of use save the wedding shoes, plus she's been the same size for a year and a bit.

Don't get me started on DS.

MarcelEtCeleste · 17/08/2022 09:00

This is interesting as I’m currently buying school shoes but also need to replace some home shoes for DD(11). I feel like I’m always buying shoes and they either scuff up/stain really quickly or she grows too fast to get much wear out of them. They’re always passed on or donated but still.

For school
school shoes
astro boots
football boots
Indoor runners
outdoor runners
—————-
Sliders
walking sandals
aqua shoes
riding boots
walking boots
snow boots (double as wellies)
mucky play trainers
black trainers
light coloured trainers
pastel canvas trainers
party shoe

She “needs”
smart sandal (might getaway with it this year if weather doesn’t improve)
autumn boots
The next size up in some of the above!

Floydthebarber · 17/08/2022 09:09

Oooh, tough. I think if she is asking for them and you can afford them then maybe you should. Or at least replace what she has when she grows out of them with something a bit more 'fashionable'. Brands like adidas do ones that are sturdy and good for walking.

My dd is nearly 8 and I'm really having to find that middle ground between sensible/practical/fitting in/not worrying about fitting in.

germsandcoffee · 17/08/2022 09:10

About 15 different pairs but only because her feet grow so slowly that I get bored of looking at her scruffy looking ones .
