For me in the UK - Cornwall & North Wales.
Abroad - a campsite in S. France 10 mins from St Tropez.

Not so posh
Salou & Cambrils
Tenerife
Won't be returning anytime soon.

Ile de Re, god never again.

PeanutButterOnToad · 15/08/2022 14:27

@LizzieSiddal nooo, DH and I used to go there many many years ago pre kids as he has family nearby. It was charming (and empty).

MintyGreenDreams · 15/08/2022 14:27

I'm in Hughada,Egypt atm and out hotel is full of German mc if that's a thing..and us!

30 years ago I'd have said Center Parcs.

About 15 years ago I took the DC to Cornbury Festival ( a year or two before Prince Harry went) and the least posh person there was the tv presenter in the next tent who pulled her adorable children around in a little cart saying things like 'you must keep your head scarf on X to protect your head from the sun sweetie' in a sing song voice. It became a total cliche and was then cancelled.

St Mawes, Aldeburgh, Salcombe

Is Sheringham MC? What are the MC places in north Norfolk? Thanks.

Burnham Market - also known as Chelsea on Sea, I believe. I can’t even afford to set foot on the pavements there, I’d be chased off with a broom. An artisan broom from a gallery somewhere, which had hitherto only been used to sweep up olive stones and Parmesan shavings 😂

NotQuiteUsual · 15/08/2022 14:17

Who else is looking for their holiday destination to determine their social class?

Or looking for where to avoid 🤔

I'm not middle class but it seems that we holiday middle class!

However, we are in Tenerife at the moment and must be in a very naice hotel as everyone is very polished and well spoken.

Ladywiddio · 15/08/2022 14:39

Rhoscolyn on Anglesey, has the White Eagle Pub,frequented by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, when he was posted at RAF Valley.

fruitpastille · 15/08/2022 14:40

@galliton Burnham Market probably but it's very crowded these days.

EternalPoinsettia · 15/08/2022 14:41

There's the middle class who can comfortably afford a nice holiday in Devon, Cornwall, Norfolk etc, where they do lots of surfing, paddle boarding, kids rock pooling and the like. Can afford to eat out a lot, drink expensive wine and basically enjoy it to the nth degree- no budgeting. I'd say upper middle class will also do these sorts of breaks, but at their second home for long weekends, at friends holiday homes etc- supplementing a holiday abroad in south of France, Italy or further flung. Both of these groups also do things like camping, maybe even with lots of the kit and some discomfort, not always glamping, on a site that allows their kids to run feral, back to nature, benign neglect. There's something very MC about this, and being very relaxed about it all, because it's an experience alongside other more luxurious holidays. It's never all that can be afforded

thefizz · 15/08/2022 14:47

Thread title should be where to avoid. But thanks for the heads up anyway.

Brits are totally obsessed with "class" whatever that means. Anyone got a definition of the various classes?

ElfinsMum · 15/08/2022 14:55

Yes to East Neuk of Fife - Elie in particular is Edinburgh's New Town on Sea.

We're just back from Wells in Somerset and that's definitely v Waitrose. The whole area looks so moneyed, the countryside and the towns. We were wondering: Does everyone have amazing, well paid jobs round there? Or do rich people move there?

We should do a reverse of these threads: places that are actually v beautiful but haven't been bid up by middle class weekenders yet. My vote goes to Staithes.

fyn · 15/08/2022 14:58

@thefizz why do people pretend social structures aren’t a thing in other countries. When I lived in America people wouldn’t be seen dead in Myrtle Beach because it was trashy but would go a little down the coast to Kiawah Island which was more in keeping with their social circle. It’s silly to pretend it’s an exclusively British thing.

Goawaygreta · 15/08/2022 15:03

I'm glad its not just me re:North Norfolk.
Its very very MC.
We go every summer and rent a cottage. Its easily my favourite UK holiday destination. I wish I could move there 😢
And its known for being one of the sunniest parts of the UK. Interesting as most ppl flock to Cornwall.
Burnham market is the poshest.
Some if Suffolk (bits I've been to)are similar. Eg Southwold

Goawaygreta · 15/08/2022 15:07

Just to add. I like to think we fit in ,but reality is we sound like a bunch of chavs. And we have a very obvious non local regional accent.

Kiawah is practically a suburb of Charleston. Easier to get to I'd imagine, whereas Myrtle Beach is a good trek from the city. You would imagine that the nearer place would be more popular, but you learn something new every day.

How do they stop people (not the right sort) from going to places like Kiawah?

Bootothegoose · 15/08/2022 15:14

Robin Hood's Bay/Whitby in general.

It became spot the kid in Boden. Barely spotted a single local, it was really quite sad.

NorthFaceofthelaundrypile · 15/08/2022 15:16

The queue outside The Little Fish & Chip Shop in Southwold has a distinctly MC air about it.

midsomermurderess · 15/08/2022 15:16

The first of the week’s class threads. Do you people have any other interests? The amount of insecurity on this site is off the scale, people living in terror of outing themselves as lower middle by accidentally saying ‘couch’, needing daily coaching in what they think are the ways of their betters. Madness.

I thought Courcheval was wall the wall Russian Millionaires & oligarchs?

id say Courchevel is French…..

I’d say that trying to evaluate peopele’s behaviour in other countries according to English standards is just bonkers. Because they simply don’t have the same culture and set of values.
eg in France you don’t have the British obsession about class and they did the markets of ‘being MC’ would be different.

Now if you want to play the game of ‘where are British MC people going in hols, go for it. But fgs avoid the ‘this non British island had a WC feel to it’.

Courcheval 1850 is definitely mainly Russian.
