Stupidest bollockings you’ve had at work?

TimeAtTheBar · 03/08/2022 13:52

I got called into a meeting with my bosses boss yesterday to address a complaint from a member of my team that I had disappeared off for half an hour last weekend.

…I took just half an hour of my one hour paid break and left another manager in charge.

Apart from the fact I am SO DONE with this particular job, this could have easily been resolved without a face to face meeting which I found intimidating and overkill.

To make me feel better, tell me about your stupid or unfair bollockings please; because I am still raging about it a day later.

When I was still a fairly junior lawyer my utterly batshit and terrifying boss made me go to an event in her place. It was cricket at Edgbaston. our firm was hosting a number of guys from one of our main clients. She looked at the guest list and sneered that no one important enough was going so she sent me instead. I have no interest in cricket, was pregnant and couldn't even enjoy a pint and I was expected to make up the missing day of chargeable time later that month.

I went along, made the most of it, chatted to the client chaps. Ended up sitting next to one really nice older man who turned out to be the head of the department specialising in our field of work. We got on well and arranged (his suggestion) that he come and visit our office next week as he had a number of new matters he thought were suitable.

I told boss on Monday and she hit the roof almost spitting with rage. "If I'd known he was going to be there I would have gone myself. Don't you dare think you're getting any of this new work!!!"
I was astounded as was the young trainee solicitor I shared a room with and who witnessed it.

But then if your boss went instead, they could.of fluffed and not even made the arrangements, it was your doing and effort etc,

Was threatened with disciplinary proceedings for failing to call in sick for an 8am shift. This was even after I explained (at 10am) that my then 2 year old had been blue lighted to hospital during the night and was in PICU dangerously unwell.

Fuck you Jackie and fuck you RBS.

My horrible ex bully line manager would regularly find something to tell me off about.

I was to copy her into every email I wrote. I did. Then I was told off as it was too much.

She didnt like some of my expressions but then she used them.

I didnt know that a policy was published because she didnt tell me.

I wore my coat in a really cold meeting room even though I had explained to others.

That I tell her exactly what I was doing on my leave and only then would she consider my having time off. And only when I had finished everything (which was impossible).

That she didnt understand where my time was coming from when my DGM was very sick in hospital because I was leaving work at 2pm for two weeks. She knew I started work at 6.30am and didnt take a lunch break.

That I could not prioritise things, I had to do it all, all the time.

I hate that woman with every fiber of my being.

We had some sort of work being done on the building involving a crane. My manager comes over to me in a fury. To tell me it was not appropriate to be naked at work. That it was unprofessional and bad for the image of the company blah blah. At this point I was mainly confused and asking "why would I be naked?" Until she added that there is work being carried out on the building and to be aware that I was on full view to the workmen. Turns out the workmen were having a laugh and she took it seriously. I have no idea why she instantly decided the naked woman must be me. I never got an apology.

Taken into the office for spraying perfume. In the changing room.
Really.

Reminds me, I got bollocked for brushing my hair in the waiting room. Still no idea why?

Same boss was livid at me for coming in with a really shit cold, proper nasty crappy, felt like I needed my bed cold. Then she yelled at me some more for talking to other staff and telling them I was in with this shite cold because I needed the money and we didnt get sick pay. Apparently I should not have told them we didnt get sick pay. I mean was I supposed to lie?

Same boss but one of the last times I worked there told me in no uncertain terms to be sociable with another staff member who was constantly telling tales and trying her best to get me in trouble. I told boss that I was willing to be civil but I'd never be sociable with such a bitch. So when I was civil but not sociable I got told off yet again. So I left after putting in a huge complaint about her.

Terfydactyl · 05/08/2022 21:00

Oh God a pp has reminded me, same boss as above.
Got a huge bollocking and threatened with a disciplinary for either doing or not doing something (I forget which, it was a long time ago) I waited for the whole thing to have costed the company money and time doing interviews and stuff and then pointed out, I'd been off the whole week of the incident so no way could it possibly have been me.
Anne T I want you to know despite what you thought about yourself you were an epically shit boss.

I've made the critical error of following school policy far too many times.

In one school pupils were not permitted to wear coats in the building (dumbshit rule) and when my pupils entered my classroom, I politely asked them to remove their coats.
I ended up with an interrogation about the room temperature (cold, but not so cold that I hadn't mangaged to work my PPA in the room before hand). HoD went quiet when I pointed out that it was policy to remove coats.

In another, they were having a uniform crackdown. One pupil had tucked their jumper into their (prohibited) black jeans so I asked them to untuck it so it was less obvious that it was non uniform. I got a tirade which escalated the consequences. It then followed up with a parental complaint and investigation that I was bullying this pupil. HoD remembered a previous detention and my patience in dealing with the previous incident. My department was OK but it was a massive time waste that resulted in a meeting where I basically promised to treat them the way that I always had, rather than the way I always had 🙄

In yet another school, I confiscated a phone... parents came in to reception demanding the phone... reception hadn't got a clue... HoD comes in asking why I haven't handed the phone to reception... I point out that I'm still teaching the lesson having confiscated it 20 mins earlier and have been unable to leave the room to take it down. 🤦‍♀️
At least that time they worked out that the pupil had commited the double offence of using a friend's phone to contact their parent in the lesson and dealt with it.

