I have nits 😩

ThePenIsBlue · 13/08/2022 21:06

After itching for a few days and finding nothing, I have just seen some in my daughters hair so need to assume I’ve got them too. I have never dealt with nits before. Please tell me what I need to buy tomorrow and what I need to do and how often - I feel so grossed out. We are going on holiday on Wednesday as well 😩😩😩😩😩😩

second Hedrin and a nutty gritty comb.

MsMcGonagall · 14/08/2022 12:33

yes OP treatment first, then comb out, needs to be the nitty gritty comb, you can add conditioner before the comb out to help.

I've not user hedrin, I have used Vamousse - which was really effective. I repeated after 1 week but there were no new nits

ThePenIsBlue · 14/08/2022 12:38

Three hours later….I have done the whole family. It was nearly impossible to comb out. It was like the comb was never going to come out clean. I am Pretty sure I didn’t get every egg out of all the hair. The lyclear literally made the hair crunchy, so it was really difficult and painful. I’m hoping even if I didn’t get all the eggs out they are now dead and so won’t hatch again?

Thanks for all the advice. Just another parenting high I have now experienced!

I struggled to get my own hair clear of them. I treated myself twice and still had them. So covered my hair in coconut oil and put a shower cap on and left it for hours and combed through. That’s what did it for me. I imagine olive oil would also work.

ThePenIsBlue · 14/08/2022 13:56

Now I’ve rinsed out the lyclear and her hair is dry, I can still see some tiny white dots in my daughters hair 😫😫😫😫 will they be dead because of the treatment? Or do I have to condition later and comb out again?

Hedrin and nitty gritty comb. You need to keep combing. That said the best thing is to have your/family's hair "vacuumed" at one of the Hairforce clinics, if you live close to one. hairforceclinics.com/ They are a bit pricey, but worth it.

dementedpixie · 14/08/2022 14:43

White cases are empty. You can try scraping them out with your finger nails

Unhatched ones are a darker colour

Bumblenums · 14/08/2022 15:09

Do the nit treatment stuff then for two weeks every other day slather in conditioner and COMB COMB COMB with a nitty gritty. If u miss one the buggers come back. Do everyone in ur family. Plant child in front of tv with a snack while u do it. Wipe off the comb in water with every comb. Pay attention to back of neck and round the ears, they like warmest bits on ur head😖

FartNRoses · 14/08/2022 15:21

I sizzled mine to death!

In other words, I straightened my hair with straightening irons. That got rid of A LOT of them!

Little disgusting shits!

ThePenIsBlue · 14/08/2022 15:27

contact your doctors on Monday and I’m sure you can’t get treatment on prescription otherwise go to a chemist and ask what the best treatments are. I’m lucky my teen daughter has never had them.

GPs do not do prescriptions for this nowdays. Conditioner and combing os recommended or get something from chemist.

Oh darn. Have I missed you biting back? 🙃

Do everyone in the family at least twice with hedrin mousse stuff more expensive but easier. We made mistake of thinking DH would be fine first time.
Assume they are still there after 2 weeks. We had to treat for a month! Little feckers. Comb with the conditioner at least once a month for 6 months.
This may seem OTT but just one egg left in the family hair and off you go again.
Good luck !

Gah, I feel your pain. My DD’s have had headlice a handful of times now and I got them once as a result. Horrible. I’ve always used hedrin personally, the stuff you leave in for about 30 mins then wash out and it’s always worked well. I comb through once it’s been washed out to make sure they’re all gone then comb again a week later to double check.

Once discovered them in DD’s hair on Christmas Day of all days, that was fun!

OnceRuralNowUrbanbliss · 15/08/2022 07:42

Nitty gritty comb with conditioner morning and night for a few days. They'll soon be gone. I feel your pain as I was infested last year. The horror!

NothingIsWrong · 15/08/2022 07:50

I once found one crawling up my neck while I was commuting to work. I completely freaked out and had to comb my hair in the loos at work after an emergency nitty gritty purchase. I hate them.

DOCTORS FOR NITS?!

No. Just no.

Bollindger · 15/08/2022 08:23

Get the Comb and use it everyday, it pulls the egg shells out as well as the actually bugs.
We always comb as soon as they come home, every day, it stops them even getting a foot hold and we didn't have to use chemicals.

RewildingAmbridge · 15/08/2022 08:33

I don't know if it actually works or I was just lucky but my mum used to use teatree shampoo and conditioner on my hair after I got nits once at reception age. I have thick curly hair and it would've been a nightmare to treat, apparently they don't like teatree so washing hair in that daily was a preventive to getting them again

TooHotToTangoToo · 15/08/2022 08:33

Go to your local chemist and talk to them. I got some over the counter stuff for me and dd which worked well

BronzeSage · 15/08/2022 08:38

Do what Horcruxe suggested. It works.

Bunnycat101 · 15/08/2022 09:40

From bitter experience there is an oily lyclear and a really dry one. The dry shampoo made the hair feel horrendous and really hard to comb through. The oily one makes their hair oily for ages but is much easier to comb though. What I would recommend though is a ton of conditioner and a nitty gritty every night for the next week moving to every other night for the second week.

I also try do a weekly comb of my girls as prevention is much easier. I’d got a bit lax with my 3yo and she had a bad case and managed to infect us and grandparents. I thought I’d have noticed them then as she had very fine blonde hair. Previously because of the weekly combing we’d only ever had very small infections of one child with no spreading.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 15/08/2022 10:43

I used Hedrin last night, let it dry and left it on overnight, so 🤞. Will repeat after a week, though, to catch any new hatchlings.
Plus will change the sheets!

Oily would have been much better. I don’t know why it says you need to put it (or conditioner) in dry hair though, if you could wet the hair and then slather in conditioner or the medicine it would make the
combing so much easier.
I think my kids are slightly traumatised from the initial session as it was so painful 😖 lots of bribery will be required to allow me to do this again I fear…..

ThePenIsBlue Try the spray instead - it’s the oily stuff and much easier. I was shocked how matter the hair was with the shampoo. Not surprised yours weren’t keen on the combing.
