Parking next to someone

SpaghettiSquash · 29/07/2022 10:26

I am sitting in my car in a supermarket car park which is half empty. I just needed to reply to a text before getting out. A stupid woman in a big 4x4 has just
parked in the space next to me and is very close which means I will have to carefully squeeze out of my car.

WTF do people do this? There are loads of empty spaces! I'm not near the shop entrance. Opposite me I can count 24 empty bays all in a row and there are plenty of other spaces free.

You never miss an opportunity to be gratuitously unpleasant, do you?

She has a valid point. If she has no spatial awareness, why is she driving?

Transformatio · 31/07/2022 10:49

I guess it makes it easier to park but even so...I still don't really get it. It drives DH nuts for some reason, him going nuts about it when it happens so frequently drives me nuts!

I came back to my car the other day (sports centre but sports centre was shut for refurbishment so there were only three cars in the whole place and had been like that all day) to find someone had parked so close to mine I really struggled to get in, and at first thought I would have to go in via the passenger door!

OberthursGrizzledSkipper · 31/07/2022 11:22

Happens to me all the time too. Sadly my car seems to be a van magnet and I always find it surrounded by vans.

I once drove into a totally empty MFI car park, picked a space on the far side about halfway along and as we were getting out of the car someone drove in and into the space next to us. DH wouldn't let me ask them WTF they had to park there so I got back in and moved it.

I was going to start a similar thread after going to the work canteen for breakfast. Almost empty and it's a huge room. One man at a table one side, 4 people at a table near the servery and me the opposite side. Two men come in with coffee having a loud discussion and sit on the sofa that's up against my table. There are 10 pairs of sofas all around the room and I wasn't in a particular spot that people prefer. I am sitting quietly and don't want to listen to someone else's conversation. It drives me mad.

Just another example of the entitlement shown by people in cars. Not her, you! It's a car park, she can park wherever she likes. If you have to squeeze out, the issue is with whoever designed the car parks. Stop being so entitled.

This pisses me off so much. The other day the parent and child spaces were all full as usual so we parked in the next bit of the car park that was nearly empty as almost closing time (and a fair walk from the shops). We have 2 young kids and prams to deal with so made sure there was plenty of space around us.
When we came back 30 mins later there was a car either side, one in front and one either side of the one in front. Why???? The rest of the car park was sodding empty 😡.

😂 the entitlement of you! Actually being angry at people parking in a car park. Hilarious.

It’s not about being entitled. Some people need a little extra space to get in and out of the car.
I will often park in the emptiest section of the carpark away from entrance to wherever it is we are going, so that I can take my baby out of the back. The back passenger door needs to be opened wide to do this especially if he falls asleep and I am taking out the car seat too. Do you know how what it’s like to come back to the car to find that because someone has parked on top of you that you can’t open the door to put the baby into the car. Sometimes you can put the car seat in from the other side and other times I have been blocked in from both sides. How can I look after my baby in his buggy and move to a spot where we can get into the car.
If you want to park next to someone go park in the busy section of the car park. It’s not hard. The people parked by themselves in the far end of the car park might actually have a reason to park there.

you clearly are either a twat or lucky enough to have not yet had ANY real world experiance... giving you the benefit of the doubt that its the later and your just painfully ignorant then you'll feel like a right plonker once you have matured a bit.

Unbelievable 🙄

Janesdufflecoat · 31/07/2022 16:38

I think the same phenomenon applies to deserted beaches - someone always comes along & plonks their towel down right next to yours despite miles of open space!

Snazzysausage · 31/07/2022 18:21

I was on my way home from work one afternoon and called in to a retail park on the outskirts of where I worked.I parked at the far end of the car park, just me and a large estate car about 10 or 11 spaces along. Came out and was almost back to my car when a heavily pregnant lady,in tears, shouted and asked if I would help her. A 4x4 had parked so close she couldn't even get up the side of her car,let alone get in. Her car had a high centre console so you couldn't just shuffle in from the passenger side either. She stood crying while I wriggled between the two and reversed out for her. I was so angry on her behalf, that some prat thought that was acceptable. As she said, she'd parked in the middle of nowhere so she could open the car door wide. What sort of mentality do people have that blocking a drivers door is deemed ok,let alone when there's dozens of other spaces free.

