Things that make you realise you’re not the spring chicken you thought you were

I had a shock recently re-watching Mamma Mia, I always identified with Sophie’s character age-wise, but realise I am now Donna’s age, assuming Donna is in her early 40s..
Anyone else go straight from being in their twenties to their forties without noticing? I swear I’ve lost a whole decade somewhere!

I saw someone with that trendy grey/silver hair that young people have and she gave me the name of the salon she went to, so I booked to get the same. in excited anticipation I went on one of those apps where you can see what you’d look like with different hair colours. I picked the trendy silver. And looked like an old lady. Hairdresser did a balayage instead after she agreed that perhaps it’s a style for younger people who don’t WANT to look old Blush

Last year, when my brother said to me the culture of 80’s is as far away from us now, as WW2 was for us in the 80’s. Boom! Suddenly I was old.

When our youngest started primary school about 14 years ago I asked a young girl (who I assumed was helping out her mum on the open day) about the school trips. She told me all about her year 6 class she had taken to xyx the year before. I tried not to show my shock she was a qualified primary school teacher and shuffled my old dinosaur self away 😬😅

That makes me feel about 110 years old ☹

When I realized that the graduate trainees in my office were the same age as my children.

When I realised, listening to our new recruits in my CS dept that I was actually older than her grandmother. 😳

Kath Bush Running Up that Hill has had a revival due to Stranger Things. I spoke to a younger person about it and they were astonished to know it wasn't new.

I've got the original single on vinyl Grin

I started my career as a youth worker. I bumped into one of my 'kids' from back in the day. She is now a grandmother of three!!!

Another one - you go to the garden centre with your mum and both of you come out very happy with your clothing purchases.

I have also had this moment.

I think it was also a rite of passage for my mum. Grin

Joining a new gym recently, the (very) young man at the desk told me I would definitely get a good discount as I would qualify for the OAP discount... I am 45!!!

Losing my flat run to middle age spread

lissie123 · 03/08/2022 19:43

@elastamum yep I’m there too. Had lunch with one of my graduate trainees today and I was telling him about my DS whose the same age.

Nospringduck · 03/08/2022 20:06

When I feel all motherly towards the young lads at work. Then realise they are probably in their 30s.

Choosing "big pants" and comfy bras ( the kind that don't have any bits that dig in).

Realising that young adults today don't have the same fear of nuclear holocaust that we used to.

You could probably make your millions from that vinyl 😂

Squirrelsnut · 03/08/2022 20:11

Seeing very young trendsetters wearing 80s and 90s styles 'ironically' as a vintage statement piece blah blah.
I still have some of the original pieces in my cupboard.

I work in adult care with old people , when I first started work my oldest service users had date of births around the end of 1890s....1898/1899 etc. Obviously now the oldest were born around 1925/1930s.

We had a year in industry student last year. I remembered her being born - her older sister was in my son’s class.

MaChienEstUnDick · 03/08/2022 22:39

I've always liked a drink and am incredibly clumsy, with predictable results.

When you're young and you fall over, people laugh at you.
When you're my age and fall over, the whole pub goes 'ooooh', people rush over to help you, they get you glasses of water and ask if you need an ambulance.

@PenOrPencil my son's guidance teacher told me once that the only reason they're so strict on uniform for the older kids is so they can definitely tell them apart from the students and NQTs.

When my handsome 30-ish colleague reacts to a missed call from me with "you ok?" Instead of his previous "sorry I was on a call, feee now" because he's realised I'm struggling with menopause. It's an overreaction on his part but I'm grateful for his care nonetheless. But yes it makes me feel old
