Is it weird to ask for ice cream cones to be put in a paper bag?

Treated my DD to ice cream tonight and the girl behind the counter looked at me like I had two heads when I asked if she could wrap them up for me.

When we used to get ice cream cones they were always wrapped up in thin greaseproof type paper and put in a bag so you could take them home- is this not done any more?

I'm assuming this is actual ice cream and not a Mr whippy?

I really cannot see any way you could safely transport a MR whippy rolled up and put in a bag without the top falling off?

I struggle to eat them without losing the top Grin

womaninatightspot · 06/08/2022 21:03

Never seen or heard of this and I’m Scottish.

vipersnest1 · 06/08/2022 21:05

I'm thinking along the same lines as @itsgettingweird. Mr Whippy style ice cream might survive, but whipped ice cream would not.

vipersnest1 · 06/08/2022 21:05

Oh bigger, scooped ice cream might survive....

candlecandleburnonbright · 06/08/2022 21:06

No, no, not Mr Whippy type. Proper old school Coia's Cafe type ice cream.

YES! I am not alone Grin

I grew up in Ayrshire. Lots of family in Tarbolton. The town (village?) used to have a "Tally's" which was run by an Italian family. They sold glass bottles of pop (god I miss proper Red Cola!), cigarettes (in singles if you asked....) and a few other bits, but also home made ice cream.

You could get it wrapped up, especially things like an ice cream sandwich, but also the cones. We'd buy a dozen for family gatherings and have to walk home with them, so this was how you did it!

PuttingDownRoots · 06/08/2022 21:08

Ice cream cones are immediate items.

Although sometimes if we all don't fancy going to the ice cream shop (2mins walk away) someone might bring home a cup with a couple of scoops.

LadyMcLadyface · 06/08/2022 21:08

Scot here, I used to work in an ice cream shop and some people would ask for the cones to be wrapped up - bit of greaseproof paper over the ice cream then carefully placed in a paper bag.

Wbeezer · 06/08/2022 21:11

Thin greaseproof paper paper round a nougat wafer yes but not a cone.

candlecandleburnonbright · 06/08/2022 21:14

I have scoured the internet Grin credit to the University Cafe Glasgow's facebook page.

This man has a cone wrapped in the greaseproof.

When I was a kid we used something like this (with the sticks / holders removed) to carry comes back for anyone who didn’t come in the car to the ice cream shop for whatever reason.

Never heard of that either!

Wheest1 · 06/08/2022 21:29

Yes, I remember this too, from a great Italian ice cream shop in Saltcoats or Ardrossan, so maybe it is a Scottish thing. We sat outside in the car, dad would get the order in for us all.Delicious

Wheest1 · 06/08/2022 21:34

Though it was in a poke🤣

candlecandleburnonbright · 06/08/2022 21:37

Is the poke not the cone? My granda would call it a pokey hat!

Yes, you could also go 'a wee run' to get a cone in the car, usually at the weekend or as a massive treat midweek.

No a poke is a paper bag. Like a pig in a poke. Or a poke of sweets.

SavingsThreads · 06/08/2022 21:45

And he's holding it upside down?! This is madness!

ShrillSiren22 · 06/08/2022 21:46

I worked in an ice cream shop for years and never had anyone ask for it wrapped up. Do you mean each individual cone wrapped up sort of like a cone of chips and then put in a bigger bag? I can’t imagine how more than one cone could be wrapped together without it ending in a mixed up flavoured, soggy coned mess.

MarthaMayWhovier · 06/08/2022 22:00

I think I've had an ice cream in a paper bag before in my childhood. It's definitely not something you see often.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 06/08/2022 22:00

Are you confusing them with fish and chips?

Are you confusing them with fish and chips?

No. Look at the picture.

Usually one cone wrapped at a time, maybe two per paper bag.

No Confused
How can you carry an ice cream cone in a bag?

Longlostfamilial · 06/08/2022 22:14

I’m Scottish but highland, although university in Glasgow and this doesn’t ring any bells at all. Maybe a specifically Ayrshire thing? Our university flat was above an Italian ice cream/chip shop but still no recollection of this at all (early 80s).

WoodlandWalks123 · 06/08/2022 22:16

DH is Italian and says this is a thing in Italy. I’ve never in my life seen it here though.
