I have nits 😩

ThePenIsBlue · 13/08/2022 21:06

After itching for a few days and finding nothing, I have just seen some in my daughters hair so need to assume I’ve got them too. I have never dealt with nits before. Please tell me what I need to buy tomorrow and what I need to do and how often - I feel so grossed out. We are going on holiday on Wednesday as well 😩😩😩😩😩😩

contact your doctors on Monday and I’m sure you can’t get treatment on prescription otherwise go to a chemist and ask what the best treatments are. I’m lucky my teen daughter has never had them.

Horcruxe · 13/08/2022 21:10

Right.

Get some treatment.

Best one I found was lyclear.

Get a nitty gritty comb and some conditioner.

Then use the lyclear use the comb with it. Comb through both yours and your daughter hair.

Then 5 days later use plenty of conditioner all over your and daughter hair. Lather it on. And use nitty gritty comb.

Repeat this every 5 days with the conditioner and using nitty gritty. Until you've have 3 sessions without any live lice.

Locally you cant get treatment on prescription

nyclear gel, nitty gritty comb and nitty gritty shampoo for use after nyclear.

dementedpixie · 13/08/2022 21:13

Go to the chemist or even a supermarket and get something like hedrin that will suffocate them. Also buy a nit comb so you can comb them out too. You can also use conditioner on the hair plus the comb and get even more out. You'll need to repeat treatment to catch any newly hatched lice. Comb every few days for 3 weeks

MbatataOwl · 13/08/2022 21:13

Nitwits. Spray on and wash out. It's great for Afro and curly hair too as you don't need to comb the nits out. I usually apply it again a day or two later just to make sure the bits are dead.

MbatataOwl · 13/08/2022 21:13

Nits*/lice

dementedpixie · 13/08/2022 21:14

You dont need a GP appointment as you can buy stuff in supermarkets and chenists

dementedpixie · 13/08/2022 21:15

P.s. nits are the empty egg shells and lice are the critters that hatch from them

Thewheelsfalloffthebus · 13/08/2022 21:18

It depends a little bit on how easier it is to thoroughly comb your hair.
If you have fairly easy to comb hair, you actually don’t need all the insecticide shampoos. You can just manually comb all the lice and eggs out. Liberal use of conditioner helps and a proper nit comb is a necessity. You need to comb through everyone’s hair in the family every day for a few days then a couple of times a week for about a month to make sure any missed nits that hatch are picked up before the baby lice start to reproduce again. To be honest even with the chemical treatments, you still have to physically all the nits because it’s likely some will survive and hatch if you don’t.
Your local pharmacist will know what treatments currently work best on the local nit population - they tend to develop resistance to treatments annoyingly rapidly.

EinsteinaGogo · 13/08/2022 21:20

Gah.

What a pain 🤬🤬🤬

Had this several times when the kids where around 8-9-10.

Supermarket or chemist. Massive bottle of conditioner. Nitty Gritty comb. Couple of bottles of Hedrin to do the family.

Treat everyone as per instructions, then slather conditioner on and comb through with Nitty Gritty comb to remove eggs and remaining lice.

Repeat the condtioner and combing every couple of days.

Wash bedding etc on hot.
Freeze any cuddle bed toys.

Bloody faff but needed.
Good luck 💕

Honestly! Don't you think GP'a have enough to do!! Whatever are you thinking to say contact them about nits 🙄

dementedpixie · 13/08/2022 21:23

You dont need to wash bedding any more than you usually would and you don't need to freeze toys either.

Don't share brushes or combs and clean hair out of them.

Thanks all - I’d never contact the GP for nits 😂

weve got a big Tesco near us and a boots. I’ll head to the Tesco tomorrow. My hair is curly and a PITA to comb. Impossible nearly. Daughters hair is straight and fine so easier.

I’ve got a couple of boys that probably could do with a treatment as well. This is the last thing I need before a holiday!!!

so am I right in thinking that you put a treatment on to kill the things, then conditioner just to make it easier to slide a comb through?

I get what you’re saying and appreciate it, but It hadn’t even crossed my mind - I don’t think our gp would even give a call back for this. And probably rightly so….

Some chemists have a minor ailments scheme where you can get certain prescription products for things like headlice, worms, etc for free if they would normally get free prescriptions.

Best to treat ASAP though so buying from a supermarket tomorrow would start the treatment faster

lookingformeavain · 13/08/2022 21:31

OP, before you comb them out with a nit comb, drug them

Buy a small bottle of cheap vodka. Soak the hair in it then put a shower cap over the top. Leave for an hour, better yet overnight

You'll suffocate/intoxicate them and it's them easier to comb them out as they lose their grip on the hair

justasmalltownmum · 13/08/2022 21:32

Nit shampoo and comb (comes in the box). You can order on Amazon too or from any local pharmacy

mrsfollowill · 13/08/2022 21:32

If you re in the UK get some Lyeclear from the chemist or supermarket - don't mess about with combing/conditioner or Hedrin- they do not do the best job ime but a blast of Lyeclear will work straightaway. I say this from bitter experience!
DS got them in reception so 5 ish yrs old- he had a crew cut anyway so was easy to treat. I have very thick curly bra strap length hair and got them from him. Spent 12 months trying to get rid Hmm the Lyeclear did it in the end.

dementedpixie · 13/08/2022 21:33

You wouldn't use the conditioner at the same time as the treatment you'd use it in between treatments.

Check the boys' hair with conditioner and a nit comb before putting any treatments on as you wouldn't treat if they don't have lice

Losingthewill12 · 13/08/2022 21:35

Like I said I never had to deal with this my eldest has never had them and it was merely a suggestion. My GP’s are very good when I’ve had concerns for my children they’ll send a prescription or advice etc.

first time commenting here too so thanks Karen 🙄

dementedpixie · 13/08/2022 21:36

Stop with the Karen crap!

Losingthewill12 · 13/08/2022 21:39

You are such a friendly bunch 😳

XenoBitch · 13/08/2022 21:39

I had really bad nits in my late 20s. Didn't even catch them from a child. No idea where they came from. I let it get really bad as I was horribly depressed and didn't care.
My mum dragged me to Boots and got a treatment. Nothing from GP or over counter. It wasn't expensive, and one lot of treatment sorted it out. I also dyed my hair.
