DH won't close the Windows!

Blurp · 18/07/2022 15:53

Just a rant really... I heard on the news that the advice for hot weather is to close your windows once it's hotter outside than inside (and to keep curtains closed).

Told DH, who said "Pffft, that's stupid" and opened every window and door. So now it's absolutely boiling 🥵

Im working from home; he's off today so lazing about and doesn't really care how hot it is.

Anyone else unbearably hot and need to rant?

Depends on your house. We’d simply die if we closed all the doors and windows in my house because it becomes a fucking sauna!

Blurp · 18/07/2022 16:00

Ours is a sauna with them open! I can literally feel the hot air coming in the kitchen door. I tried closing it and couldn't feel that any more, but DH opened it again.

My windows are open. I close the curtains and blinds. Open the window in the room your in if that helps OP

NCHammer2022 · 18/07/2022 16:02

My DH keeps trying to do this. I’ve managed to keep the house bearable today while he’s been out at work, if he opens a single window or blind when he gets back he is sleeping in the shed.

BogRollBOGOF · 18/07/2022 16:03

Our windows are shut and covered on the outside to stop the sun coming in and creating a greenhouse effect.
It's about 24⁰C downstairs so 11 or 12⁰C cooler than outside.

TakeYourFinalPosition · 18/07/2022 16:06

It won't make a difference now, according to the heat expert on our local radio. You'd have needed to close them early this morning and keep them closed (and ideally covered with curtains etc) before it heated up. It's to minimise the amount of hot air that comes in.

But I really think whether this works depends a LOT on your house. It worked great in our flat, before I moved. It doesn't make the blindest bit of difference in our house, which has two rooms that are 23 degrees (10 degrees cooler than outside) and the rest is like living in the sun.

endofthelinefinally · 18/07/2022 16:08

We are inside with the windows and blinds closed and it is reasonably comfortable. The loo is on a north facing wall with a small window and is currently nice and cool, so I can always go in there for a while if it gets too hot elsewhere...
We had a parcel delivery earlier and the poor man was melting.

cooldarkroom · 18/07/2022 16:09

Any eventual air "breezing" in, is the same heat as the molten outside temperature.
Your Husband is an idiot.
Ideally you close everything & cover the windows so no sun penetrates. open again in the evening when the temp drops.
ps I live in a mediterranean country, & assure you this is what we do, its been above 35°C for weeks .

How do you cover them on the outside? I’d love to be able to do that.

OP it’s taken a lot of training but my DH finally gets it about closing windows as well as internal doors and the house is pleasant inside and burning hot outside. You have my absolute sympathy

rumred · 18/07/2022 16:19

He sounds like he doesn't respect you or your opinion. Is he always thoughtless about you?

Franca123 · 18/07/2022 16:22

My partner was really resistant at first. Just carry on the battle and he'll come round when he sees the difference. We're 10 degrees cooler than outside at the moment. It makes it bearable and we'll sleep better.

Wolfiefan · 18/07/2022 16:24

Our house is cooler if we have the windows open all the time. Maybe as we get a cool breeze here.

QueSyrahSyrah · 18/07/2022 16:26

Depends on the house, we're at the top of a breezy hill (and on the top floor of an apartment building) so keeping them wide open with venetian blinds mostly closed usually gets a nice breeze blowing through. With them closed the heat just sits.

AppleKatie · 18/07/2022 16:28

Living room is a good 10 degrees cooler than outside here and the curtains are drawn and windows shut, it really helps.

theclangersarecoming · 18/07/2022 16:30

We’ve kept windows and curtains closed today and it’s a pleasant 26 degrees in the living room at the moment - and at least 37 outside. It really does work.

sarahc336 · 18/07/2022 16:30

People who open windows in a heat wave are idiots if it's 33 inside the house and 37 outside all the air that'll blow in is hotter than what you already have in your house so you'll end up with a house at 37 degrees. Keep them shut until the sun has set then shut then again in the morning before it gets hot 🥵🥵

DecayedStrumpet · 18/07/2022 16:33

Does your husband have form for having zero common sense?

I had all our windows open 6am-9am, then closed them & the curtains.
Currently 26° in our living room and 37 outside.

Will reopen everything when (if?) temp outside drops below inside.

Also have covered the inside of a couple of upstairs windows with tin foil because I could feel the heat blasting off the curtains, that's also made a big difference in those rooms.

ComDummings · 18/07/2022 16:35

Mine are open because there’s a slight breeze even though it’s over 35 now. I tried closing the windows and it felt like I was inside an oven.

ComDummings · 18/07/2022 16:36

Just to add I do have the curtains closed though

I shut everything up at 10 and I wish I'd done it earlier . Downstairs is a bearable 26 and 39 outside. We have powerful fans on which help too.

SlouchingTowardsBethlehemAgain · 18/07/2022 16:45

Tell him he is not king of the fucking windows. We have had our windows closed and curtains drawn and are sitting comfortably in the dark. The dog has a fan on him.

I might have to do this. He has form for refusing to believe anything he's told if it doesn't sound like what he believes to be true. So it being said on the news doesn't count, because OBVIOUSLY it's nonsense.

I'm amazed at how cool our house is today. I opened all the windows and curtains at 5 am then closed everything up at 8am. Even the kitchen which is usually unbearable in the heat is cool. It really does work.

cherrypiepie · 18/07/2022 17:03

I have windows shut except for the velux in the top floor. But now rethinking the physics in that one.

It's nice and cool.

DDog took one strip outside and came back in.

swimlyn · 18/07/2022 17:05

You can’t argue with stupid…

For open windows, once you’ve gained the benefit of the cooler overnight temperatures you MUST shut the heat OUT as it rises outside. Having said that, there’s plenty of people here flinging their windows open to cool down…

Not that long ago we had posters on here arguing that they COOLED DOWN in their hot tubs at 40 degrees. (core body temp is 37) 😩

I sympathise OP. Luckily I married intelligent not stupid. We have an inside/outside temperature unit that was c.£15 on Amazon. A great buy!
