Don't even have a hosepipe!

Is it normal to have them?

OP posts:
tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 12/08/2022 10:12

I've a garden too OP and no hosepipe.

Watering can which I'm currently filling with used dishwater from the bowl (Ecover washing up liquid) and my pots and some planted bits aren't doing too badly. We do have lots of shade which is helping.

But yes, grass is pretty much bleached Confused

I have lived in houses where I had a hosepipe and lived in houses where I didn't. My last garden was courtyard sized and I could water the plants with a watering can. This garden is bigger than a tennis court, I have a hosepipe not to water the plants because I can do that with grey water but to clean out the chickens' garden and keep their space clean.

Aaahhh chickens! I'm very jealous Grin

CrunchyCarrot · 12/08/2022 10:17

I have one, I need it to water my container plants that are on different levels, as my garden's on a hill slope. I'm disabled, so carrying a watering can more than a short distance is just not possible, so I rely on the hosepipe. I've decided that if we do get a ban here (nothing on the horizon yet, but that could change) then I'll move the hanging baskets and anything that's portable to lower levels near the house, the rest will just have to dry out and take their chances, I guess.

SamMil · 12/08/2022 10:23

I think most gardens have a hosepipe. I use mine to water things growing in the garden and polytunnel and give water to my animals outside.

Gruffling · 12/08/2022 10:26

I think a ban on domestic pressure washing would be fairer. They use huge amounts of water and are often used for unessential things like washing patios, drives and cars.

I think using a hose to water a vegetable garden or fill a small paddling pool is more justified and it's a shame to have a blanket ban.

vodkaredbullgirl · 12/08/2022 10:31

Yes I've got an outside tap and a hose, don't use the hose much. Use the tap to fill watering can up to water my veg and hanging baskets.

Gruffling · 12/08/2022 10:32

Although we don't have a ban here yet, I have moved all my pots into the shade by the house for the next few days as that will save some water and also save me time on watering.

I do have a water butt but it has run out!

It occurs to me that a hosepipe ban favours those with time and physical ability to water plants by hand.

onlythreenow · 12/08/2022 10:54

I don't know anyone who doesn't have one. I have one and the only plants I have now are in pots on the terrace.

onlythreenow · 12/08/2022 10:56

Incidentally, I'm not in the UK and we just call them hoses here!

I’ve only ever called them hoses too. And I’m in the UK (and British).

The hosepipe thing is something I only ever hear as part of the phrase ‘hosepipe ban’.

Samcro · 12/08/2022 11:29

have a garden, no hosepipe. do have 2 water butts.

BMW6 · 12/08/2022 12:08

I have a water butt, all the water has been used now. Also have watering can, outside tap, and hosepipe (banned here for drought).

I have lots of veg growing in pots, so am watering with grey water whenever possible.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 12/08/2022 12:22

I use mine to water fruit, veg and any plants that are struggling with the heat. The lawn can bake, i dont care.

Theres no ban here, but if there was, I'd still be using the hose for the edible stuff.

I'm going to have to investigate multiple BIG water butts if this is how summers are going to go.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 12/08/2022 12:23

Oh, and I use it for the chickens' washing up; their feeders and waterers don't come in the house.

hugoagogo · 12/08/2022 08:18

Seems bonkers to pour tap water outside in large quantities?
I suppose if lots of people are doing it, then banning them might make a difference.

well the sensible thing to do is have water butts on your down pipes and use that for the garden but I suspect they dried up a while ago!

RuthW · 12/08/2022 12:24

I have had a house 33 years and never owned a hosepipe

Most people with gardens have a tap outside...

womaninatightspot · 12/08/2022 12:27

I don’t and I have a big garden. Scotland though so it’s rare that stuff needs watered and I have multiple water butts so not lugging water far.

I pressure wash the car at one of those £1 for three minutes and work fast.

I have four..... they ran out in May!

FatBettyintheCoop · 12/08/2022 13:14

Yes, several outdoor taps and hosepipes, a massive garden and a 30ft Polytunnel.

Plus it's been raining a lot here this summer so no chance of a hospice ban where I live.

FatBettyintheCoop · 12/08/2022 13:15

Hospice? What a weird autocorrect? 😂

countrygirl99 · 12/08/2022 13:18

I use mine to cool down the horse in this weather.

We have an outside tap and a large garden and I water plants that grow food.

Well, now is probably not the best time to go out and buy one.,

Ours has a leak somewhere in the middle and is useless-I was thinking now would be an excellent time to buy a new one (but not use obviously). Hopefully they'll be cheap! 🤣

Shade17 · 12/08/2022 17:18

Yes, completely normal. I’ve got cold taps front and rear and bizarrely a hot one at the rear as well.
