I have nits 😩

After itching for a few days and finding nothing, I have just seen some in my daughters hair so need to assume I’ve got them too. I have never dealt with nits before. Please tell me what I need to buy tomorrow and what I need to do and how often - I feel so grossed out. We are going on holiday on Wednesday as well 😩😩😩😩😩😩

Like I said I never had to deal with this my eldest has never had them and it was merely a suggestion. My GP’s are very good when I’ve had concerns for my children they’ll send a prescription or advice etc.

first time commenting here too so thanks Karen 🙄

😂

Another good tip is to spray your hair with vinegar and if possible leave it on over night. The acid in the vinegar eats away the nit eggs and kills them.

It doesn't kill the nits though unfortunately but helps break the cycle.

GrandmaSharkdodo · 13/08/2022 21:54

In my job I've seen looots of cases of headlice. I've had them several times myself. The best thing is combing and combing and combing. The OTC treatments can be effective too but you still need to comb all of the buggers out. Please don't do any of the crazy home remedies such as vinegar or saltwater or mayonnaise, definitely not vodka, especially on your child's head. None of these work. Try an otc treatment if you like but comb every day for the first week.

The thing we've found best is a mouthwash. Yes, I think it's called Listerin.

Dd has hair nearly down to her knees so nits is a big issue. You just can't get Hedrin etc to cover the hair enough.

So Listerin, about £6 for a large bottle. That gives dd 2-3 treatments. Soak dry hair in it totally down to the roots and put all your hair under a shower cap. Leave it for 15 minutes. Wash as normal.
Ideally comb out with a nit comb.

Then I normally do it again after 6 days then again after 12. Occasionally a fourth has been needed but very rarely, and I've normally suspected it was a reinfection.

User1567 · 13/08/2022 23:02

We had It really bad and I was doing daily nit combing. Caught loads but it get very tedious after a while. I used Hedrin once on my children and myself on the 5th day and it killed all of them. We were clear straight away after.
next time I will go straight for the hedrin once. I did leave it on for quite a few hours not the 15 min which it said on the box.

contact your doctors on Monday and I’m sure you can’t get treatment on prescription otherwise go to a chemist and ask what the best treatments are. I’m lucky my teen daughter has never had them.

Doctor? For nits?? Confused
Just go to a chemist

knackeredagain · 13/08/2022 23:34

Combing is everything. Get yourself some really cheap conditioner, the 39p supermarket own brand stuff, and comb daily for a week.
Use a bit treatment too, if you like, but you need to keep on top of the eggs.

Karen? Do you know the poster or are you being horribly rude.

ThePenIsBlue · 14/08/2022 06:37

What about her hairbrushes we’ve been using? I’ll also need to brush my hair to make it comb-able. And obviously we’ve been using brushes the past week, and sharing them. Do I have to do anything to treat them?

BigBunkers · 14/08/2022 06:54

Others have given good advice but my 2p is to treat the hair then dry and straighten it. Try and get as close to the roots as possible to kill any remaining eggs

templesit · 14/08/2022 07:42

I am sure you can get a zapping comb off Amazon/ eBay where you comb through and on contact with the comb zaps and kills them- may be live lice only?

Love the alternative suggestions!

sleepy78 · 14/08/2022 07:54

To answer the question about combs, yes, you need to wash anything that your heads have touched. So bedsheets obviously, plus towels, rugs on the sofa, coats and hats etc... it's a real pain in the arse but all it takes is a couple of stray ones and you'll have to start again. I put all combs and hair bands in a jug of boiling water and that seems to do the trick.

Please don't waste a doctor's time for this!!

Just buy a Nitty Gritty not comb and some conditioner and wet comb the hair throughly every 3 days until it's clear. Check in 2 weeks time. Make sure you do everyone in the family on the same days.

See a pharmacist for a medicated shampoo if this doesn't work.

dementedpixie · 14/08/2022 09:12

You clean hair out combs/brushes and wash them and then dont share them. Lice don't last long away from the head so you don't need to go overboard with other cleaning (if worms were involved then washing of bedding and towels would be recommended but not head lice)

FlibbertyGibbitt · 14/08/2022 10:01

Nit comb and lots and lots of Conditioner… mind if you have curly hair will be a bit of a nightmare…(speaking form experience) comb onto loo paper. Misss doing my kids now as they’ve grown up, was very therapeutic!

yikesanotherbooboo · 14/08/2022 10:44

I used to comb through with conditioner and a nit comb for 2-3 weeks alternate days .
The otc remedies work but you still need to do some combing so I preferred to avoid the stronger remedies particularly as DD had a terrible run of nits where I would have been treating her, her DBS and myself on a very regular basis.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 14/08/2022 11:01

Gdcs had them (maybe still do) and I think I might have caught some after having them to stay for 3 days and nights - I’m a bit itchy! First time we’ve ever had to deal with them.

I bought some Hedrin yesterday, which it says to leave on for 8 hours or overnight, so also bought a pack of 3 clear shower caps from Boots, £1.50. Treatment has to be repeated after 7 days to catch any that have since hatched, so 🤞.

Dd found that slathering their hair (Gd1’s is long and very thick) with loads of conditioner, before using the nit comb, resulted in a really good haul. She sent a pic of what came out of Gdd1’s hair. I’d post it here but wouldn’t want to put anyone off their lunch!

Jumpking · 14/08/2022 11:23

That sucks. Know you're not the only adult to ever get them. It's just another grim thing to deal with. Loads of good advice here. Can't recommend the nitty gritty comb highly enough myself.

And, if it's any consolation, I had to try to get nit lotion in Cambodia a few years back. That was a fun load of gesturing and confused faces! Boots will be much easier for you.

fruitpastille · 14/08/2022 11:30

Get a treatment that contains dimeticone. This will suffocate the lice and the eggs. Comb in sections with a nit comb and wipe it on loo roll as you go. Repeat a few days later.

You can just use conditioner but you have to repeat more times to get them all as if you miss a couple of eggs the cycle will begin again.

NHS has advice if you google.

fruitpastille · 14/08/2022 11:31

Also watch Motherland season 3, episode 1 (bits blitz) to cheer yourself up!

ChsmpagneWannaBe · 14/08/2022 11:40

Don't wash bedding that's not needed.
Maybe pillow case but nothing else

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 14/08/2022 12:16

@ThePenIsBlue , dd advised me to pour boiling water on any hairbrushes I’d used for Gdcs.

TheVanguardSix · 14/08/2022 12:21

Hedrin Once, OP.
That's the bomb you need. Easy and it works! It's the only thing that worked for me.

Hedrin Once and a nit comb.
Don't forget to set fire to the bedding. 😆
Actually, a good hot cycle and some vinegar in the wash will do.

Babymamaroon · 14/08/2022 12:23

Hot wash your bedding too! Crucial to ensuring they're gone!!

Good luck. Bloody hate nits...
