Are there more wheels than doors in the world?

We’re having an argument!

Dd and I think doors, Ds is adamant it’s wheels.

Do you own a wheeled suitcase or two? That's 2 wheels per suitcase right there.

takeitandleaveit · 24/07/2022 15:33

I have 31 doors in my house - 34 if you count the washing machine, the microwave and the bread bin.

Shortjanet · 24/07/2022 15:35

This might drive me mad. Trying to work it out but keep thinking of more things with doors and wheels. They're everywhere! There are doors on lockers, changing rooms, toilet cubicles, kitchen cupboards. Re wheels of course it's not just cars. Bikes, pushchairs, prams, shopping trolleys, toys. Everywhere, I tell you!

RomeoOscarXrayIndigoEcho · 24/07/2022 15:35

Wheels. I own three pairs of quad roller skates so that's 24 wheels, have spare wheels for the skates. I have a bike.

I haven't even started counting other things with wheels.

The wheel is/was a more important invention than the door so I think wheels.

Shortjanet · 24/07/2022 15:36

Ok, I'm going to go for doors. My rationale being that cars are an obviously wheely thing but most have more doors than wheels anyway.

You need to look beyond cars.

There are huge number of mechanical things in the world that use wheels. Cars probably aren't even the main thing.

I'm really surprised people think that the wheels on their car are the only wheels they own! For most people this is definitely not true. Just look around you.

Car wheels/steering wheel
Lawn mower wheels
Wheelie bin wheels
Bicycle wheels
I'm looking, I'm looking...
Oh casters on the furniture, DS' computer chairs. Desk attached to high sleeper has 2 little wheels that pull out.
I think that's about it though

Doors - shed doors, kitchen cupboard doors (loads), internal doors, external doors, bathroom cabinets. Tbf I have loads of doors.

I really don't know the answer now 🤯

Octomore · 24/07/2022 15:39

Anything that works on a pulley system will contain a few wheels too.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 24/07/2022 15:39

Are gates counted as doors? They are functioning as doors, but with a lot of gaps in them…

Octomore · 24/07/2022 15:41

Lots of pull put drawer systems will use wheels in their design too. They're not visible unless you take the drawer fully out.

I have lots of drawers in my kitchen, can probably add two wheels for each of those.

Yes but the same is true for doors. As soon as you start thinking of everything which has a door they soon add up! Re cars I hadn't even thought of the door on the petrol cap. Tbh could be either couldn't it?

Octomore · 24/07/2022 15:44

I just checked and the sideboard in my living room has 4 per drawer - 2 on each side. That's an extra 8 for my living room.

Got to be wheels, they are everywhere, have a think about it!

Oh god you're right. I've forgotten the hoover and the wheels on all the drawers.

I'm going to have to get a clipboard out and conduct. survey of my house (not even joking) 😆

😂

I think doors are a bit easier to see at first glance, whereas wheels are more likely to be hidden. There are wheels under your car bonnet too, and probably on the interior of your washing machine....

I don't think I'd actually be able to do an accurate count of the wheels in my house as I'd have to take the appliances apart. 😂

Crunchymum · 24/07/2022 15:51

Wheels for me. Has to be wheels. No real rhyme or reason, just my gut reaction.

Octomore · 24/07/2022 15:53

Just realised some more in my house - the sliding patio door and sliding shower screen both have wheels in the runners.

AliceMcK · 24/07/2022 15:54

Hhhmmm interesting argument just done a rough-tally in my head and we have 55 doors including cupboards etc… I gave up at 45 on wheels (car, bikes, scooters etc) when I started thinking about all the toy cars, prams and other toys we have with wheels and obviously all the toy cars have doors too…. Wheels would probably win in our house if I had the patience to count them all.

Octomore · 24/07/2022 15:55

My shower screen has 6 wheels on its own. This could actually drive me mad....

UnreasonableSheep · 24/07/2022 15:56

The definition of wheel would exclude some of the things mentioned like "wheels" in machinery or blinds (I'd say they're cogs or gears).

Wheel: noun: a circular object that revolves on an axle and is fixed below a vehicle or other object to enable it to move easily over the ground.
"a chair on wheels"

Oo the definition for door is also more restrictive than some of the ideas on here. So no advent calendars etc.

Door: noun: a hinged, sliding, or revolving barrier at the entrance to a building, room, or vehicle, or in the framework of a cupboard.

We've probably got about 150-200 wheels at home including all the wheels on toys. I think doors is at the lower end of that range. I think I would go with more doors than wheels but it would be a very close run thing. What swings it for me is that I'm pretty sure offices have far more doors than wheels due to cupboards. I can't think of many places that would have a lot more wheels than doors. Maybe warehouses? Possibly hospitals..

Octomore · 24/07/2022 15:57

I've excluded cogs tbf

Spudlet · 24/07/2022 15:57

What are we counting as wheel? Are cogs counted as wheels? Because if you have an electric fan there are a few cogs in there, plus the gear wheels on a bike, in a car, in other machinery… I’d imagine there are cogs in a fan oven or anything else with parts that spin…

So if those count as wheels, I’m definitely Team Wheel!

But offices have wheely chairs?

Octomore · 24/07/2022 16:01

A pulley wheel is definitely a wheel in my book, provided it doesnt have teeth. Because its purpose is to rotate and reduce friction, which is the fundamental of what wheels are for. Same with e.g. drawer wheels.

I wouldn't count bike gear cogs etc..

Friolero · 24/07/2022 16:02

Based on my house it would definitely be wheels but that's because DS is obsessed with toy vehicles and has hundreds.

Thinking more widely I'd probably still go with wheels.
