You’re making a birthday card for someone with their young baby (who doesn’t speak yet so can’t give their opinions!)

The mum is American so uses Mommy
They live in a country where it is Mør
The person making the card and child’s father is English (and he would write mum) so use Mummy

How would you address the card?

there’s a pack of salted liquorice in it for anyone who votes my way (which is really a punishment because it’s grim)

I love liquorice, it’s extremely delicious. But salted!? Absolutely the fuck not!

Mommy

We have salt licorice in powder form here in Sweden. It's like sherbet's evil twin.

CharlotteSt · 06/08/2022 22:37

I'm in south east England. I work in probate and messages from our South African receptionist often say things like "please call Mr X whose mom has just died". I don't know why it winds me up but it does (possibly because I think it should in this context be "mother"?).

SisyphusDad · 06/08/2022 22:39

If you think that's the world's stupidist debate you haven't just been listening to my two teenage DSs arguing about how much the 43 people who populate the United States (apparently one per state plus two in Wisconsin), less the one who was eaten by an alligator and the two eaten by bears, generate in GDP in Venezuelan Bolivars per person per second, inflation and exchange rate adjusted for the period 2008 to 2015, assuming that half of said population is Barack Obama and the other half is some super athlete who I've never heard of.

yonce · 06/08/2022 22:40

I'm part scandi so it comes from my childhood 😂 it's just so good!! The dipping powder 🤤

Mistymountain · 06/08/2022 22:41

I would go with mommy, mother's choice is trumps

TeeBee · 06/08/2022 22:43

How about do a collage on the front with all the various words for mother?

Redshoeblueshoe · 06/08/2022 22:43

Well who cares about the card I'm here for the salted liquorice
I get it from Ikea - now tell me about the dipping powder

Madame Cholet

Mommy as that's what she'll be called by the child when it grows up

ElegantlyTouched · 06/08/2022 22:50

Different coloured pens and sort of do Mom but something like:

M and last n of the second m black
u red
rest of the o blue
line through o and first r of second m green

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 06/08/2022 22:14

Card is from child to mum, she’s never actually expressed an actual desire in what to be called just once said “it’s funny, I’m obviously Mommy but DH calls me mummy and the HV called me Mør”

There you are then, it's Mommy.

If she grows up and picks something else, fine. Until then, she goes with the Black Country version - Mommy

This is honestly one of the most confusing things I’ve read this week 🙃

Don’t use mommy! It’s too Pamela Anderson for words. No.

I advise against visiting the Black Country

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 06/08/2022 22:58

We’re going for Mommy because I’m always right

Appreciate all the help but am Very concerned about how many of you enjoy salted liquorice. Is this a cry for help?? Blink twice if you need rescuing

Mommy

Now send me the salted liquorice please.

GrouchyKiwi · 06/08/2022 22:59

Dammit. Answered too late.

Send me the liquorice anyway?

They sell it in ikea?? How did I not know this? I LOVE salted liquorice ❤️

NiqueNique · 06/08/2022 23:08

Dane here! 🇩🇰🇩🇰🇩🇰 Salty liquorice is one of my favourite things!

I think Mommy was the best option —even though mum is actually right— so yes @IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece you were right!

But...there’s nowhere in Scandinavia where mum is mør... Confused

NiqueNique · 06/08/2022 23:10

@weshouldeatcake Sadly the liquorice available in IKEA isn’t great. But it’ll do in a pinch. However, have a look at ScandiKitchen.co.uk as they have a great selection!

WinterMusings · 06/08/2022 23:12

English Liquorice salted is good!

the stuff from
Holland is Evil.

When I was 14/15 I spent a year trying to learn to like it because my friend was sad no one did. She was homesick for her old friends (her & her family had just arrived in NZ from Holland) but I couldn't, it was vile, she offered to let me try some her Grandad had just sent her, it was seriously BAD. She said they have different strengths/types....

i had to tell her at that point that I really really couldn't learn to love it, she'd have to learn to love our black & reds!!

that's now almost (gasp!!) 40 years ago & I don't recall trying it since!

Mommy.

NiqueNique · 06/08/2022 23:32

Ohhhh the liquorice powder. SO GOOD!! I haven’t had that in over 25 years...

Muat go home soon.

Please, please come back to explain this. I've been trying to figure it out all night and have got as far as thinking the 'n' in mom must be one of the arches of the 'm'. Is that right?

NiqueNique · 07/08/2022 10:42

@CircleofWillis that's how I read it.
