Self-conscious about saying certain words

user1490969170 · 03/08/2022 20:54

Does anyone else forget how to correctly pronouce a certain word repeatedly and then deliberately not use it out of fear of mispronouncing?

My word is placate. I always forget whether it is a hard C or an S sound, so I never use it even if I want to!

Condoms - Comdons
Pheromones - pheronomes

These are not words I use often (if ever!) But I always get my m/n's mixed around 🤦

Exclaimed/exclamation
the excl part gets all mixed up in my mouth and comes out as etslamation. Sometimes even etstermation. I also find thr tricky, it comes out as thu-r as two separate syllables. So thurifty or theree.

Mind blown!!!

Wrath

Yes me too!

SunshineLoving · 03/08/2022 23:39

Yes! Not words I would use much at all anyway but I definitely wouldn't use them as I struggle so much to say them:
Philanthropist
Narrator
Almonds

I can't say nuclear. It always comes out new-queue -lar. I know it's wrong and I can say it in my head correctly but as soon as I open my mouth the wrong version comes out. Fortunately since I stopped working I don't have to say it very much but when I was at work I would get it wrong on at least a daily basis. Very embarrassing.

Morverner · 03/08/2022 23:57

Anything with r and w. No hope with lawyer, I can say it in my head, but not actually say it.
Chasms I only found out recently and thanks to a pp I've just found out about social mores (wtf!).

I have trouble pronouncing lots of words because my mother tongue is Spanish. "Fish and chips" gives me the most trouble as I catch myself saying, Fich and ships" to the amusement of my English husband.

"Mores" is one I've always said correctly. My husband, on the other hand, says it incorrectly and tries to correct me because, he speaks English. Grr. I know I am right, I studied Latin for four years in school. "Mor-" means "custom".

@ToooOldForThis

Basically it's, I COULD schedule but I SHOULD schedule. The second one is correct. So remember that instead of saying you can do it, you SHOULD do it, and that's more important (so it's the right pronunciation)

AtomicBlondeRose · 04/08/2022 09:13

Hegemony - and it comes up in a course I have to teach. Every time I look it up and every time I come away more confused and I never truly know what’s going to come out of my mouth until I say it.

Icecreamclassic · 04/08/2022 09:15

I can't say negligent and I work in a field where it's used a lot!

ArcheryAnnie · 04/08/2022 09:52

Another one for "hyperbole" here.

Also "misled".

Evivie · 04/08/2022 10:03

Innovative and, when I talk about my (quite annoying) FOMO to my DH it always comes out as MOFO which is something else altogether 🤐

This is a common one - seems to even fox some bbc folk - but what puzzles me is that there never seems to be an issue with 'nucleus'. So... would it help to start saying that and just change the ending? New Klee us, new Klee are.

I'm sure there are words I mispronounce and don't even realise. I mostly work with people in the US - I think I use shedule and skedule randomly but it doesn't matter - it's perfectly comprehensible either way.

PointersPlease · 04/08/2022 10:07

Aspartame. I always thought it was like hyperbole. But apparently not.

ErrolTheDragon · 04/08/2022 10:09

One which I'm never sure about is lichen. Is it liChen , litchen or liken.. or something else.

ToooOldForThis · 04/08/2022 13:55

@Borgonzola thank you! So it's shhhhedule as opposed to sKEdule!
