Is it normal to have them?

OP posts:
ClocksGoingBackwards · 12/08/2022 08:11

It is if you have a garden

LittleBearPad · 12/08/2022 08:11

Do you have a garden?

WinterMusings · 12/08/2022 08:12

If you have a house yes, 4th storey flat not so much.

HerLadySheep · 12/08/2022 08:12

Yes, if you have a garden. It's certainly not an unusual item

IglesiasPiggl · 12/08/2022 08:13

Outdoor water supply is the norm for houses with gardens, yes

hugoagogo · 12/08/2022 08:14

Have a garden, mostly it gets rained on, lately not so much.

Justcallmebebes · 12/08/2022 08:15

I have one and a garden

hugoagogo · 12/08/2022 08:18

Seems bonkers to pour tap water outside in large quantities?
I suppose if lots of people are doing it, then banning them might make a difference.

I have one, and most people do.

I have sandy soil, and nothing would survive in my garden in the summer if it didn't get watered occasionally. If there's a ban here my garden will be a desert.

(I don't water the lawn, that would be a waste of water. Just the plants)

AnneLovesGilbert · 12/08/2022 08:28

Are you claiming you don’t know how people water their gardens? Are you really?

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 12/08/2022 08:29

Well, now is probably not the best time to go out and buy one.,

You get that people don't just put the eater on and leave ot to all rin down the drain right? They water their plants when its dry, fill paddling pools, hose down the kids, attach it ot the sprinkler to water the grass etc.

PuttingDownRoots · 12/08/2022 08:33

Mine comes in pretty handy to water the vegetables which we then eat...

(And yes.. we have a water butt on our Christmas list. We are pretty new to house ownership and having garden space for such things)

bloodywhitecat · 12/08/2022 08:36

I have lived in houses where I had a hosepipe and lived in houses where I didn't. My last garden was courtyard sized and I could water the plants with a watering can. This garden is bigger than a tennis court, I have a hosepipe not to water the plants because I can do that with grey water but to clean out the chickens' garden and keep their space clean.

SudocremOnEverything · 12/08/2022 08:41

There’s one in my yard. I’ve used it about twice in three years. Even when I lived in houses with gardens, I almost never used a hose.

im not one of life’s gardeners though. 🤣

polkadotpixie · 12/08/2022 08:43

We have one but if DH didn't use it, it would never get used 🤣

EquallyDivided · 12/08/2022 08:59

We have one, our outdoor tap is in an awkward place and we can't get a watering can under it so has to be filled from the kitchen sink and our water butt does not hold enough. We also use it to pressure wash the patio, hose off muddy mountain bikes, fill paddling pools when the DCs were little. I also use one at the allotment.

Not if people are growing things that they’ll eat.

Even if they’re just using the water for flowers, a lot of people get a huge amount of pleasure from their gardens. Many of the older people around her seem to live for their gardens because it’s one of the few joys they have left. I don’t know how anyone has the heart to tell them they should watch all their efforts go to waste just because the water companies are inefficient.

Lulu1919 · 12/08/2022 09:04

In a house yes I think it's quite normal....washing cars watering garden etc ?

BogRollBOGOF · 12/08/2022 09:23

I rarely pull mine out across the garden, but I leave it clipped on to the tap because the tap was installed at about knee height so is bloody awkward to get anything like the watering can under it. Although my watering can is normally filled from the water butt.

Hosepipes get banned as they're a prolonged flow of water and can be used quite inefficiently. Watering cans are more targeted.

BeanieTeen · 12/08/2022 09:53

Err how do you think people with children fill up their paddling pools?
Washing cars
People jet wash their patios and drives
We also use our hosepipe to wash the dog after a muddy walk (on a gentle setting obviously, not like a jet wash 😂)
And then obviously to water plants outside - it hasn’t rained much - hence the hosepipe ban…- so collecting rainwater isn’t always an option.

I think you’re a bit bonkers OP to not know this tbh.

megletthesecond · 12/08/2022 09:56

I only bought one in the pandemic to fill a paddling pool. Probably use it twice a year for that reason.
I use a watering can or washing up bowl water to water my garden.

YorkieTheRabbit · 12/08/2022 09:56

We’ve got two hosepipes, also have three water butts and troughs to catch rain water . We’ve a large garden, greenhouse, veg beds and plenty of plants both in the ground and in pots. Don’t water the grass but plants get regular water, I dread to think how much money there is in these plants, a rose bush is around £30 and we’ve over 50, plus many many other plants, there’s no way I’m not watering.

Tessasanderson · 12/08/2022 10:10

No real issue where i live. Even in drought times, we always get above national average of rain. Used the final drips from the waterbutt last night and it looks like there is a hot weekend coming. No issue, rain forecast for next week and i am going to pick up a second butt later today.

I have a hosepie but it feels wrong to use it tbh.

Yes but surely you understand that it's not bonkers if you grow fruit and vegetables and they'd die otherwise due to there being no rain?

Having sprinklers permanently on grass is a completely different thing - they should be banned IMO, but not using a hose. If I can't use the hose then I have to lug watering cans of water up and down the garden which still uses the water but is a huge increase in work with no point to it.
