Is it weird to ask for ice cream cones to be put in a paper bag?

Treated my DD to ice cream tonight and the girl behind the counter looked at me like I had two heads when I asked if she could wrap them up for me.

When we used to get ice cream cones they were always wrapped up in thin greaseproof type paper and put in a bag so you could take them home- is this not done any more?

My dad used to do this, he'd go to the local family owned ice cream shop and bring them home wrapped in greaseproof paper. I knew exactly what you meant when reading your post! I am from Northern Ireland, not sure if it happened throughout NI, but the ice cream shop in our town would have done it.

Scottish. Worked on ice cream van in Glasgow late 70's/early 80's.
Was def a thing. Although we didn't have bags but would wrap in grease proof paper.

Justmuddlingalong · 06/08/2022 22:30

Scottish here, cones were wrapped in a sheet of greaseproof paper but never seen them put in a bag. Or we were sent out to the ice cream van with a pyrex bowl for however many scoops of ice cream for pudding on a Sunday, (to be enjoyed with tinned mixed fruit).

Never seen ice cream cones put in a bag to carry home in Scotland or England! Surely if it’s such a short walk they wouldn’t melt they could just be carried?

maddiemookins16mum · 06/08/2022 22:36

The only time I’ve known this is when you get a square block (individual) wrapped in the paper and the square ‘cones’.

Scottish here too, south west so not as far up as Ayrshire. Local Italian ice cream shop has been run by the same family since the 1930's. Only sell one "flavour" - plain ice cream. It's not really vanilla more like what they'd call Fior De Latte in Italy. Absolutely delicious! My favourite has always been a nougat wafer which would always be wrapped and handed to you in a thin piece of grease proof paper. If my dad went to get us an ice cream for a treat after tea they would wrap the ice cream cones around the ice cream with the grease proof paper and then maybe lie them flat in a white paper bag to be carried home. The ice cream is more like gelato and doesn't really drip/melt like a Cornish ice cream does. Ice cream isn't just for nice sunny days up here so not uncommon to take an ice cream home rather than walking around with it on a cold, dark evening.
Making me hungry just thinking about it!

So many questions......
Why would you drive such a short drive to get something? (just walk if its that close surely)
Why eat ice cream in a car? (eat it outside admiring a lovely view........ hopefully a lovely view)
Why go out to get it, then take it home? (again see above re outside and lovely view)
Ice cream doesnt get drippy if you eat it just after you've bought it......... admiring the aforementioned lovely view ideally.

Wafflesnsniffles · 06/08/2022 22:40

And ok so I kinda get the point re it being Scotland.......... but I still would just y'know........ walk to get it.........then eat it.

Wafflesnsniffles · 06/08/2022 22:40

Or make it at home which is what we usually do. :)

Like the ones in the top right hand corner on this sign.

candlecandleburnonbright · 06/08/2022 22:45

Yes, not just a hot day thing, a wee treat to have at home or on the way home.

It was always more expensive to sit down and have it in glass- that was a Big Big Treat- so you'd usually sit in the car or take it home.

We also had a wee house and a big family, so the car was a more private place. Even my own teenagers always seem more open about things in the car. We usually have great chats over cones and McDs in the car.

I’m in Northern Ireland and the ice cream van (proper ice cream not whippy) that used to come to our village did this - thin grease proof paper wrapped around the cone.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/08/2022 22:46

I guess it's so cold in Scotland it wouldn't melt. Wink

I grew up in Ayrshire. Lots of family in Tarbolton. The town (village?) used to have a "Tally's" which was run by an Italian family. They sold glass bottles of pop (god I miss proper Red Cola!), cigarettes (in singles if you asked....) and a few other bits, but also home made ice cream.

You could get it wrapped up, especially things like an ice cream sandwich, but also the cones. We'd buy a dozen for family gatherings and have to walk home with them, so this was how you did it!

@GetOffTheRoof w where my Mum comes from and her family still live there. Been in the Tally’s a lot with my cousins buying sweets as a kid. My dad was from Drongan.

SaharaSahara · 06/08/2022 22:49

I’m Scottish, live in Scotland and NO never seen this or heard this. I can understand the wrap in thin paper part but the putting in a bag really had my mouth drop.

BashfulClam · 06/08/2022 22:49

@GetOffTheRoof its definitely still a village though. I bet our families gave crossed paths in Turbowtin.

R00tat00tt00t · 06/08/2022 22:49

@Wafflesnsniffles The type of ice cream OP is talking about can't be made at home. It's made fresh daily at ice cream shop and doesn't really freeze well - gets too icy -so can't be bought in a tub and frozen for later. No shop bought frozen ice cream I've had has ever come close and I've eaten a lot of ice cream Smile

candlecandleburnonbright · 06/08/2022 22:51

When I say bag, I mean thin paper bag- a bit like the type you get in Gregg's or bakeries for cakes.

Bizarre

TheDuckSaysMoo · 06/08/2022 22:52

Glaswegian here. Totally normal and we just did this the other day in Giffnock. Two single nuggets and two 99s wrapped to take home. Popped into the freezer and eaten after dinner.

TheDuckSaysMoo · 06/08/2022 22:55

...and the server didn't bat an eye. Totally normal request.

SaharaSahara · 06/08/2022 23:02

Wow @TheDuckSaysMoo how come I’ve never seen this, I’ve used so many ice cream vans in parks etc

MadeinBelfast · 06/08/2022 23:09

Another one from NI, I'd say it was quite common here but I do eat a lot of ice cream!

KenAddams · 06/08/2022 23:27

candlecandleburnonbright · 06/08/2022 21:37

Is the poke not the cone? My granda would call it a pokey hat!

Is a pokey hat not a poke of chips 😂

SaharaSahara · 06/08/2022 23:02

I wouldn't really expect it at a static van in a park. I think of them as more immediate or spur of the moment purchases. I would expect it in a shop or a van that drives around the streets.

There was a lovely memory in one if the posts above about taking a bowl out to the van to buy single scoops. That was a major treat.