How was the other driver ever supposed to know that? Honestly, you park in a car park, you're fully aware someone may park next to you.

I travel by bus/train/taxi to do the shopping, and did so with my baby and still do with my now young child. So to the person who questioned my life experience, I challenge people who think their needs in a car park are the most important, to get some actual life experience. Pampered attitudes.

Drivers don't seem to care that people walking with children or prams may need to use the actual pavement. Because drivers always put their own needs first. As shown by most of the replies here. I've even had plenty of cars blocking the paths around the car parks because they drive their wheels right to the edge of the kerb and their entire bonnet sticks out over the pavement. Blocking me with my pram. And possibly wheelchair users.

Anyone parking in a regular car park space needs to expect another car to park next to them. It isn't selfish, it's exactly what they're for.

Seriously?

And no, it's not about the car park design. Some people park too close. Or have cars that are too big. Or both.

Yes, when the car park is reasonably busy. But when there are eg 40 spaces and there are about 3 cars in the car park, why would you park directly next to someone else? Unless you know it is going to fill up very soon anyway. A possible exception being station car parks where you will generally want to be as close to the platforms as possible.

I would move my car but this kind of behaviour perplexes me too!
I'd parked my car once in a virtually empty car park. Started walking away and another car pulled in next to mine and I heard a thud as their door hit mine. I walked back and inspected my car (no damage thankfully) and driver looked suitably embarrassed. I had a bit of a go at them and asked, given rest of the car park was empty why the hell they had parked so close to my car. I was really annoyed..

Did they have an explanation?

What do you mean "How was the other driver ever supposed to know that?"
Of course the other driver knew he /she was too close or they shouldn't be driving.
Pregnant lady was already parked up,4x4 driver parked so close on her driver's side she couldn't get to her door let alone get in. I had to do an interpretation of a gymnast to get in and reverse out for her. The 4x4 prat parked way too close to her car and stopped her getting in. Are you saying in your opinion that's perfectly fine?
🙄

I’d done it because it was as hot day and that particular space had the best shade

Well in that situation it would be understandable, so I'd have just told the tosser that.

It’s happened to us before at the beach. We’ll set up a blanket on an almost empty beach and another family comes along and set up so close we’re practically sharing a picnic. I don’t think I’ll ever understand it.

This. We can be on an empty, huge beach in the middle of nowhere and if anyone else turns up you can pretty much guarantee they'll plonk themselves down a couple of metres from us. Why? Happened to us on a remote Scottish beach last month. The new arrivals had guitars and started a campfire! They had their pick of about a mile of beautiful beach but were clearly drawn to us. Maybe I should be flattered.

Because its very basic common sense an naturally occuring to all considerate people.

If someone DELIBERATELY avoids the packed busy area and parks at the furthest empty point its CLEARLY because they need extra space.

What on earth other reason do you possibly think someone is parking as far away as possible could be for?

Also this perfect example of your ignorance... your running your mouth about something you have NEVER experianced.

I only learned to drive recently, I HAVE been in your position too but you havent been in mine so your the one that doesnt have the experiance.

What your complaining about also has fuck all to do with this thread, yes some prick park like twats on the pavement and dropped curbs, I complain about them to the council regularly (they also effect other drivers btw its NOT just a pedestrian issue, thats why the highway code make a lot of those thing illegal) but thats nothing to do with parking next to other cars.

We were on a boat, tied up at a mooring with plenty of other spaces, no one else there. Someone moored their boat so close they hit our dinghy that was attached at the back! Lucky they didn't do any damage but why? They had at least 10, if not more, spaces to moor up so why? And they had a bloody dog that kept barking at the wild life. We moved.

PeloAddict · 01/08/2022 14:42

I parked in the middle of nowhere in a car park (no actual end spaces) as I had spinal surgery and needed the door fully open to get out
Came back and someone was parked next to me
Couldn't use the disabled spots as I didn't have a blue badge so I ended up (after getting someone to move my car) using a parent and child space if I couldn't get an end space

But I dont understand your logic AT ALL.

You know we might need access so you drive past every other empty space to deliberately remove the only car theres access from them under the wierd though that other cars who in future could and would park anywhere else in the empty car park 'may' also need access so you should park as close as possible to the only car there?

eh?

Thats the most backwards logic I have ever heard, it doesnt even make one ounce of sense.
