Seems like size 10 these days is considered 'large'?

Caveat: Yes, I know actual clothes sizes are all over the place and not necessarily a guide to weight/shape.

I'm in my mid 40s and I'd swear when I was a kid, 10 was considered 'slim', yet it often seems to be talked about now as though it's the porky side.

I don't think that all that many women naturally fall into being a size 8 - I'd consider 10 a normal 'slim' size, I don't think anyone who is a size 10 would ever be medically overweight, even really short women like me.

Older people like me - do you think attitudes have changed? Younger women - have you grown up with 10 talked about as though it was an undesirable size to be?

Nobody sane thinks 10 is a big size.

I do,

Regardless of height?

If you’re size 20 then of course you won’t think size ten is large.

low

I have some clothes that I bought in the 70s. They are all size 10 or 12 and are significantly smaller than the size 10s and 12s I have now. I couldn't get into them at all.

pushions · 31/07/2022 13:19

meant to say lol!

You can think size 10 is not big without being a size 20 but you know that...

You must not know many people.

Fozzleyplum · 31/07/2022 13:20

Up to about the mid 80's, a size 10 was a 24" waist. I am less sure about the bust and hip measurements, but I would guess a 10 hip then, would be no more than about 34 inches. If you needed an 8, you were really tiny, with a 22 inch waist.

I am 5'8" and weigh 9st 12, with size 8 feet. There is no way that I would have got even my hip bones into an 80s size 8 - my frame is just too big- but I now have nothing in my wardrobe bigger than a size 10.

takeitandleaveit · 31/07/2022 13:20

I'm 60 and to me, sizes 10-14 were considered normal - and still are. I was on the slim side, but at nearly 5'8" I'd have had trouble getting into a 10 simply due to bone structure.

BellePeppa · 31/07/2022 13:20

Back in the 70s/80s ten was the smallest adult dress size you could get. A few places stocked an 8 but not many and you would be super slim to have an 8. About 20 years ago I went on holiday to the US and was shocked to find clothes in 00, 0, and 2-6, I couldn’t work out how you could be and adult in those smaller sizes and still be alive?

CuttedUpDress · 31/07/2022 13:21

Clothes sizes are bullshit.

I went clothes shopping the other day, I'm autistic and hate clothes shopping so only do it once a year.

My stretchy jeans from primark are a 12. The dress from new look is an 8.

T shirts from primark - some are XS, some are S and one is M.

I'm 5ft6, I weigh a smidge under 9st.

pushions · 31/07/2022 13:21

@JosephineGH so you would think someone taller was big if a size 10?

Mennex · 31/07/2022 13:22

I'ma 10 bottoms 14 top due to large breasts which make me look much fatter than I am. Nonetheless, I have a belly and could do with losing a stone. I find it weird that I can fit into 10 trousers in Ma and S, Next, Boohoo etc. H and M I not ally have to go up to a 12. So I don't think the sizes are standardised anymore. I certainly don't look slim.

MintyGreenDreams · 31/07/2022 13:27

Vanity sizing is a joke.Im a 12 top as large busted but actually bought a size 6 t shirt in Tesco the other day.The 10 was the equivalent of a 16.

SemperIdem · 31/07/2022 13:28

@JosephineGH

Interesting take.

How much do you weigh?

constantias · 31/07/2022 13:28

"Nobody sane thinks 10 is a big size."

I do, and know very few people over that size. If you’re size 20 then of course you won’t think size ten is large.

I'm a size 8, sometimes 6, (and not petite/short at 5ft 6) and I don't think size 10 is large...

randomsabreuse · 31/07/2022 13:29

There is definitely less variety in shape but more sizes. Everything is just scaled up or down.

I struggle with sizes as I'm a 28K bust, but I have fairly broad shoulders in relation to my chest width. I'd not ever be able to wear a tailored jacket in less than a 10, some 10s are not wide enough in the shoulder (bone structure/muscle).

Over my waist I used to struggle with 10s being too big but couldn't get an 8 over hips/bum. 2 kids later I'm more even there.

However getting clothes that actually fit my shape (somewhat hourglass but expanded middle) is a real struggle.

Agree. Of course she does!

BellePeppa · 31/07/2022 13:33

Back in 70s/80s I was 5’6” and 8.5 stone (53.9 kg) on a good day (under a lot as well as I was skinny and couldn’t put weight on). I was a size 10 mostly with some size 8s if available. How can anyone think size 10 is big?

That's not a rational view, the PP you were quoting is right.

You sound like you have serious body image issues.

It's simply impossible that you don't know anybody over a size 10. Just not credible at all. You know the UK average is 16?

amylou8 · 31/07/2022 13:38

Clothing sizes have changed. I sell vintage clothes and what was a 14 in the 70s and 80s would now be 10. This is an 80s size 14 M&S skirt, to fit a 27 inch waist. A size 10 is now a 28 inch waist.

Seems like size 10 these days is considered 'large'?
pushions · 31/07/2022 13:38

I know a lot, but the difference is down to the demographic that I currently know and my background. The average female BMI in France is 24.6, whereas in the UK it’s 27.1, which is a significant difference.

I'm half French & French women particularly older ones don't generally have a healthy attitude to food ime plus obesity is growing

pushions · 31/07/2022 13:41

the language is very telling. I mean why even mention obesity & size 20 etc when the OP is about a size 10. Lots of self loathing I guess.

LaurieFairyCake · 31/07/2022 13:42

I'm 5 pounds away from clinically obese and a size 10

LouisCatorze · 31/07/2022 13:42

DD is a size 6, very lean and tall. She has been gifted an 80s ballgown. The original owner was a size 10 to 12. The dress is very slightly too big around the boobs, otherwise it's a perfect fit.

constantias · 31/07/2022 13:43

Agreed @DirectionToPerfection and running the risk of being dramatic I'd say that's a 'dangerous' thing to go around stating.
