They're probably OK.
If you have any left from the same batch, try the water test to out your mind at ease.

AnguaResurgam · 14/08/2022 12:24

You’ll be fine - they,re best before, not dangerous after

if it contained salmonella, you’d be at risk regardless of freshness

Skinterior · 14/08/2022 12:24

Assuming theyre red lion stamped you'll probably be fine

HangryDoughnut · 14/08/2022 12:24

Eggs last waaaaay past their use by dates.. if it was a bad egg you definitely would've known about it!

Luredbyapomegranate · 14/08/2022 12:25

They’ll be fine.

I use old eggs all the time for cakes and stuff. If they’re off you’d smell it.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 14/08/2022 12:26

Trust me, if they'd been off you wouldn't have been able to eat them. They're fine.

Also, lion stamped eggs are from chickens vaccinated against salmonella. And even if they weren't, you cooked them, yes?

blackheartsgirl · 14/08/2022 12:26

It was the last two eggs from the box.

they didn’t fry up very well but I just assumed that the non stick on the pan was on its way out. They tasted ok though

I always eat eggs a week or two after their BB date. Not been ill from it yet.

SunnyKlara · 14/08/2022 12:26

They're fine. I frequently eat ones hwihc are put of date by a month or so.

Before cooking, put them in a bowl of water, if they float, avoid. If they sit against the bottom they are fine. If they rotate so the part ofbthe egg touches the bottom but some is lifting they are old but fine.

Ignore the dates on the box

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 14/08/2022 12:27

Eggs don't fry or poach very well unless they're extremely fresh, but that doesn't mean they're unsafe. I'm sure you'll be fine.

JudgementalCentipede · 14/08/2022 12:27

I'm currently using eggs over a month 'out of date'. You would know a bad egg if you had one. The smell is something else. You'll be fine.

Mindymomo · 14/08/2022 12:28

You should be fine, the quality decreases, but they should be ok after 3 weeks after sell by date. Obviously this depends on where they were stored, fridge should be ok. Eat some dry bread to absorb the eggs.

Hugasauras · 14/08/2022 12:28

Eggs last ages.

Dammitthisisshit · 14/08/2022 12:29

Fine. I once cracked an off egg into a frying pan. It was an immediate putrid smell that made me gag. Trust me, if they were off you’d have known about it!

LionessesRules · 14/08/2022 12:29

You'll likely be fine.
Off eggs are really noticeable.

blackheartsgirl · 14/08/2022 12:31

Phew thanks, I was worried!

normally I’m pretty good with dates but these must have been lurking at the back of the fridge and I got them confused with another box

I really hope what you've learnt from this is not to be so aware of dates.

Eggs can be used after their best-before date - as PP have said it's not about safety but quality. I find that for eg poached eggs, only the freshest will do, and baking isn't as good if eggs are old.

But they'll be fine to use.

It really surprises me that some people are unaware of this.

Ariela · 14/08/2022 12:38

If in doubt about your eggs - and they can last WEEKS after the stamped date, a simple way to test is fill a basin with water and put the eggs in. If they float they are off - crack one and you'll get that 'bad egg' smell of sulphur dioxide - that's what is making it float. If they sink they're fine. If the bob about just under the surface they're also fine - but use them soonish.

Anytimeiseeit · 14/08/2022 12:41

Op eggs don’t need to be kept in the fridge so if you were keeping them there then you’ve extended their life anyway

Fifthtimelucky · 14/08/2022 12:44

They will be fine. I often eat eggs past their best by date. If they were bad you'd know as soon as you cracked them open.

fyn · 14/08/2022 12:46

Just ignore the dates on eggs. If it floats don’t in a bowl of water don’t eat it, if it sinks to the bottom it’s fine.

Eggs in the UK don’t need to be refrigerated. American eggs must be refrigerated because they wash them which removes the protective layer (called a bloom) that keeps out bacteria. They aren’t washed in the UK so don’t need to be kept in the fridge.

Squashedraddish · 14/08/2022 12:47

Eggs last loads after their sell by date. I frequently eat eggs 2 weeks past their date. I test them first in water to see if they’ve gone bad. You would definitely know if the egg had gone bad- they absolutely stink

Hotandbothereds · 14/08/2022 12:50

Yeah I never check dates on eggs, you’d know the minute you cracked it if it was off and if it was boiled but off you’d know by taste - you’ll be fine OP.

liveforsummer · 14/08/2022 12:54

You'd have known if they were not ok. They would stink and taste foul. Eggs last weeks after their bb date. These days it's incredibly rare for eggs to have salmonella and practically non existed for shop bought
