I see the Daily Mail are pushing the possibility of the fires being due to arsonists, which is something I've often heard my very right-wing mother saying about forest fires across the world. She doesn't want to accept that man-made global warming could be a factor. Why on earth would people deliberately start fires on a boiling hot day in numerous areas? What would be the point?

Who knows what the point is, but the fact is that many forest fires are started by arsonists worldwide. I guess they get some kind of thrill from it. A lot of fires are also started accidentally, it doesn't take much in hot dry conditions.

Many countries have fire bans in hot summers - isn't it about time the UK started to think about taking similar measures?

CosmopolitanPlease, many of these fires will have been started on purpose. No point asking why, stupidity, not realising the consequences, just wanted to see what would happen, a dare etc etc.

It happens across the world. In Australia and the US there have been instances of the arsonists being caught in the fires they started and burned to death. Few tears shed, tbh.

Climate change has led to the conditions which allow fires to take hold and spread. I despair at anyone who doesn't understand that. Even more at those who know it's happening and refuse to do anything to mitigate the effects.

My friend lived in Farm Close in Dagenham and her house is totally destroyed. She is currently on holiday and cannot get back for a couple of days. Her Mum had just moved in with her and had all her life’s treasured possessions in there. Heartbreaking.
