Something awful happened to me..

2 nights ago something pretty bad happened, I don't want to explain or go into it.

Apart from the feelings associated and feel thoroughly depressed, I just don't know what to do.

Im trying to find a film or a book, preferably a book just to take my mind of things. I cant go out anywhere but I need to do something as distraction.

Can you recommend any books I can read? I like a lot of true life stuff and I also like crime and action books. I'll also read young adult and some romance.

I have the kindle app.

Any help would be great! Thanks

I've told a friend a very watered down version. I don't really feel like I can talk to anyone.

Im now downloading tetris to try. I might find a TV series, I enjoyed scorpion so I might rematch that.

My heart is so sad 😞

The Stranger Times, audiobook. I can't recommend it enough.

Himself, audiobook. Bloody brilliant.

The Chronicles of St Mary's, so many books, great fun and go at a cracking pace.

Rivers of London, narration by the sublime Kobna.

All really good at distracting you.

DisforDarkChocolate · 13/08/2022 21:59

If you fancy a game, Tiny Bubbles. Got my through a very hard time. It's beautiful to look at too, very calming.

Oh you poor thing, I'm so sorry.

As far as films go, Sisters with Tina Fey and Amy Poehler is absolutely hilarious.

If you like animation Epic is really lovely too.

EmmaH2022 · 13/08/2022 22:34

How about the film This Beautiful Fantastic? humorous, gentle, uplifting, Andrew Scott.

AceSpades54321 · 13/08/2022 22:44

Sometimes suppressing the sadness makes it 100 times worse. It’s okay to cry and feel sad. I’m sorry you’ve had such a terrible experience.

Doobydoo · 13/08/2022 22:49

Sprry to hear this Op. I echo Robert Galbraith...the Cormoran Strike series. Also Nicci French...the Freda Klein series. Kate Atkinson..Jackson Brodie series and any of her other books. Also Tana French The Dublin murders series....all are brill. Ann Cleeves Vera Stanhope series are fab and her Shetland series is too.

Doobydoo · 13/08/2022 22:54

Hi OP, I'm sorry to hear you've had such a bad experience, and there are some great suggestions on this thread.

If it would help, and I do recommend them, please consider speaking to the wonderful Samaritan helpline. Any time of the day or night.
You can call them on 116 123.

Take care BrewFlowers

I'm so sorry OP, that's really sad to read.

I don't have film suggestions, but at times when my mind is troubled I've found listening to familiar music, loud, to be really helpful (mind the neighbours!).

In the meantime, I have a lovely snuggly dog here, I'll get her to send you a gentle hug.

mintich · 13/08/2022 23:00

I binge watch Sex and the City or the US Office when I need to distract myself and feel better

shreddednips · 13/08/2022 23:01

I'm so sorry to hear that OP, I hope you feel better soon. I went through a hard time a while back and found that listening to audiobooks was very distracting- books from my childhood were especially comforting. The Paddington Bear stories in particular 🥰

WinterMusings · 13/08/2022 23:06

@Hurtingneedssoothing

I'm so sorry xx you keep saying you're so sad,. I presume then it was someone you trusted not to hurt you. Does this mean you've ended a relationship too?

maybe it would do you good to tell your friend the undiluted version.

do you need to report it?

I can't focus enough on books when I need distracting. Or movies for that matter.

it's Mumsnet all the way.

(((HUG)))

Hurtingneedssoothing · 13/08/2022 23:15

Thank you so much everyone, you're all so nice.

I havent reported it, I don't want to. The samaritans link reminded me of shout who I've used before. Does anyone know if I were to tell them what happened would they call the police? I'd feel too ashamed telling someone I know.

Im just hoping I'll start to feel a bit better if I try to be kind to myself, im not very good at that usually. Any tips for getting over the next few days? Physically and mentally. Physically I can rest, and have baths. Mentally I'm thinking books, films, TV shows and I think the games idea is a good idea, any good games?

Im listening to Mr voice on tiktok he's got a great voice and he's reading one of my favourite books. I'll have a little look at some games

Might not be your cup of tea nor is it crime or action but 'The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry' by Rachel Joyce captivated me and I'm not a fiction fan normally. It's the sort of book that you can feel, sense and easily visualise the story and characters due to the brilliant author. I was going through a bad time when I read this and it really helped me escape. I always look back on the book with fondness. I'm sorry you've had an awful experience 💐

Such a beautiful book about personal struggles, there's also an interesting interview with the author on a radio 4 podcast.

Kerrrmieee · 13/08/2022 23:21

I've just read We Are Liars - it's young adult fiction, and not my normal cup of tea, but it's picturesque and lovely with a 'what happened to...' theme, and a twist! Loved it.

I'm all for psycho thrillers and detective novels but if you are feeling delicate, definitely search for it.

I think it's free with Prime reading.

Take care xx

RicherThanYew · 13/08/2022 23:23

Hello Op, I'm sorry you're having a tough time. I have CPTSD from childhood among other things and I find it soothing to read Famous Five books when I'm struggling to cope, all the friendly jolly old England stuff is almost like asmr for my nerves. All the best 😊

crashingthunderandlove · 13/08/2022 23:27

I'm currently reading Where the Crawdads Sing. It's beautifully written. You really can escape with this book, it's a perfect book to read in this balmy weather

Upwardtrajectory · 13/08/2022 23:33

I go for easy reading if concentration isn’t so hot - someone has already suggested Jenny Colgan, and I’d add Milly Johnson to that recommendation.
I also often turn to children’s books as a bit of escapism - Enid Blyton being as personal favourite.

Richard Osman’s Thursday Murder Club is fabulous as an audiobook - available on Audible.

Take care x

ThreeLocusts · 13/08/2022 23:36

So sorry OP.

For something entirely different, perhaps Luis Bunuel films? The discreet charm of the bourgeoisie or The phantom of liberty? Last time I looked there were free links for those.

The Solaris remake with George Clooney. The original Solaris. Most films by the director of Solaris, especially Ivan's Childhood. Though that's not really escapism, more a kind of meditation.

It sounds like you're at the beginning of a long road. Wishing you strength.

saltwaterandsuncream · 13/08/2022 23:36

I go back to comforting childrens books when I'm feeling low, too. OP I second calling the Samaritans. I have a close friend who volunteers with them and they are there to listen.

I find series like Gilmore Girls or Parks and Recreation are great for easy watching of comfort food like shows!

I'm so sorry this happened. Keep looking after yourself.

crashingthunderandlove · 13/08/2022 23:36

@MargaretThursday I also revert back to childhood books at times of great stress. I agree that the innocence is so soothing. My go to childhood books are Enid Blyton's The Famous Five. And the Jill pony books by Ruby Ferguson.

OP I hope you can find something to ease your pain and soothe your mind. Sending you healing thoughts

MorrisZapp · 13/08/2022 23:40

YouTube has thousands of relaxing videos to suit any niche. I'm hooked on driving in the rain videos, and inflight cockpit chatter videos. I find the white noise effect really soothing.

ChillyFloss · 13/08/2022 23:40

I also like crime fiction. Try Kate Atkinsons Jackson Brodie books. I've read all of them three times (and I never read anthing twice).

Hope you are OK.💐

Hurtingneedssoothing · 13/08/2022 23:44

So many recommendations, ill write them all out tomorrow and look at each one. It will give me something to do for a while to take my mind off things.

The mental pain is worse than the physical so I didn't think I need a Dr. Ive taken painkillers though and a sleeping tablet to hopefully help me sleep. I've texted shout and I'm just waiting for someone to become free.

You all make me feel less lonely, thank yoh