If you ever fancy being belittled and treated like a disobedient child, I can recommend teaching 😂

So true! I'm not sure when parents/carers got so much power over the rules of a school!

ILoveTwix · 05/08/2022 21:46

Got called in to the Headteachers office and told off because the head of a very important department (think English/Maths/Science) hadn't done their examination entries so none of the pupils were registered for their exams. This was apparently my fault because I was their Head of Year and so should have checked this (absolutely no where in the job description or history of the role was this my responsibility!)

I left the meeting very confused and irate so went to speak to the examinations officer about it (whose job it is to request and submit entries to exam boards) to find out what had happened. Guess who line managed the examinations officer... yep, the Headteacher. Luckily for me there were many emails between the examinations officer and head of department with the headteacher cc'd in notifying them they hadn't submitted the pupils names to be entered for exams. The headteacher just hadn't bothered to read or follow up on this to support the examinations officer. It was a good day for me when I pointed out it was in fact her fault (the headteacher) since she line manages examination entries and not my fault at all. I left the term after that as I was so fed up of her awful management. The school is frequently in the media for being a shit show!

TravellingSpoon · 05/08/2022 23:24

Given a bollocking and a written warning by my line manager after my colleague and I politely refused to remove our shoes when visiting a customer's house. Customer is supported out if bed using a mobile hoist and both my colleague and I followed the companies H&S policy. When I pointed this out manager screamed that she knew that and I didnt need to tell her 🤔.

BootlegSprings · 06/08/2022 00:37

Mine is another 'wrong person' case. Who knew it was so common?!

We had an internal feedback reporting tool, to flag up errors that had been made or request call listening etc. These were all logged and noted in performance reviews.

One came through for me, via my line manager (who was supposed to review it first.) I sent it straight back, pointing out that the error in question was a) on a different service line to the one I worked and b) had occurred on my non-working day so was clearly not my error, and was in fact the notoriously shit colleague with the same first initial and surname.

My line manager seemed very put out that I expected him to do his job to challenge this and not have it on my record, like I was just sour at getting it. No, I'll always take genuine feedback and hold my hands up when I've made a mistake, but I'm not having other people's errors marked against me.

Adarajames · 06/08/2022 02:59

in hot weather recently I took ice creams around to the rest of my team, all working outside for long shifts at a busy festival. Got a call from the boss this week to say the client had complained that my taking ice creams to the team was ‘unreasonable’! 🤔 have to say, I just laughed my head off at my boss! Think they were just jealous they didn’t get any!

TimeAtTheBar · 06/08/2022 09:23

Oh god I’ve just remembered a wrong person one. Not a bollocking though.

I had a phone call from DHs work telling me he’d had a heart attack and was on his way to hospital. DH was then about 42, he’s very healthy in general. I was floored and panicked and had let his parents know and arranged a lift to the hospital….

Finally got hold of DH about half an hour later to find he was absolutely fine and it was someone with the same name who had the heart attack (fully recovered now btw).

It was the scariest half an hour. What a massive cock up!

I got told off by my boss (in front of a number of colleagues) in the staff room for wishing my colleague a Happy Birthday because I was divulging personal information 🙄

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 06/08/2022 11:15

A colleague (Dorothy) and I were berated in front of our team and our LM for ... Doing our job! We work at a jobcenter (not UK) and our clients are public sector workers. So when there was a boom of refugees and the council needed extra teachers, TAs and helpers we sent our clients' names to the colleague named. He complained that we had sent half of our case loads - well yes! The other half are sw, fysios and occupational therapists. I ended up saying in english so just to clarify your complaint is that we are doing our job? Ja. I looked at my LM who looked back at me, and I high fived Dorothy.

I should add that there was a birthday cake in the staff room (provided by the workplace for employees on their birthday) 😂

Notwiththebullshizz · 06/08/2022 15:31

Got taken in for a disciplinary by my department manager for calling a team manager an asshole outside of work. I was pregnant at the time and he kept making jokes like 'watch out, whale coming through' and 'keep your food safe everyone, porky is on duty today'... so I said, loudly and in front of other team members on this meal out, " a joke is funny the 1st time, the second time it's a little annoying but the 3rd time just makes you look like a complete asshole.

I dont think I said anything wrong, he was the one who was constantly saying weird things to me/about me while I was pregnant.

I explained this all to my department manager who told me 'perhaps you're a little sensitive because you're pregnant, either way, calling someone an asshole isnt acceptable'.

So I told her that we would have yo see what HR said about it instead and all of a sudden I was in fact, ok to say that as it was outside of work time.

