@HeyJackKerouac I tend to start with things like home, learn, sport, lead, happy etc to get a feel for the topic and type of word. Anything over 20 similarity is worth pursuing.

i agree with the paying attention to the high numbers, like to see them increasing, often listen to the radio and input words from there. which can be nice and random @HeyJackKerouac

Politics, religion, science, medical, history, food, drink, animal, run, set, game, sport, information, nature, esoteric, wallpaper ( you'd be surprised how many times I get a hit with that, weirdly), that kind of thing. Then I hone it down depending which gets the highest. Not perfect by any means due to the infuriating nature of the game!

Not sure what it says about me that I immediately thought TARGET after getting 996!

@HeyJackKerouac I'm no expert but similar to others, I try a selection of starter words each time to get a feel for the area and a sense of whether I'm looking for a noun, advective, adverb etc (not always possible to tell at an early stage but sometimes it's clear). Typical starting words for me are things like animal, plant, happy, big, house, hotel, travel, quite. Agree with PP that anything over 20 is worth pursuing but I've learnt to try not to get caught up in loads of synonyms at that early stage. Very rarely I've got a very high hit early on but that's often not as helpful as you might assume as you've no context from other guesses.
