And I'm really quite scared what's going to happen 😭

He's a drama queen.

Are you a bot? It does feel more and more that the right wing have planted people in to jump on every new thread. They were very good at it for Brexit and Boris Johnson's election. But now it feels everywhere and people are falling for it. Around this and the green agenda.

HinchcliffeandMurgatroyd · 19/07/2022 23:23

cakeorwine · 19/07/2022 23:22

So what.

All these people saying they fixed - well done you.

This is not about him. This is about an energy crisis and bill crisis. There will be social effects. And it's coming soon.

The “so what” is that his advice isn’t as infallible as it is taken to be. I am concerned that people are landing in the shit because his brand is now so strong that people blindly believe him.

Chevyimpala67 · 19/07/2022 23:24

It's really worrying.
I locked in a new 5 year fixed mortgage rate in January. 1.27%.
I think next month the BofE will up the base rate by 0.5 % at least. I can see 3% by eoy.
We are going to up our energy dd to £300 pm to try and get some credit on the account before November/December. (It was £100 pm back in March and we were in credit..)
Our food bill is increasing weekly it seems.
But what I'm finding really worrying is the lack of workers/staff. And the cost of everything is becoming prohibitive imo.
We are on a holiday in a beautiful part of the UK atm (thank god its 12 degrees cooler than home atm!)
Every single cafe, bar and restaurant has signs up trying to recruit staff.
We have seen 3 separate cafes/pubs/bars in the past 24 hours with signs on the door saying they are closed due to no staff.
These ^ are all in busy tourist areas.
The cost of eating out is now eye watering...
£14 for 2 pieces of cake, a coffee and a juice 😮
We tried to eat out earlier today but we were told it was a 45/50 minute wait for food...just not enough staff.
We have paid £1800 for a week to rent a (very nice) house.
Luckily have an EV so don't need to buy fuel as its £2 per litre here. I reckon that would have added another £250 to the cost of the holiday?
I can't see us being able to holiday again for a while tbh. Which is OK. There are people who could die this winter.
And our next PM could be Liz Truss...
God help us all 😞

Maybe the OP should have started the thread with the title.

Energy bills to rise by 64% for many in October.

This has fuck all to do with advice and the fact that energy bills are going to rise in October.

There is no advice there. It's a fact

So all this stuff about ML is irrelevant

How about:

Inflation at 11% soon, energy up 64% in October and interest rates to rise?

I meant his advice last winter, sadly.

I still can’t get that tweet to load so I’m just taking the gist of his current advice from your comments, but I’m afraid that sounds more realistic, unlike his earlier “don’t fix” mantra.

But I’ve been saying endlessly to my adult DC, and EXH and my three really good friends not to follow his or any advice without doing your own maths and your own thinking.

The words “Martin Lewis” are in the thread title. Which is why so many many of us are commenting on the variable quality of his changing advice.

PutinSmellsPassItOn · 19/07/2022 23:33

Been saying for ages we're already in a recession. People just arent spending money, most the shops in my town have closed over the last two years..... Even our supermarkets are quiet. Branded items are piling up because they aren't selling yet cheaper options are flying of the shelves.

We've sleepwalked our way into this........ And now all anyone can do is bicker over who does and who doesnt qualify for a 600 quid cost of living payment. Watch the media use the usual types and their tales of wasting it to deflect attention away from the fuck ups in charge that have caused so much misery.

You do understand the difference between 'warning' and 'advice'.

Advice - don't fix. Not good advice, but advice
Warning - energy costs predicted to rise by 64%

I can see the difference. WIth your critical thinking skills, can you?

Fifteentoes · 19/07/2022 23:35

He's making a mountain out of a molehill, just like all the people prattling on about "climate change" just because the UK's temperature records are being broken and people are dying in wildfires across western Europe.

The really important question is, "what's on telly tonight?"

Most people never fixed. Even 2 or 3 years ago when you could fix at hundreds of pounds a year below the price cap and Martin Lewis was on TV all the time telling people to fix, around two thirds never did and were on the price cap anyway. So the number of people who would have fixed but then decided not to will be very small.

