I love Zara Ramm and Robert Glenister , especially reading the Cormoran Strike books. Any other suggestions would be most welcome. I can't listen to Jonathan Keeble though , hate his women's voices!

Michael Sheen reading Philip Pullman's Book of Dust.

Came here to say this! He is just perfect in his narration.

fudfootedfannybangle · 02/08/2022 12:54

@PeggyGa yes! Loved all three - apart from a character inconsistency where a brummie accent turned Spanish between books 2 and 3.

Jack Logan makes appearances too. And lots of mentions of “boy band”. 😂

PeggyGa · 02/08/2022 13:09

@fudfootedfannybangle what are you reading now? I’m in mourning that I have done all the Logan ones and now hoon.

jD Kirk recommended the Alex Kett ones but I’m not that impressed. Joy Ellis ones are good Nicky is the detective but I really like how funny the Logan ones are

I’ve changed my name!! It’s really cheered me up! @fudfootedfannybangle

fudfootedfannybangle · 02/08/2022 13:30

@Yajebbend 😁 excellent work! I put the Bob hoon books on in the car and it has the kids listening intently and howling.

I too have done all the j d Kirk ones, but he seems to release quickly so hopefully we won’t have long to wait.

I’ve found nothing on audible that come close to the sheer pleasure of those series’ - and so am working though the digital mountain on kindle for now.

fudfootedfannybangle · 02/08/2022 13:31

Quite funny really. I’m a serial name-changer, but you’ll always be able to spot me now.

CannaeRemember · 02/08/2022 13:43

Another vote for Perdita Weeks reading Circe. Really captures the essence of the character, imo.

LadyHelenaJustina · 02/08/2022 13:52

Christian Rodska reading Falco

Stephen Fry reading pretty much anything

Tony Robinson reading Pratchett
Phyllida Law reading SPQR
David Suchet or Hugh Fraser reading Poirot
Tim Harford, David Mitchell, Bill Bryson, and Robin Ince reading their own books

Anton Lesser (reading absolutely anything from The Mirror and the Light to the back of a cereal packet - if he could whisper it in my ear that would be even better.)

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 02/08/2022 14:24

Gemma Whelan is fantastic, and Juliet Stephenson is great for the classic stuff.

I agree re Jonathan Keeble - horrendous!

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 02/08/2022 14:26

Oh yes, and Michael Sheen. Just ace.

Yajebbend · 02/08/2022 15:31

@fudfootedfannybangle are you Scottish? I do wonder if I like it so much cause I’m Scottish and relate

Jansobieski · 02/08/2022 15:43

Joanne Frogatt reading Lisa Jewell.

LadyAddle · 02/08/2022 16:10

Another vote for David Monteath - lovely voice.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 02/08/2022 16:43

Does Sean Pertwee narrate anything? The phone book, the 1985 Argos catalogue? I think I might be up for that.
Anyone heard the new Bill Nighy versions of Pratchett? I bet he is a cracking Vimes.
I listened to Phillip Glenister doing the last Strike and at first I didn’t like it, thought Strike was too “ooo argh” for someone who’d grown up mostly in London. But just listened to earlier ones and didn’t mind it so much.

Beetlewings · 02/08/2022 16:54

Anne Marie Duff reading Tess of the D'Urbevilles is an absolute treat. She has a lovely storytelling voice.

Anything 'Toast Of London' thespy overacting is unlistenable to me

fudfootedfannybangle · 02/08/2022 17:39

@Yajebbend i am. Alas whilst holding out for Bob or Jack, it’s the Geoffs who make themselves known to me.

fud is much-loved word around here.

JammyDodgersandPeas · 01/08/2022 22:52

Kobna Holdbrook Smith reading the Rivers of London books!

Damn right. The man's a vocal genius.

MadameRanevskaya · 02/08/2022 19:26

Tom Hanks reading the Dutch House

SausagePourHomme · 02/08/2022 19:34

Also Amy Poehler and Tina Fey reading their own books, so blooming funny

I really like Greg Sestero reading his own book The Disaster Artist (which is gobsmacking and funny) but I am not sure if that's on audible. it's the story of a mysterious rich foreigner in LA, Tommy Wiseau, who with no experience or knowledge tries to make a movie starring himself, someone with no acting experience - the resulting movie, and the experiences that greg went through in being involved, are ridiculously bizarre

I really like Stephen King reading his own book 'on writing' as well. He can't half tell a story.

Elodie09 · 02/08/2022 19:44

@SausagePourHomme Stephen King is a genius. I had that book but will try it on audio now. thank you. I have just finished Stephen King's " Duma Key " read by John Slattery , I really liked it . Some american voices really grate on me.

David Rintoul. He reads (most of) the 44 Scotland Street series amongst many others. Such a great reader/actor. Love the voices he does.

HRTQueen · 03/08/2022 08:28

all of David Sedaris apart from text book much of it narrated by Tracy Ulman. I gave up as wanted to hear him tell his own stories

Adjoa Andoh reading Americanah is brilliant

I loved Stephen Fry Victorian series on Audible and Sherlock Holmes (working my way through slowly)

im often put off by very theatrical narration that you tent to get with classics

fudfootedfannybangle · 06/08/2022 10:39

@Yajebbend just stumbled across this - ready to have your feelings hurt? 😂

jdkirk.com/the-bob-hoon-insult-generator/

Danoo · 06/08/2022 10:45

That's why I can't bear Stephen Fry. My dd defends him as he read Harry Potter so well, but otherwise, it's so theatrical and over the top. Dial it down a notch !
I'm Irish so perhaps that's why I find it so OTT, I like a neutral RP accent but his is like RP with go faster I tread the boards stripes. Make it stop!!

I always click the five minute sample on an audible now. I didn't used to do that and ended up feeling tortured by bad narration but wanting the content.

CosmopolitanPlease · 06/08/2022 11:04

@RaininginDarling
I bought The Sea, The Sea narrated by Richard E Grant on your recommendation (well, and the similar reviews) and I am enjoying it so much! Thank you.

My favourite narrator I think is Fenella Woolgar. I love her reading Kate Atkinson books and Tracey Chevalier's A Single Thread, she has a wonderful period voice for books set in these times.

I also really enjoyed listening to Prunella Scales reading Elizabeth Gaskell, Ian Holm reading Wilkie Collins, Hugh Fraser reading Agatha Christie, Martin Jarvis reading William Brown and Bill Bryson reading his own works.

I only listen to autobiographies if they're narrated by the author; Adam Buxton, Limmy, Gyles Brandreth and Bob Mortimer's have all been great.

Can you tell I love Audible? Grin
