Things that make you realise you’re not the spring chicken you thought you were

I had a shock recently re-watching Mamma Mia, I always identified with Sophie’s character age-wise, but realise I am now Donna’s age, assuming Donna is in her early 40s..
Anyone else go straight from being in their twenties to their forties without noticing? I swear I’ve lost a whole decade somewhere!

Another one - you go to the garden centre with your mum and both of you come out very happy with your clothing purchases.

Trying to slide new fence panels in with DH. I could barely lift my end.

I used to be able to shift wardrobes, I’ve dug a driveway out, moved the washing machine single handed and now I suddenly have no strength-despite having toned arms. I could barely lift the sledge hammer to swing it when doing something the other day!

When I look on Rightmove and realise I'm only 2 years off qualifying for the retirement properties on there

Walking down the street with my 22 year old DD (who is a bit of a looker to say the least) and know it's definitely not me getting the glances

Having people in my team who are young enough to be my children - and who think my stories of the tech we had when I first starting working are hilarious

Being given freebies recently at a make-up counter in a snazzy little bag - only to find they were anti ageing products. That hurt.

Trying to show my children the full crab pose that I used to be able to do easily - and realising I couldn't even lift myself off the ground

And on and on....

When I’m trying to find a gif on WhatsApp with a particular cultural reference and it isn’t there. Withnail and I is an absolute classic (and perfect for giggling about the committed carnivore guy whose online match booked their into a vegan restaurant for their first date 😂)and yet - nothing ☹️

OMG this is me! No strength at all, can’t lift anything even vaguely heavy, struggle to open jars or bottles (had to buy a gadget to help).
I’ve turned into a total wimp.

A friend and I went to watch our friend DJ a set at KoKo in Camden. It’s always attracted a younger crowd, but that was fine, because I’m totally part of the younger crowd, right?

On Saturday, friend and I must have been the oldest people there by at least 15 years and we felt like Mum and Dad crashing the school disco.

When I stopped buying women's magazines, i.e. Marie Claire, She etc. and bought gardening ones instead.

I subscribe to Gardener's World, so I really am getting on.

DextersLabAssistant · 03/08/2022 10:20

@ScarlettOHaraHamiltonKennedyButler aww I used to do that with my mum when I was little.

I once asked her if they had electricity back then...poor mum, she was born in 1967 hahaha 😳

chesterelly1 · 03/08/2022 10:23

When your child's history topic at school was something you also studied- in modern studies.

SirChenjins · 03/08/2022 10:43

That means your mum is only 2 years older than me! You're on the wrong thread, young 'un.

I ran for a bus, not far, not fast, but I had to run on a little to catch it. My knee still hurts several days later.

My face on Teams calls. Sad

So true!!

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 03/08/2022 10:50

I suddenly noticed lots of people were swooning over some bloke called Joseph Quinn. So, I popped my pince-nez on and have a google. I’d didn’t recognise him at all. Nor did I see the attraction. He looks like a student who works part time as a barista.

MissAmbrosia · 03/08/2022 10:51

Watching the Neighbours Finale, I was thinking how old everyone looked - and it occurred to me that Jane, Mike, Charleen, Scott are all roughly my age, and that I must be in denial. 😯😂

ThreeRingCircus · 03/08/2022 10:52

It happens with music all the time. David Gray Babylon was playing on the radio the other day and I was singing along....then realised it was released TWENTY THREE years ago! 😮

We're all Mrs Mangel now.

TheChosenTwo · 03/08/2022 10:56

Ffs this has just reminded me I tried to do a crab the other day in a PE lesson, I ended up with a crick in my neck, straining my back and pulling muscles in both arms. I still didn’t actually manage to successfully model a crab but the children did get to see me writhing around on the floor (in agony but pretending to be fine) like a deranged squid.

SanFranBear · 03/08/2022 10:58

Spent a day plodding around my house in bare feet... feet swelled up a bit, my heel hurt and they're still not right a couple of days later! I was renowned in my younger days of only owning one pair of shoes and these were flimsy flip flops - I now need fully cushioned shoes and insoles and clearly even need wear my slippers in my own home!

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 03/08/2022 10:58

My dd asked me innocently 'was telly in black and white when you were my age mum' and I got all indignant saying I'm not THAT old until I realised yes, my first telly was only black-and-white...
Although my defence is that was because we were poor not because I am old 😁

LittlePearl · 03/08/2022 11:01

We have a steeply sloping garden and I decided to show my two year old grandson how to do roly poly down the lawn.

Went way too fast (I'd had a Pimms 😂) and ended up in a dizzy heap unable to get up. Bruised all down one side where I rolled over some paving slabs, still sore 5 days later.

purplecorkheart · 03/08/2022 11:02

When I was the only person in the office who knew what a cheque was and how to write one.

germsandcoffee · 03/08/2022 11:02

When you realise your youngest child's teacher is younger than your oldest child 😳.
When your older than the headteacher 😳 .
When you try fill a form in online
And scrolling down the age brackets is like watching n episode of wheel of fortune 🤣

UnicornsDoExist · 03/08/2022 11:03

Yesterday was my first day of work after being a SAHM for 14 years. I looked at the young ladies working with me and thought I’m the oldie now. Everything has digitised and computerised, no paperwork anymore. Felt like such an old fart! I’m 49

Icecreamclassic · 03/08/2022 11:05

A nice looking man catches my eye and I realise that whilst no youngster himself, he must be at least 20 years younger than me 😆

When I was the only person in the office who knew what a cheque was and how to write one.

That reminds me of a recent conversation with my kids, they couldn’t believe we used to have a machine that would be swiped over your bank card and the imprint from it would be copied on to paper slips.