HinchcliffeandMurgatroyd · 19/07/2022 23:35

You’re being a bit aggressive @cakeorwine

Don’t you think, honestly, it would be better if Which or NACAB, or some other consumer advice body, were the go to people for this kind of commentary? A single financial journalist has taken on an outsized role.

You mean OFGEM

www.lbc.co.uk/news/energy-bills-could-hit-3200-in-october-ofgem-warning/

This is going to happen.

Iliveonahill · 19/07/2022 23:40

Two years ago my energy bill was £70 month. Now it is £150 and octopus have emailed me to say that next month it will be £190. My usage has not changed, infact it’s slightly reduced. Christ knows what it will be in October. I will be able to pay it as I’m lucky to save each month - but that will be my monthly savings being used for energy.

Silverswirl · 19/07/2022 23:40

Catfordthefifth · 19/07/2022 22:30

He's literally presenting facts. How is that dramatic?

Gas and electric is going up again. Mortgages going up. Wages aren't.

That's not dramatic, it's the truth.

Not true in all cases. Depends where you work. I’ve just been given a 17% pay rise. Company are extremely worried about retention right now.

Lily7050 · 19/07/2022 23:40

Not sure why anyone is surprised.
There have been lockdowns over the past two years and sanctions against Russia recently.

HinchcliffeandMurgatroyd · 19/07/2022 23:41

cakeorwine · 19/07/2022 23:38

😂

I don’t think I do. What they can say is quite specific and circumscribed.

cakeorwine · 19/07/2022 23:42

And you know what's really bad and worrying?
It's how few people are talking about it.
I have mentioned it at work. To friends. It's not even talked about much on here. The media have mentioned it a bit.
The Tory candidates for PM think that Rishi has provided support for people already.

Many people in this country don't have much disposable income. October - when people start to use more energy - is going to see even more hardship.

Sometimes, I can see how Cassandra felt

willithappen · 19/07/2022 23:43

Anyone sorting their energy PLEASE do not get dragged into your direct debit amount and think about that!!

You NEED to look at your unit rates, not the dd you are being offered. There are so many falling into this trap.

MibsXX · 19/07/2022 23:43

BarbaraofSeville · 19/07/2022 22:44

It's not scaremongering.

Come October, Utility prices will have more than tripled in under 2 years. You used to be able to get a fix that was cheaper than the price cap so about £900 per year for the standard amount of energy. In October the same amount of energy will cost £3300, nearly four times as much, so an enormous increase that will really be felt by anyone who doesn't have a lot of disposable income.

That's on top of the increases in food, petrol/diesel and mortgage interest rates increasing. Many many people will be in the red every month and will either be getting further into debt or won't be able to afford sufficient heating and food.

Most MPs haven't got a clue what it's like to live like that and we haven't really felt the full scale of the increases yet. A lot of people will be currently robbing Peter to pay Paul, using up savings, cutting back where they can, but after a few months of that, the savings run out and they can't cut back any more and then the October price rise kicks in, anyone on prepay faces the double whammy of higher unit prices and higher winter usage and suddenly they can't keep the lights on and have money available for other essentials.

One thing people do need to do is have realistic conversations about what Christmas is going to look like because the last thing a lot of people need is to get dragged into a cycle of exchanging crap that no-one wants or needs when they'd be better off using their money towards basic essentials.

Trust me, some of us are beyond struggling now, we're only eating 3 meals a week now... water is keeping us feeling full in between..we're renting and I know we wont be able to afford any more hikes.. we're already way behind on the council tax and I foresee a bleak homeless christmas. Might have been ok if covid hadnt stolen 6 weeks of pay from us .....................hard to catch up when no help given, and there were charges on top of charges being applied for the inevitable late payments, we got behind by around 500, which has now balloooned to 2K just with the charges and fees

HinchcliffeandMurgatroyd · 19/07/2022 23:44

And I’ve nowhere said the price rises won’t happen @cakeorwine - the opposite. That’s why I fixed. I think his winter advice was over simplistic and appalling and will cost people ££££s.

TBF @BarbaraofSeville makes a good point that the people who listen closely to him are a subset of a subset, but those are the people trying hard to engage with advice and make savings so I imagine some of them will be very unhappy that they listened to him.
