Middle class life

Not one of those goady or provocative titles. I suppose I see Mumsnet in this bracket although perhaps less so than maybe ten years ago.

I’m just thinking things like Downton Abbey, John Lewis, national trust memberships, NCT classes, Volvos, Labradors.

What else?

Yes- because where I am (and probably in other parts of the UK), people label anyone based on where they were born/ ethnicity and it is irrelevant what their social background was in the country they left. They are still seen as non Irish/ northern Irish.

So the answer to PP’s question about that is “all migrants are in the sane category”?

HinchcliffeandMurgatroyd · 13/08/2022 16:47

Same^ category

Janedoe82 · 13/08/2022 16:48

Sleepingstandingup- was more the hair and makeup and high definition eyebrows- as I said- different social codes!!!

SleepingStandingUp · 13/08/2022 16:49

I think for immigrants, its quickly sliced into where you live and what you do. Our surgeon would be middle class and our dinner lady working class. Regardless of their background in India. If the dinner lasy sorts out her qualifications and gets a job as a microbiologist and buys a house in a nice area, she'll be assumed to be middle class

Janedoe82 · 13/08/2022 16:50

HinchcliffeandMurgatroyd in Northern Ireland essentially yes. There aren’t many migrants. It’s a different culture to London or more diverse places.

Perhaps the people judging her should spend less time in strip joints and they'd see that style is much more mainstream.

Janedoe82 · 13/08/2022 16:52

SleepingStandingUp Yes but not mainstream amongst the privately educated, private school mummies in Edinburgh!

palygold · 13/08/2022 17:02

I agree with your previous post that it's not necessarily about money.

Sleepingstandingup- was more the hair and makeup and high definition eyebrows- as I said- different social codes!!!

I think it's more nuanced than that. They're not representative of all working classes who they also might not fit in with, and to be fair the botox laminated brows, especially those subtly done (from wc to uc), transcend the classes.

In my opinion working classes and lower middles, etc, adapt just fine to standard private school environment. There's always someone with more money, a bigger house, and a more impressive ancestry after all.

Not really an excuse for be ignorant and ill mannered is it.

Janedoe82 · 13/08/2022 17:15

No- of course they were being snobby!

Obviously no body is openly rude, but there were obviously cliques that tended to form along social class lines.

mathanxiety · 13/08/2022 18:09

@Janedoe82 I agree it's all about codes.

My dad would have slotted straight into UMC Britain (and in fact he did, in the RAF).

I also agree that the codes exclude many people who would be considered UMC or solidly MC in their countries of origin. Irish, Indian, people from various other European, African and Asian countries have their own codes which don't always translate. My mum wouldn't have slotted straight into UMC Britain. She would be in the category of 'almost but not quite'.

My own (American) DCs are probably part of the tech/professional class mentioned by a PP, as are my British cousins on my mum's side. It's a more established class in the US than it is in the UK, more global in outlook.

OP- what's middle class about an NCT class?

Same1977 · 13/08/2022 18:17

Buythebag40 · 11/08/2022 22:37

People who must arrive at work/gym/school gates with a Starbucks in hand

See that's sooo ten years ago and erm...chavvy (sorry!)

And Volvo's? Who the fuck drives a volvo nowadays? I live in one of the most MC places ever and don't think I know anyone with a volvo! Every Tom, dick n Harry has a Tesla now. Im always nearly being run over by ghostly silent Tesla's!

I live in a nice area and so many Volvos around.Go to Henley ,plenty of Volvos rhere

Well this is the way I was brought up.

By my working class parents.

👏👏👏👏 I hate this self gratulatory bollocks - nothing so smug as the middle classes - usually the aspiring type, low income but clinging on to the label.

Janedoe82 · 13/08/2022 19:44

NCT is not about the cost- it is all to do with natural childbirth and breast feeding. Also very middle class.

palygold · 13/08/2022 20:09

It's not just about income, not at all. You can be upper class and penniless.

Its bloody expensive if you're on a low income. And lots of wc women breast feed. I had an EMC, they forgot to check my class before whipping him out.

Janedoe82 · 13/08/2022 21:10

A minority of working class women breastfeed- that is statistical correct. I deal with it my job- in disadvantaged areas the rates are only about 15% as opposed to about 85% in well off areas.
Can’t remember the stats but less well off women more likely to not have a non assisted delivery. Babies also more likely to have a lower birth weight.

gatehouseoffleet · 13/08/2022 21:27

CuriousCatfish · 13/08/2022 16:18

Perhaps the drug dealing WC don't care about the code.

I thought it was middle class professionals who were the drug dealers these days. That's if we are going to perpetuate these ridiculous stereotypes.

gatehouseoffleet · 13/08/2022 21:32

I disagree that people from overseas can't "slot in". Actually they slot in much better because they can't be stereotyped based on their accents or what schools they went to. Only by how much money they have, or their parents had. I suppose people might try to pigeon hole them based on their British partner's job or background, but they can't do that if they are both from overseas.

whalleyt · 13/08/2022 21:45

@Janedoe82 where do you live? not London obvs!

Janedoe82 · 13/08/2022 22:41

I said above I lived in Northern Ireland! It is nothing like London.

Lykia · 13/08/2022 23:40

What are the codes? Please don't say if you know you know. I'm not MC and I'm just curious what they are.

Janedoe82 · 13/08/2022 23:43

Codes are just cultural signifiers/ sub cultures. Common things that group people together.
