I'm petrified of oceans and seas - deep waters in general. But I'm also completely obsessed with it too; I'll watch anything to do with marine life, oceans, sharks (😱) even though it scares the shit out of me. I live on the coast and love it, but jeez-oh it scares me.

What about you?

Plane crashes.

I'm a very nervous flyer because of the fear of a crash. The thought makes me feel sick to my stomach - I can vividly imagine the feeling of being completely helpless, knowing it's the end, unable to stop it. It must be a terrible way to go.

But I have a totally morbid fascination with documentaries, films, dramatisations of crashes. If I see one when channel surfing, I put it on. Ridiculous and probably very unhealthy for me considering I'm terrified already.

Mr.s Brown's Boys. Complete train wreck. I watch it in horror and wonder how the hell that got commissioned.

Southwestten · 06/08/2022 14:31

The Strid, Bolton Abbey

Oddly, I’m drawn to terrifying survival stories, bear attacks, people being stranded in remote locations and having to survive in extreme conditions. I loved ‘The Revenant’ and ‘Blackwood Trail’ and ‘Grizzly Man’ for that reason.

Yes to terrifying survival stories. I went down an internet rabbit hole reading about the wreck of the Medusa....😦

UseOfWeapons · 06/08/2022 14:36

Sinkholes.
Extreme breastfeeding….when the child is 8

Silkierabbit · 06/08/2022 14:36

My cancer. I have it and it terrifies me at times but also fascinated by the research, different types of chemo, side effect of drugs, radiotherapy and want to know everything.

SouthernSarah · 06/08/2022 14:38

Afterlife/ghosts. Absolutely terrifies me but also intrigues me so much.

AuntMasha · 06/08/2022 14:38

Yes, it’s fascinating — recently listened to a podcast about the Medusa, and Theodore Gericault’s famous painting of it.

Do you remember the podcast? Sounds interesting.

Mount Everest and the casual attitude to the dead bodies left up there. It freaks me out even though I am fully aware that all I need to do to not die on Mount Everest is not to attempt to climb Mount Everest.

Also Jonestown and other similar cults.

Big cat sightings in the UK.. I believe in the sightings and I absolutely love big cats but oh my god what would I do If I ever saw one in the woods!
I'm a bit obsessed

Georgeskitchen · 06/08/2022 14:50

True crime documentaries, especially the count down to murder type . Very sad but fascinating at the same time x

MiauzenKatzenjammer · 06/08/2022 14:51

Tsunamis.

RhubarbFairy · 06/08/2022 14:55

Also re pylons as mentioned by PPs. I'm not fascinated by them but they freak me out. I once refused to even view a property as I could see from the picture that there was one almost in the back garden. No thank you.

Riverlee · 06/08/2022 14:56

True life situations when children are found several years later, sometimes decades later. Often they’ve been hidden in a basement if a normal suburban street.

@AuntMasha i linked to a really good bear attack film a few posts back called Back Country.

Although it feels odd to say a bear attack film is “really good” 😳

AuntMasha · 06/08/2022 15:24

Yes, GorgeousLadyofWrestling — it’s the same film — for some reason it was marketed in the UK as ‘Blackwood Trail’.

GorgeousLadyofWrestling · 06/08/2022 15:29

Ahhh cool! That bit where he thinks he’s found the lake they’ve been searching for!

elm26 · 06/08/2022 15:40

Serial killers and sharks (great whites in particular).

I've loved sharks since I can remember.

Yep this is me!! Terrified of Flying, but I enjoy going to different countries so I put up with the fear. Yet as soon as I've booked something I'll sit and watch episode after episode of Air-crash investigation to freak myself out even more.

Found it! m.imdb.com/title/tt2944198/

Im sure I’m coming across like such a weirdo. Whenever there’s a slight mention of an animal attack, DH is like 🙄🙄🙄

We were watching a surfing documentary and one competition was called off because a poor surfer ( not in the competition) was killed by a shark earlier in the day. It was so sad and horrifying but DH was also like “oh here we go…” and looking at me.

Thanks for the suggestion, that looks right up my street!

I've seen one. Sadly nobody believed me but I'm absolutely convinced.
