DH tried to block me doing OU degree

A few years ago I asked for advice re doing an Open University degree in secret, as DH didn't want me to do one and was putting every kind of barrier in my way, including telling me I'm too thick and should accept my limitations. So many people on MN were hugely encouraging to me and it made a massive difference to me, giving me the nudge to stand up and say "I'm doing this, with or without your support".

I've just completed the fourth of six modules of the degree, each one with a distinction, and although I'm still being sneered at and getting eye rolls, I'm bloody chuffed with myself. It's tough, I find it really hard going at times, and I'm not always confident I'm even going to pass a module, let alone get good scores, and yet here I am. If anyone who encouraged me is reading this, thank you. If anyone else is in a similar situation, please let me be an encouraging voice telling you to go for it.

Congratulations on what you have achieved @DegreeRebel and I truly mean this but I don't see why encouraging you to do a degree in secret solved any of the real issues?

If I'd seen your original thread I'd have been telling you to leave your vile, nasty husband. I appreciate there are a multitude of reasons you couldn't / didn't. I hope the degree is part of a bigger plan for you to get rid 🙏

Congratulations on your fabulous scores so far. I work for the OU and sadly, your story of not having support from family is not an uncommon one. Well done for keeping on going - not long to go to get that degree! You can do it!

Well done!

Why are you with someone who sneers at you?

That's a huge achievement!

Your next achievement will be to leave that absolute fucking cunt.

There's an old/ish film (1983) called 'Educating Rita' starring Juli Walters, if you have never seen it, give it a go, it's basically about a woman, anxious to do better for herself through education, and the obstacles she comes up against through lack of support from her husband and family, I won't say any more in case you do decide to watch it but when I read your thread it really reminded me. Well done anyway...you've certainly given me some inspiration.

Thank you for so many lovely comments, inspiring stories and some very interesting suggestions. So good to read about other OU experiences. I really appreciate all your posts. Wish we could "like" and "love" posts on here!

Long term, as some have suggested, I’m taking things one step at a time. I hear you, though. I'm about to start a new career in a role I've always wanted, and I need to plan things around the children, but for now I'm doing fine. I have some friends who’ve really been great cheerleaders, in multiple ways. Still two more modules to go, but I’m buoyed up and ready for ‘em. Thanks, lovely MN vipers.
