People of the South West, how do you pronounce...

... Tintinhull? Only I drive past it multiple times a year and tell myself every time that there must be some random pronunciation because I'll bet it isn't Tintin-hull. But I forget about it by the time I'm home.

I'm going for something like Tintinell?

Tintinull. Like there's no h. Almost like tintinall.

onthinice · 08/08/2022 12:19

I have never heard of it or seen any signs and lived in South West for 38 years, so perhaps it's not in my part of the region. However I would pronounce it tintinull.

Gemzee · 08/08/2022 12:34

Also never heard of it & lived in South West all my life (39 years) bar 2yrs in Oz. Would also say Tintinull.

Herbie0987 · 08/08/2022 12:46

Tintnull is how we pronounce it

stuffnthings · 08/08/2022 12:59

Confirmed as above; Tintnull.

Surplus2requirements · 08/08/2022 13:03

But it isn’t! The way it’s written is Tin-tin-hull. We’re now being told it’s pronounced Tint-null. That’s an i and an h which are silent, apparently.

TheStarsDontShine · 08/08/2022 21:33

It's tintnull

You have to allow locals their little pleasures.

I now live near Gloster and Cheltnum 😋

Badger1970 · 08/08/2022 21:41

I live in between Gloster and Cheltnum too Grin

And have spent most of my life trying to refine my accent and stop rolling my r's like a yokel.

APurpleSquirrel · 08/08/2022 21:47

I live the SW & have also wondered about how to pronounce Tintinhull. So thank you!
I'm not from the SW originally but am married to one. We regularly disagree about how to pronounce things - personal favourite is: Carhampton
I say it as Car-hamp-ton.
Locally it's apparently pronounced as:
Cramp-ton. Confused

maddiemookins16mum · 08/08/2022 21:59

What about Wymondham?? I was speaking to a customer from there today and they were shocked I got it correct!!!!!

dubyalass · 08/08/2022 22:52

Any guesses for Broadwoodwidger while we're at it? I often drive past the sign on the A30 and ponder its pronunciation.

Broadwooidger? Browdger? Or do you enunciate every syllable?
