Has anyone else noticed that Ukraine is back in the news again

MissConductUS · 04/08/2022 23:31

Ukraine may have hit a Russian naval patrol ship off the coast of Crimea. Hopefully, there will be more details or confirmation soon.

@minsmum I think I've noticed the complete opposite tbh. Website wise anyway, Ukraine (as far as I could see) didn't have any news updates on the BBC Webpage. Tv might be different but I don't usually watch the news on the Tv.

ISW

Key Takeaways

Ukraine is likely seizing the strategic initiative and forcing Russia to reallocate forces and reprioritize efforts in response to Ukrainian counteroffensive operations.

Russian forces attempted to advance northwest of Izyum.

Ukrainian forces conducted a series of localized counterattacks between Izyum and Slovyansk and regained positions in a number of settlements.

Russian forces continued ground attacks northeast and south of Bakhmut.

Russian troops continued attempts to advance on Pisky and conducted a limited ground attack southwest of Donetsk City.

Russian forces continued to transfer equipment and personnel to northeastern Kherson and western Zaporizhia Oblasts.

Ukraine is likely seizing the strategic initiative and forcing Russia to reallocate forces and reprioritize efforts in response to Ukrainian counteroffensive operations. Russian forces are increasingly transferring personnel and equipment to Kherson and western Zaporizhia Oblasts at the expense of their efforts to seize Slovyansk and Siversk, which they appear to have abandoned. Russian forces are also redeploying military equipment – artillery and aviation in particular – to Crimea from elsewhere in Ukraine. Russian forces have previously withdrawn from or suspended offensive operations on Kharkiv City and the southern axis to prioritize capturing Luhansk Oblast, but they did so on their own initiative based on the changing priorities of their commanders. Russian forces in this case appear to be responding to the Ukrainian counteroffensive threat in Kherson Oblast rather than deliberately choosing objectives on which to concentrate their efforts. Even after Ukrainian forces defeated the Russian attempt to seize Kyiv early in the war, the Russians were able to choose freely to concentrate their operations in the east. Ukraine’s preparations for the counteroffensive in Kherson and the initial operations in that counteroffensive combined with the dramatic weakening of Russian forces generally appear to be allowing Ukraine to begin actively shaping the course of the war for the first time.

It may be difficult to do a roundup for the next 7 days as I'm holiday (first one since Covid!) but Ill do my best.

Happy holidays @Ijsbear

The BBC World Service is still covering Ukraine developments in its news bulletins.

The website at www.bbc.co.uk/news
has from left to right on the banner across the top, in red, headers "Home", "War in Ukraine", "Cost of Living", "Coronavirus", "Climate", "UK", "World", "Business", "Politics" (and more)/ The War in Ukraine page has a "latest updates" under the main stories, and the most recent seems to have been posted at 9.38, one hour ago.

Take a break! You've earned it. I'll miss the updates, but you really have been working hard and need a little R&R. (In the old Army sense, not the new corporate one.)

Yes this! It's important to look after yourself.Brew

The war will still be there when you come back (alas).

DesdamonasHandkerchief · 05/08/2022 11:16

Enjoy your holiday Ijsbear, I'll also miss your updates, but my god it must be time consuming & not what you want to be doing on a well deserved holiday.

Thanks @AskingQuestionsAllTheTime. I'm just using my phone to check the news and I'm still not able to see Ukraine on the main page. Maybe it's the way I have my layouts set? Not sure.

Thanks @AskingQuestionsAllTheTime. I'm just using my phone to check the news and I'm still not able to see Ukraine on the main page. Maybe it's the way I have my layouts set? Not sure.

On a desktop machine running Mozilla Firefox, "War in Ukraine" has a page of its own, next to "Home" on the line across the top which I use to navigate around the site. I should think it is wherever you find links to any pages below/beyond the front page, but I can't help with where they might be because I don't have that sort of phone.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 05/08/2022 14:13

link to the page, I mean. I click on it, I get the Ukraine news page.

It is my considered opinion that the BBC website is one of the worst I have ever tried to deal with.

Lol. I believe the first shipment of Ukrainian grain on the cargo ship Razoni from Odesa made it through to Turkey. Joy, hope it is the first of many more that get through the Black Sea without incident.

A Ukrainian soldier fought at the front for three weeks with a broken spine — ZAXID.NET. The 44-year-old fighter turned to the doctors only when he started to feel pain in his lower back and his body temperature rose to 39 °C.

Poor thing. Just giving his all to the fight. The commitment is truly heroic.

Ukraine’s preparations for the counteroffensive in Kherson and the initial operations in that counteroffensive combined with the dramatic weakening of Russian forces generally appear to be allowing Ukraine to begin actively shaping the course of the war for the first time.

Glad to see so many countries giving more arms and weapons to Ukraine. Ukraine is at a turning point. Russia is now on the back foot for the first time.

China.

I sometimes encounter Chinese ‘state agents’ through my work. By that I mean people who work for Chinese state entities, or organisations and businesses that seem one step removed.

I am generally perplexed at various levels, and they may well be about me. My current assessments are:

  1. 4-2-1 puts massive responsibilities and expectations on 1.
  2. The CCP is incredibly powerful and important but…
  3. … it just doesn’t feel Communist in a way I can grasp (the ideology, among other things, is there to be sensed in my family tales from the former Soviet Union and Republican Spain, but China? No).
  4. With respect to Putin’s War, China will act in its interests that existed prior to it breaking out, but will exploit opportunities it opens up around the world.

… it just doesn’t feel Communist in a way I can grasp (the ideology, among other things, is there to be sensed in my family tales from the former Soviet Union and Republican Spain, but China? No).

@MMBaranova I do apologise for the generalisation and stereotyping. I am over simplifying. My instinct is that Chinese are businessmen at heart. Historically, at least in South East Asia, when Chinese move to another country, they set up businesses, often running state concessions and become very wealthy. They tend to stay out of the politics of the countries they migrate too, or do just enough to protect their holdings. No strong ideological views or principles. Money and pragmatism is their ideology.

I am sure the Chinese Communist Party is very ideologically driven. But ultimately the ordinary Chinese person is more driven to make money and maybe that is why you don't get the usual Communist vibe. I totally agree that China will act in its own interests and with ultimately a cool head.

Hillsmakeyoustrong · 05/08/2022 18:39

Ok so for those of us who had been residing under a rock before this war (definitely me) can I ask if this sense of a new world order is a common cycle in geopolitics or is there an unprecedented escalation happening?
