Teachers - most disliked profession on mumsnet?

369 replies

OhReally18 · 18/07/2022 22:31

In the last few days, I've seen a lot of teacher bashing on mumsnet. Even teachers giving other teachers a hard time. Seems like it could be one of the most disliked professions on mn. Is this a true reflection of how the rest of society feels?

I've been teaching in primary for a good few years and I have never experienced bad feelings towards teaching in real life, just on here and social media occasionally. Maybe the odd envious comment about holidays but that's it.

It's by no means harder than other professions but teachers are portrayed as lazy, moany, hard done by, ungrateful, the list goes on...
Is this fair? Surely it's no different to other professions?

@MistressIggi

It is true.

There's lots of articles and studies showing it to be true.

If you can find any showing teachers were at higher risk from covid than the general, working public, I'd love to see them.

While other people at work could wear masks, teachers couldn't. And not did their pupils. So of course they felt vulnerable. And none of us knew at that point, what the virus was doing to people.

It's great to use hindsight and look at statistics that appeared later (assuming they exist) saying that actually teachers didn't turn out to be at more risk of dying/ being seriously ill from Alpha or delta. But when we were all being told not to get near anyone else and always wear a mask, any teacher would feel insecure in a room of thirty pupils, unmasked.

I'm going to guess that none of the people who say that they shouldn't have been worried about it would voluntarily have walked into a small room of thirty unmasked people, given the limited knowledge we all had then. For goodness' sake, we were still queuing outside supermarkets with masks on, standing on two metre markings back then.

Teachers were not at higher risk from covid than any other member of the general public.
This isn't true. Unless you mean teachers were not at highest risk? As they weren't. But they were at an above average risk. And not hard to see why given so many people worked from home/were furloughed etc! I got horrified looks when I asked some friends if they were back in the office yet "oh no it wouldn't be safe" etc. However I do not generalise from this to make assumptions about all office workers Smile

No, they were not. Where are you getting the idea from that they were?

I haven't dismissed it. I read it and saw what it was, a guide to identifying health and safest issues at work. Which could, back then, start with a single case.

@echt

Here you go.

neu.org.uk/press-releases/neu-advises-primary-members-it-unsafe-return-work

We are writing to employers, urging them to look at the advice of SAGE, the Government’s scientific advisory group, and we are urging our members, on the basis of that science, to use our model letter to inform their head teacher that it is unsafe for them to be in school– in crowded buildings with no social distancing, no PPE and inadequate ventilation

Topgub · 19/07/2022 11:45

@saraclara

Why couldn't teachers wear masks?

You do know at the start of the pandemic health care workers weren't advised to wear them either?

It was weeks into it before they became mandatory and even then it was only for direct pt contact.

Its also not hindsight.

It was known at the time that schools weren't putting teachers at risk.

They were closed to increase compliance, not to protect teachers

And this is why teachers get a bad rep on Mumsnet.

calling every non teacher “stupid”

Case AND point. Well done 👏🏻

So the particular posters Echt was speaking to and which I referenced, are equivalent in your mind to all non-teachers?
You may be unwittingly demonstrating the specific point I was making...

I care not a jot for the reputation teachers have amongst some of the mumsnet users. I know two things: the reputation of some parents took a giant nosedive for me during lockdown due to the vile comments posted on here, so I care nothing for what they think of me; and secondly, that many many parents are appreciative of the work carried out by their schools and I am grateful to them for their support.

Topgub · 19/07/2022 11:47

@MistressIggi

You do know I can see you right?

Referring to me as 'the poster' doesn't make your unfounded personal attack any better

🤣

They couldn't wear masks because the govt said so.

My daughter is a nurse. A sister on a Covid ward through most of the worst of Covid. So I know what others were enduring. But she was furious that her teacher sister wasn't able to wear a mask. She thought the whole thing was appalling, and that neither she (who could only wear a blue mask, not an FFP2) nor her sister were being even close to adequately protected by their employers.

It is annoying when you express a view that maybe the lockdowns weren’t handled brilliantly and immediately you are ‘Us4Them’ Hmm

The absolute weird obsession some have with that is just - well, weird.

I'm not sure why you think a comment that UFT are "out in force" was made in response to one stand alone comment from yourself? Why would it be?

Why? Would it feel better if it was a doctor/engineer?

No profession was referred to in the "can't argue with stupid" post.

I might be retired but I still have a red pen.
It's case IN point.

See, we all need teachers!

(Sorry, I couldn't resist)

Anyway, I can't believe that we're all still rehashing the dozens and dozens of threads like this from back when it was all happening.
It might be time to hide this one

You are just one of a list I'm afraid, you are flattering yourself that it was directed to you. "You can't argue with stupid" is a common saying and refers to arguments and the pointlessness of engaging with them, it is not the same as calling an individual stupid.
But then you know that, you're just hoping I get deleted.
Actually I don't even think your arguments are stupid, I think they are more sinister than that.

Topgub · 19/07/2022 11:59

@saraclara

I dont remember teachers being told they weren't allowed to wear masks.

I'm sure some of my kids teachers did.

I feel bad that so many teachers were told they were being put at risk when they weren't.

If they'd been told the truth (or maybe researched it themselves) maybe things would have been different

Topgub · 19/07/2022 12:01

@MistressIggi

Pointing out facts is sinister? OK.

If I wasn't the poster you were referring to, who was? As you clearly said 'the poster'?

I'm still waiting for you to disprove what I've said. I guess I shouldn't hold my breath

Topgub · 19/07/2022 12:02

There's plenty wrong with it.

But you asked for proof, there it is

Quite why you felt the need take out I was lying I'm not sure.

What would have been different? You do know it was the government who closed schools to the general student population don't you?

You haven't said what's wrong with it.

What on earth do you mean by "take out I was lying"?

Topgub · 19/07/2022 12:14

@MistressIggi

Did you actually read the link past the biased headline?

The ONS explains: “These occupations had probabilities that were statistically significantly higher than some at the lower end but were not statistically significantly different to those in the middle of the range.”

Its also discussing the risk of catching covid. Not of being ill or dying from it.

Its not always a risk to catch covid.

Do you have any links proving teachers were at higher risk than the general working public of becoming ill or dying from covid?

Topgub · 19/07/2022 12:16

@echt

I think I've made it pretty clear what I think was wrong with teachers refusing to do their jobs

Its a typo.

Make out.

You implied I was lying.

And instead of apologising for that you're continuing to be rude

Hotdrysunny · 19/07/2022 12:25

I didn’t @MistressIggi Confused

I think there are some stupid comments by both sides on here.