People are idiots

Having hair too long two days after a haircut with the on-base barber.

Getting put on orders for not polishing the soles of my boots.

Thanks, and Fucketty bye, the army.

This reminded me of the time as an air cadet when I was bollocked on a training course (held at the local RAF base) because the WO doing room inspections had found dust on top of my wardrobe. The whole room was otherwise spotless after I got up two hours early to clean it, including using sellotape to get fluff off the carpet, and I was 5'2" 🙄 Petty adults on power trips are one of the reasons I will never let my DC join the cadets.

Thefruitbatdancer · 06/08/2022 16:52

I was called into a disciplinary meeting because the bosses protégé had fucked up. They decided that I should take the hit but before bitchy manager could have a rant, I calmly told her I quit. She was quite taken aback because she wasn't able to screech & go on a power trip.

Fast forward a few weeks after I left, bitchy boss and her protégé screamed at a new person. This man was from a different section who wandered into their dept for stationary.

Bitchy boss then finds out that the man she screamed at was the CEO's new deputy............protégé quit first followed by Bitchy boss 6 months later. Karma.

iklboo · 06/08/2022 17:51

Remembered another one. I had to book travel & accommodation for my line manager, on a weekly basis during the busy period. She phoned me at home on a Sunday screaming at me that I'd fucked up (her words) and the hotel had no record of her booking, she'd travelled three hours and had nowhere to stay, I was a fucking idiot, I was going to get sacked.

I was confused as I had double checked everything on the Friday before I left work. I asked her which hotel it was so I could call them myself to sort it out.

She says she's at Hotel X.

Ah, no, you're at Hotel Y this week, Hotel X is next week.

Why didn't you fucking tell me, was I stupid. I had emailed all the details to her.

'Well I don't read my emails all the time'

Same boss phoned & had a massive go at me because she didn't know where she was and asked me to direct her. I was in Manchester, she was in Belfast, I didn't know the city at all and it was the days before Google Maps.

'I'm facing a red brick wall'. Like that was going to help. I suggested she asked the hotel desk for directions.

'I don't want to bother them'.

Pretty much all the tram under her quit, I was pregnant & waiting to go on maternity leave. She didn't recruit my replacement until the week I was leaving no time for a proper handover.

Chunkytreetrunk · 06/08/2022 18:48

Knob of a manager told me off for missing work because I had a midwife appointment. Told me he would let it go this once but I wasn't to use that excuse again. Arsehole.

dubyalass · 06/08/2022 19:54

Bollocked by business owner for giving a week's notice at the end of my six-month probation period. Which she had imposed on me, rather than the three-month period everyone else was given, because she wasn't sure if I was right for the role. Apparently I was "leaving them in the lurch". This was for a £12k/year lowly assistant job. She was a vile old bitch, racist and snobby, and she also refused to pay my outstanding holiday, but the lovely accountant (who also hated her) added it to my final pay packet, presumably signed off by bitchface's husband, who was the opposite of her in every way - a kind, gentle, highly intelligent man who used to save newspaper clippings he thought I'd be interested in.

Crankley · 06/08/2022 20:15

Years ago I had an American boss. He had a foul temper and one time my secretary had mis-filed a document he wanted. He went ballistic and starting with the top filing cabinet drawer, pulled out all the files and threw them on the floor. I sat patiently at my desk. By the third drawer my office floor was covered with paper and he ran out of steam. He looked at me and said ' well someone had better clear up this fucking mess', I picked up my bag, walked out and never returned.

Silentwitless · 06/08/2022 20:27

I once had my bosses, bosses boss scream at me in a huge open plan office because I didn't put double spaces after my full stops in a document!

Ziggyisthebestdogintheworld · 06/08/2022 20:45

My manager messaged at half 6 this morning to ask if we had any fund raising ideas
half 6 in the morning…

I saw it at about half 10,as it’s my day off and I hadn’t checked for any messages

anyway,I sent back a few ideas but my colleague messaged the group chat to say that sometimes, when it’s busy,we just won’t have the time to do anything-which is fair enough (it’s the sort of job where you have to be spinning at least ten plates at any one time)

the main boss-who left a month ago-then jumped in,having a go at me-saying that I’ll just have to find the time cos ‘let’s face it-you don’t work that hard in the first place’ and then he left the chat (he’s a right micromanaging, nitpicking,‘perfect’ (in his head only) ,woman hating prat)

I’ve been bollocked for A-not doing my job properly (which I do-I’ve never had a complaint)B-I didn’t say that we might be a bit busy-that was my colleague and C-he’s not my manager anymore as he quit!

plus-whos awake at half 6 in the bloody morning-on a rare weekend off-on the bloody weekend?!

PeachyPeachTrees · 07/08/2022 21:43

In my freelancing days, I was working for a small company who didn't allow any staff to talk to each other at all. I got a bollocking for not doing something correctly but pointed out that this problem would have been completely avoided if I could have communicated with others.
