Parking next to someone

I am sitting in my car in a supermarket car park which is half empty. I just needed to reply to a text before getting out. A stupid woman in a big 4x4 has just
parked in the space next to me and is very close which means I will have to carefully squeeze out of my car.

WTF do people do this? There are loads of empty spaces! I'm not near the shop entrance. Opposite me I can count 24 empty bays all in a row and there are plenty of other spaces free.

I always park next to another car as I can ensure I'm properly in the middle of one space then. If I park in a random space on an empty car park you can always guarantee I've parked over the lines so I'm not fully in one space .

No idea but I just get up and move.

I do too if it's not a commuter train which I know will get full.

I sometimes park next to people in a car park too. Especially if the bays are not marked, as it is easier to line up next to someone. Also, it should mean that more cars can fit in the car park, as if you park randomly you will end up with spaces that are too small for cars to fit in.

No need to do it in a normal car park with marked bays though. One time when I was in a nearly completely empty car park someone came and parked next to me so I moved.

The more irritating thing is when you find a space in a car park and then realise at the last minute someone is sitting in it, and they give you a hard stare as you reverse in (actually giving me a hard stare is distracting and I am more likely to hit your car, not less!). Very unreasonably I want people to get out of the car and go somewhere else Grin

Maybe I can throw some light on why people might do this. You might be able to see the lines when parking, but I'm too short to see them once I've started to move between them.

When I park my car I can't actually see the lines once I am driving into a space. So I line up from a bit further back where I can see them, and then remember where they are. I park the best I can and then open the door to check/adjust before leaving the car. Ideally I get far enough back so that I can see the lines and approach them straight on, but if the rows are close together and the car park is busy then it can be difficult to get positioned far enough back to make this work.

Often I can rely on the lines in a row ahead, but if the car park is an odd shape and the rows aren't all parallel then this doesn't work.

It's much easier to use an already parked car for guidance as I can see that all the time. I do park in the next-but-one spot if possible though.

I'm short (5 foot-ish) and I don't have this problem! If I need to, I angle my wing mirror down or open my door to check, but generally I'm fine.

I hate parking next to other people's cars or them parking next to me if the car park is pretty empty. There's just no need!

WonderingWanda · 29/07/2022 18:47

They do it on beaches as well. Miles of empty sand and they sit right in front of you and put up a fuck of great big tented village with a windbreak courtyard!

If your driving and judgment is that poor that you can’t park between two white lines in an empty car park you really need extra lessons. How do you cope on main roads when you have to pass a cyclist if you have no spatial awareness? In fact how did you pass your driving test?

You never miss an opportunity to be gratuitously unpleasant, do you?

SingingInParadise · 29/07/2022 19:05

Sorry OP but I park where I want and where it’s more convenient to me. As long as that car was parked within the lines, I’m not sure you have any right to grumble tbh.

SingingInParadise · 29/07/2022 19:07

Fwiw, when that car arrived and you were texting, how was the driver supposed to know that you were planning to stay and get out of your car rather than leave after you had finished??

Is your rule about never parking next to someone also applies to cars that are ready to go?

LimboLass · 29/07/2022 19:19

I dont get this either. One can only assume people that do this are so crap at parking they need a car next to theirs to line up against.

Please resign your license.

When I first passed my test I used to squeeze into spaces to practice my parking. Now I have children it drives me mad when others do the same. I’m very sorry to all the people I parked next to unnecessarily !

watcherintherye · 29/07/2022 19:33

The only time I might park next to another car in a fairly empty car park is if it’s a hot day, and my chosen space is in shade.

Fifthtimelucky · 29/07/2022 19:45

@watcherintherye you have just beaten me to it.

In certain car parks I have been in recently there are only a few spaces in shade. Everyone (including me) has been congregating in those.

RedWingBoots · 29/07/2022 19:55

LondonQueen · 29/07/2022 13:44

This is why I park across 4 bays in my big car, even if they park next to you there is room to manoeuvre.

I park in 2 if I know the carpark but then I park at the back.

There are also carparks were certain bays mean you have extra space as no-one can park next to you.

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 29/07/2022 20:10

This pisses me off so much. The other day the parent and child spaces were all full as usual so we parked in the next bit of the car park that was nearly empty as almost closing time (and a fair walk from the shops). We have 2 young kids and prams to deal with so made sure there was plenty of space around us.
When we came back 30 mins later there was a car either side, one in front and one either side of the one in front. Why???? The rest of the car park was sodding empty 😡.

