Heartbreak by a thousand small cuts

DH was admitted to our local hospice on Friday. He has terminal brain tumours. His short term memory is not great and he is really confused, not dissimilar to dementia.

He's just called me. It was so nice to answer that call because he hasn't shown any interest in his phone for a couple of weeks. He sounded almost normal when he greeted me. And then he started talking about going to work. And asking where I work. And didn't ask about the kids. This is so fucking painful.

I cannot begin to imagine what you are all going through. Sending you all a massive hug.

He's still plodding on but declining. A big dip in the last couple of days - totally bed bound, soft food, meds delivered by syringe driver. He didn't drink anything for me today, I think he's forgotten how to suck through his straw but I didn't want to draw too much attention to it because I had the kids with me. I'll go first thing tomorrow and have a chat with the staff.

It's a slow and painful loss of everything that makes him him but he's comfortable. And the children are just amazing, great first week back at school.

I’m so very sorry, OP. No one should have to go through what you and your family are going through. Life can be wonderful but also, as you are experiencing, brutally and savagely cruel.

I have cried and cried and cried today. He hasn't eaten. He was barely awake. I'm going to miss the silly sod so much.

Plant I’m so sorry I’ve gone through it with my Father and that was so painful. Never knowing what any visit is going to be like is so hard on your heart.

Hello Plant, you are so wonderful to be walking alongside him so faithfully and with such strength in his final bit of the journey.

Your tears are the flip side of your tremendous love for him ... the pain we feel when we are losing someone beloved is a reflection of the love we have for them. It's horrendously painful, but it has a deep meaning.

I am so sorry you are experiencing this. I have no words of wisdom but wanted to acknowledge how hard this must be for you, for him and your families.
