Is it weird to ask for ice cream cones to be put in a paper bag?

Treated my DD to ice cream tonight and the girl behind the counter looked at me like I had two heads when I asked if she could wrap them up for me.

When we used to get ice cream cones they were always wrapped up in thin greaseproof type paper and put in a bag so you could take them home- is this not done any more?

The question is if you can afford the difference, why would anyone choose a single nougat when you could have a double nougat? The nougats are so good, much nicer than a little scrap of wafer.

Ooh interesting. I don't like the nougat marshmallowy ones. Just plain for me top and bottom, thanks. (If they ever do a gluten free one that is)

Bimblybomeyelash · 07/08/2022 10:51

Not heard of a wrapped cone. But only the other day I was reminiscing about the blocks of ice cream you used to get, to be sliced up to make ice cream sandwiches.

Bunce1 · 07/08/2022 10:55

Omg the square cones! So good.

we did this and we also did the scoops into a bowl for our crumble after the roast on a Sunday.

very thin greasproof paper around a shell or a wafer thing. And cones in a paper bag. Normal. Ayrshire here.

also the strawberry sauce- yum! Really thin/watery but really tart!

Would last approx 10 seconds in this heat?!

The icecream van that came around the streets didnt always come at the time you wanted icecream so you would ask for your icecream cone, wafer, nougat or oyster in a paper bag to put in the freezer for later.

There's a time of the day when people don't want ice cream!? I can't conceive of such a thing...

The ice cream van came round our culdesac rain or shine everyday Around 4-6pm. The ice cream van was not predicated on warm weather.

same for an Cone when out on a day trip. If we only every took day trips when it was hot and sunny in Ayrshire we would have been hermits!

Never heard of that

ChopsyDoesntDoFungus · 07/08/2022 11:25

Sometimes it’s just too difficult to fit a double nougat in the mouth 😂 ohhhh unless you lick most of the ice cream from round the edge, squeesh it down a wee bit more, lick more of the ice cream, and keep going like that ‘til it’s just the two nougats with a tiny scraping of ice cream in the centre (my mum wouldn’t let us have the double, too much sugar) @AllPlayedOut

ChopsyDoesntDoFungus · 07/08/2022 11:26

i think it’s more of a thing with ice cream from the chip shop and I don’t think that’s a thing south of the border??

I've attached a picture of a single nougat. For bonus points it is sitting on the greaseproof wrapper. If you've never had one, the nougat part is a rectangle of wafer, covered in a coconut flavoured marshmallow, topped with another waver and surrounded by chocolate. A single nougat has ice cream then a plain wafer on top. A double nougat has another nougat on top. So good. (Picture from pintrest.)

With raspberry (sauce).

The best bit.

I wonder if it's a Scottish thing.

No, the full cone would be wrapped in the thin paper and put in a paper bag.

Yes we used to do that! Go to the swimming, then the cafe across the road for ice creams, eat them when we got home.

Maybe it was a Scottish thing!

MacKenzieMcHale · 07/08/2022 12:02

Not with cones right enough - a slider or an oyster.

The marshmallow inside is coconut flavoured? I've never noticed that. It just tastes to me like the inside of a Tunnock's Teacake or Snowball. Have I been going to the wrong ice cream places?

Same. It tastes just like a snowball to me.

Which has me thinking. We also used to sell a 'snowball' when I worked on the van. A white plastic cup with a snowball squashed into the bottom, with one or two scoops of ice cream on the top. Served with sauce of choice or even a flake. The mallow cream in the snowball would go all thick and chewy because of the cold from the ice cream. Yummy.

Wouldn't it be easier to have your ice cream in the little tubs with the spoon if you want to transport them? If the tub was big enough they could pop a lid on it .

When I was a child we didn't have a freezer and I can remember us waiting for the ice cream van to come down the street for mum to nip out and get a block of ice cream to go on our apple pie on Sunday .

TheDuckSaysMoo · 07/08/2022 12:35

@AllPlayedOut I think there's a hint of coconut in there. It's not plain like a tunnocks. It might just be my weird taste buds though 😀

CrappyJob · 07/08/2022 12:41

I don't think it's Scottish, but it's entirely possible it's regional - like forfar Bridies or salt n sauce.

Never heard of it, but I think it's a great idea.

Ice cream doesn't taste anywhere as near as good out of tub.

Same way a bag of chips tastes better wrapped in newspapers standing outside the chippy in the cold.

MaChienEstUnDick · 07/08/2022 12:53

Oh i want an oyster so much now - they were a massive, massive win on the horses treat.

I used to go out to the van with a blue bowl that was all scratched in the inside to get ice cream for afters on a Sunday. HAD to be that bowl.

Wbeezer · 07/08/2022 13:04

To those asking why drive to buy an ice cream, the kind of ice-cream you get from an Italian chip shop is special, its dense, white and milky, not overly vanilla, its worth making a special trip for.
DH works near one such popular cafe, he once employed some French interns who were very shocked that Scottish people will queue up for ice creams even when it was damp and chilly, they had never seen the like! We tried to tell them we'd seen people with ice cream cones when it was snowy but they didn't believe us!
I want one now!

QueenOfRap · 07/08/2022 13:09

I grew up in Ayrshire in the 1980’s and when buying a cone it was the routine to be asked “Are you eating this now or do you want it wrapped?”.

Arenanewbie · 07/08/2022 13:17

Never heard of this (and I visit ice cream places a lot). Our local Italian does plastic containers to take home.

I want ice cream now, my plans of cooking and ironing are probably ruined. I won’t be able to get myself together.

You try eating an ice-cream while eating a plate of mince and tatties! 😉🍦