KatherineJaneway · 30/07/2022 07:21

Surely all the people who 'line up against another car to ensure they are in the centre of the lines' have a working door, window and wing mirror? Really not hard to use these to see where your car is in relation to the lines.

mam0918 · 30/07/2022 10:03

Orhe · 29/07/2022 18:21

My DH does this, it drives me nuts because I hate when someone parks right beside me in an empty carpark. His reasoning is thiefs will target the most isolated car like a lion targets a straggling wildebeest. As if the tesco carpark resembles the savannah.

My car got broken into... it was not alone, it was in a car park between a resteraunt and fast food place surround by other cars, break in was seen by witnesses and on CCTV but the police did nothing dispite this.

Years ago I saw some chav break into a car to steal money from the center console bit, he did it in broad daylight in a packed car park in the center of town with CCTV cameras and even came over to ask US to help him because he cut himself quite badly on the glass and was bleeding (not mature but we just ran away, we where only 14 and wanted to be nowhere near him).

Parking next to another car does fuck all to protect you.

mam0918 · 30/07/2022 10:12

Im a new driver (only been driving 5 years but didnt drive 2 years due to lockdown) and Im a nervous and I'll admit not the greatest driver ever (slow and easily paniced).

I also have a 20+ year old car with no cameras/modcons.

But I'm utterly shocked by the number of experianced drivers claiming they can't park in an empty bay.

Can you not stay in the lines on the road either? its the same principle although the amount of times I see people hugging the centeral line on roads maybe this is an epidemic of shit driving.

Its REALLY not hard and is surely one of the easiest and most basic manovers, I honestly worry now that people who cant park between 2 lines without using other cars as crash barriers to guide them are allowed to be driving around.

Also if you do park 'over the line' in an empty bay you have hurt nothing, it takes 10 seconds to re-adjust to be in the lines and if you dont bother doing that you will NEVER improve and learn to drive properly.

Go to an empty car park ASAP and practice for god (and every other person parking in the future car parks you visits) sake.

I'm disabled, my child is disabled and my mother and father are disabled.

We regularly have medical appointments, the healthcare center where we live shares a car park with 3 stores.

The carpark is wierd lay out so the disabled bays are closest to the row of stores in the busiest part of the carpark and usually full where as the side by the healthcare center is usually empty.

You can only have 1 person in an appointment with you:

My mam knows my dads medical history best so goes in with him but I drive.

I go in with my DS or for my own appointments but have 2 other children, DH works near the center so comes and sits with them while I go in using his lunch break.

So there is pretty much always someone waiting in the car, we still need to be abled to open the doors fully to get people back in the car.

Its pretty common sense that someone sat in a car not moving is WAITING.

Why would some twat park right up against us (regardless of if we are in the car) when they could park ANYWHERE else? it speaks to the pure privilage of never having to struggle getting in and out.

HairyMcLarie · 29/07/2022 11:37

This happens in campsites too. I can tell you it is really fucking annoying when you have to sleep in breathing distance of these people not just enter and exit your car by them.

A whole mainly empty 250 space campsite and you have set up there?! Fuckers.

Haha ..that reminds me of the time a tent pitched up during the night next to my parents' motorhome. They opened their window in the morning and the tent campers were literally underneath, leaning on the van ShockConfusedGrin

SpaghettiSquash · 29/07/2022 11:31

I did move my car. The point I was trying to make was why do people do this!

I hope you moved to the other side of her car and parked close to her door so she only have the minimum space to get in.

HairyMcLarie · 31/07/2022 01:36

We stayed overnight at a completely empty campsite in California. Masses of pitches available with full privacy. We parked up our van and walked out to the local tavern for some food. When we got back the campsite remained empty except for the spot directly opposite us which was occupied by a tiny van and approximately 6 young blokes who had built a massive fire and were yelling and squealing at each other and drinking endless beers.
The fire got progressively bigger and once they had ran out of the wood they brought with them they went off into the woods behind us to break off branches to chuck on. The fire ended up being akin to a municipal bonfire about half a metre from our van at 4am which they were breaking their bottles into. Even if we wanted to leave we couldn't as they had blocked our exit.
Fucking terrifying! They ended up leaving at 6am with the fire still half raging as they all tried to piss it out before they left.

Brigante9 · 31/07/2022 10:41

Changing a sudden flat in a car park in the woods and some knobhead tries to park close to the side we were changing the tyre. I was like ‘WTF!’ Utterly stupid.
