DH won't close the Windows!

Just a rant really... I heard on the news that the advice for hot weather is to close your windows once it's hotter outside than inside (and to keep curtains closed).

Told DH, who said "Pffft, that's stupid" and opened every window and door. So now it's absolutely boiling 🥵

Im working from home; he's off today so lazing about and doesn't really care how hot it is.

Anyone else unbearably hot and need to rant?

Well thanks to tip's on here we thought we would try hanging fabric outside the windows and I'm absolutely amazed at how well it's working!

We get peak sun at peak heat times ie 3pm.
I've just stepped outside the back door which has a duvet doubled up on it and a sheet. My backdoor is cool to the touch, and the air there. I pull back the duvet and was astonished to be hit by such heat!
I've never been so cool in a heat wave 🌊. On the other days we did have shaded windows open but because of the heat today we closed them at about 9am

It does work and all we did was hook them over the doors!

50mg · 18/07/2022 17:21

I admit I was skeptical but I have followed advice today and kept windows and curtains closed since about 9:30. It's still hot, but it has made a noticeable difference and it feels markedly cooler as you come in from outdoors.

colouringindoors · 18/07/2022 17:25

omg OP! Def ltb!

I closed mine at 9am. temp indoors is 25. temp outdoors at 4pm was 39! Opening the windows lets the heat in.... as you know...

colouringindoors · 18/07/2022 17:27

@RockandRollsuicide it makes an amazing difference doesn't it! I diy-ed an outdoor curtain for my big sliding door and this room is now habitable.... We need those shutters you get in Europe...

NeverTooLateToSing · 18/07/2022 17:27

Early this morning, I opened all windows wide to blow cool air into the house. Curtains closed on sunny sides. By 8am, all windows shut, curtains drawn, and I've draped some light cloth inside the kitchen windows. It's a pleasant 24 degrees C inside, and 37 (in the shade) outside. We also have pillar fans on.

I stepped outside to hang out washing, and it was brutal! The 'breeze' was like a hairdryer on hot, or opening an oven door during a roast! The washing baked on the line.

Nothing is getting opened again until the outside temp falls below the temp in the house!

GCAcademic · 18/07/2022 17:28

I’ve just come upstairs to find that my husband has opened all the windows to “get a breeze”. Yes, you fuckwit, a breeze of hot air which has now heated up the entire upstairs as if someone has had 50 hairdryers going. Utter idiot.

RockandRollsuicide · 18/07/2022 17:29

Colouring, my mind has been blown.
I've never felt so comfortable in heat in this house ever before..

Having said that I think we are in for a rough night but my goodness....it's been a miracle!

Even if tomorrow the house heat's up ,it's one day of pain we have been spared from!

hedgehogger1 · 18/07/2022 17:30

My house is 24 degrees. 36 outside. We opened windows last night when it was cool and closed them this morning

Mayvis · 18/07/2022 17:31

I cooled and shut the house up at 7am. Blinds and curtains drawn. Came home and husband had opened all the windows and doors to get a breeze through. 🙄

Notagardener · 18/07/2022 17:32

Unless sitting in an office; hot and smelly or just hot.
I keep windows open (only open 5cm)

RosieRoww · 18/07/2022 17:33

That depends on the house you have- we have 30 degrees in the shade outside and 25 in the house- all windows, doors opened since morning.

wtfisgoingonhere21 · 18/07/2022 17:39

I shut all the windows and blinds upstairs early this morning and shut the kitchen blinds as we are south facing.

Kept the back door and front door shut and had a tower fan on in the north facing lounge all day which is a nice cool temperature and the dogs aren't panting so all good here right now.

My car registered 32 an hour ago and my back garden registered over 40 in the sun.

My kitchen and bathroom floors are stone so nice and cool.

I have bins to put out and cardboard to fold up and load into my car but won't be doing that till about ten tonight.

Abracadabra12345 · 18/07/2022 16:16

How do you cover them on the outside? I’d love to be able to do that.

OP it’s taken a lot of training but my DH finally gets it about closing windows as well as internal doors and the house is pleasant inside and burning hot outside. You have my absolute sympathy

If you do it properly, you install thermal blinds on the outside of the windows. I'm a cheapskate and a procrastinator to boot so simply put emergency rescue blankets over the windows during a heatwave. Give it a try - you can always raid your first aid kit, then replace for pennies from Amazon. They're pretty amazing actually, thin enough to close the windows over them and let plenty of light through, but at the same time reflect most of the heat.

Etinoxaurus · 18/07/2022 17:48

Taken within a metre of each other.
Windows open since sunset last night then shut before 9am this morning.

DH won't close the Windows!

LinuxPenguinPCnerd · 18/07/2022 17:51

My windows are open because it's only 30 degrees here and I work in a lab that's 35 degrees all year in full PPE so it's cool to me 🤣

MissSmiley · 18/07/2022 18:10

My windows and curtains have been closed all day but the inside temperature is now heading for 30 degrees, it's 36 outside, can't wait to be able to open the windows at bedtime

summerlovinvibes · 18/07/2022 18:19

Def windows closed in this heat. If hotter outside than inside, then windows and curtains to stay shut. At ours it's 38 outside and 25 inside right now. Have had everything closed all day. If I was to open up now then house would just heat to outside temp.

Too late for you to do anything about it now, but leave them all wide over night to let it cool down and then start again in the morning x

Twattergy · 18/07/2022 18:24

My DH has only finally admitted that windows shouldn't be opened and curtains drawn on hot days since he read it in a newspaper this weekend. I'd been telling him for years and kept finding him opening blinds around the house on hot sunny days. It took 'experts' for him to listen. 😐

Thank you, I was looking into those emergency rescue blankets last night but being slow of thinking, couldn’t think how to secure them so stopped looking. As this is not going to be our last extreme heatwave, sadly, I shall copy you!

A great tip I got from MN was to line the insides of curtains with white so I ordered some white linings and did just that on our black out curtains. The difference it’s made is great : the bedroom is at a comfortable temperature even though the windows are burning hot. Heaven knows what temperature it would be if I had an eejit DH opening windows to let in the nice 39 degree “breeze”.

For the first time, I tried the feet-in-cold-water trick. Oh my, why have I never done this before?! It was utter bliss....

pastaandpesto · 18/07/2022 18:38

LTB, seriously!

Would you pour hot water into a warm bath in order to cool it down?!

LeavesOnTrees · 18/07/2022 18:40

It's like opening the windows in winter when it's snowing and expecting the house to warm up.

I've told him that this information came from experts, but he still doesn't believe it. Maybe he needs to hear it directly from the experts himself, but I'm not sure even that would do it!

Thankfully the worst of the heat seems to be over for the day, so the windows being open is cooling things down again.

Yes we have experimented, its about 26 with the windows open, and it was 34 here today maximum so I dont quite know why it doesnt work for us.
