Self-conscious about saying certain words

user1490969170 · 03/08/2022 20:54

Does anyone else forget how to correctly pronouce a certain word repeatedly and then deliberately not use it out of fear of mispronouncing?

My word is placate. I always forget whether it is a hard C or an S sound, so I never use it even if I want to!

Aspartame. I always thought it was like hyperbole. But apparently not.

I thought there was aspartamine, which would be like hyperbole. But according to Google it's just aspartame 🤷‍♀️

If there was such a thing as 'aspartamine' it wouldn't be like hyperbole. It would be like amine, which is pronounced 'a mean'. Not to be confused with anime.Grin

There's asparagine (last syllable pronounced -"jean", not "jinny"; this is the amino acid in asparagus that makes some people's wee smell sulfurous). There's another amino acid called aspartate ("-tate", not "-tatty"). Amino acids are the units that proteins are made of.

Ignore the rest if you're not interested. Aspartame ("-tame", not "-tammy") is made up of two amino acids - phenylalanine (-"neen", not "ninny") and aspartate - with a methyl ester group stuck on the phenylalanine. Because excessive phenylalanine causes neurological problems in people with a rare inherited condition called phenylketonuria, products containing aspartame have to carry health warnings. You wouldn't naturally assume a soft drink would contain amino acids.
