2 nights ago something pretty bad happened, I don't want to explain or go into it.

Apart from the feelings associated and feel thoroughly depressed, I just don't know what to do.

Im trying to find a film or a book, preferably a book just to take my mind of things. I cant go out anywhere but I need to do something as distraction.

Can you recommend any books I can read? I like a lot of true life stuff and I also like crime and action books. I'll also read young adult and some romance.

I have the kindle app.

Any help would be great! Thanks

And the mountains echoed by Khaled Hosseini. It’s generation spanning, overarching themes and interconnected lives/families/stories.

Sorry that you are having a tough time. Kate Atkinsons Detective stories are very engrossing the first book in the series is called Case Histories.

SunnyD44 · 13/08/2022 16:14

Are you on antidepressants?

I know when my mood is starting to get low because I can’t concentrate on any movies or books.

I don’t think you can just distract your way out of depression unfortunately.

Go and see your gp for some antidepressants and then get into a series or book.

Hi op, I read constantly, and review for Netgalley, and while I mainly read crime and thrillers, these are some more light hearted one that were absolutely fantastic and should help to distract you.

Hope you're ok Flowers

Jane Fallon - Faking Friends (or most of her others)
Beth O'Leary - The Flat Share
Luanne Moriarty - lots of her books are fab
Gail Honeyman - Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine
Debbie Rix - The Photograph (love all of hers)

And if you do like Crime and Thrillers, the following authors have fantastic books:

Shalini Boland
Rachel Abbott
Robert Bryndza
Angela Marsons
Alison James

Thanks so much! I can look all of these up and hopefully find something. There's lots of options.

I was assaulted, physically im healing but it's just mentally. All I want to do is curl up in softness and read/watch something and just give myself a bit of time.

I can't recommend The Keeper of Lost Things by Ruth Hogan highly enough. It's a beautiful story to get lost within.

Take care

Wishihadanalgorithm · 13/08/2022 17:53

I would recommend Hart of Dixie (ITV Hub) and Virgin River (Netflix). Both begin with the same premise - female medic moves to a small country doctors but they’re lovely and frothy and good escape TV. I would go for Hart of Dixie first, it’s very lighthearted and looks so bright and cheerful.

I hope you feel brighter soon, OP.

For YA fiction Id really recommend Karen McManus books or the good girls guide to murder set. They are generally about murder, but they are not too heavy but I find them absorbing and it takes my mind off what else is going in in my life. I also watch Friends & Gavin & Stacey for the same reasons. Hope you find something that takes your mind off it all.

I go back to the things from my childhood. I have The King of the Copper Mountain by Paul Biegel, it's about an aged king and how the animals in his kingdom tell him stories to keep him alive whilst a doctor travels the kingdom to find a cure for his ailment.

Also, About Time by David Rooney is about how historically we have measured time, and it's a lovely book.

I hope you're ok.

BeBraveLittlePenguin · 13/08/2022 18:46

The Carole and Jude crime books are easiest of easy reading, plus there loads of them if you enjoy the first and want to binge.
Thursday Murder Club x 2.
Rivers of London series

Oh gosh I haven’t thought of ‘King of the Copper Mountain’ in years. I loved that book.

I also hope you are ok op and have some to support Flowers

I find children's books better distraction when I need that. They're a bit simpler and have an innocence that I need.

I would read some Jenny Colgan books. Full of warm humour and gentle love and joy. Wishing you a swift recovery Flowers

These are great although I can't work out how to buy them on kindle, is there a different reading app I can try?

Now it's nighttime the sadness is really hitting, I feel so sore and sad and I just don't really know what to do.

What's playbooks like?

Greenandcabbagelooking · 13/08/2022 19:08

The family upstairs by Lisa Jewell, and it’s sequel, The family remains.

Flavabobble · 13/08/2022 19:14

For something that will utterly absorb you and take you out of yourself I'd recommend "Project Hail Mary" by Andy Weir. I read a lot - (love the cormoran strike books) but this is by far one of the best books I've read in the last few years.

Hurtingneedssoothing · 13/08/2022 20:20

I seem to be struggling with reading. Any more film suggestions please? My mind is spiralling and I feel so low

could you manage audio books? I used to borrow them from the library for my mum?
Kindle have audio version of a lot of thier books. I downloaded the Kindle app onto my iPad, I’ve had it for ages and can’t recall how I did it. Probably from the App Store.
I get e books from Amazon to my kindle app. If you have Amazon Prime you get a free book every month, if you don’t like it you can choose another free one and ‘return’ the previous one.
Sorry you’ve such an ordeal, hope you’re getting real life help

ithoughtitmihtbenicetochat · 13/08/2022 21:10

Try playing Tetris.
I have been doing some trauma informed learning and apparently it can help process trauma memories. And help lessen the chance of PTSD.
I know this isn't what you asked, but try it.

Cyberworrier · 13/08/2022 21:20

OP, sorry to hear you've been assaulted. That's awful. Have you told anyone in real life? Friends if not authorities?
When I can't concentrate to read, I enjoy audiobooks. I have the Libby App, which is free, it's like the public library app.
I'd maybe go back to something I know and love to listen to in your shoes. Maybe a book I really love, like Gone With the Wind or Pride and Prejudice or one that's entertaining, like a PG Wodehouse Jeeves and Wooster.

Also- there are helplines you can call if you are struggling and would like to try to talk to a stranger. Refuge has a helpline for victims of domestic abuse and you could call Mind if you are struggling with your feelings after what has happened to you.

Pumperthepumper · 13/08/2022 21:26

What about rewatching a tv series? Something you’re already familiar with so don’t have to concentrate too hard on - for me it’s the American Office.

elephantbreathing · 13/08/2022 21:26

I've just read 'How w to kill your family'...good book for escapism.

Notmyonlyname · 13/08/2022 21:53

Try the Chronicles of St Mary’s by Jodi Taylor- history & time travel, so good to lose yourself in. Also a Discovery of Witches (books & tv series). So good for lighthearted escapism. Hope you’re ok xx
