What’s with these XL Bullies?

Have just read that another of these dogs is responsible for a death.

I haven’t heard of them - what breed is this, a new one? Surely they should be banned?

Banning breeds doesn't work. Neither rspca or Blue Cross support BSL

Sorry ignore my random and

PutinSmellsPassItOn · 17/07/2022 22:58

They're large breeds that need owners who know what they're doing. Sadly they rarely get it.

We had an encounter with one recently, my ds has Autism and whilst he doesn't mind dogs cannot cope with them jumping at him. So of course the more he jumped and barked at him the more he.flapped and shouted. Because he was.terrified. DS was trying really hard to follow my instructions of standing quietly with arms down......which is easier said than done.

Owner had no control at all instead he screamed at my ds which only made things worse before resorting to kicking his dog in the stomach to get him to leave it alone.

They had a small child with them and as we approached the guy said don't worry. He's friendly 🙄 I felt extremely lucky to walk away uninjured that day. The power of the dog and lack of control was terrifying.

@opalescent I strongly disagree. My brother had a dog for many many years. She was 10, softest dog ever an he wasn't stupid he was early 30s at the time an had kids. One day it just turned on my Neice ? No reason for it or anything just turned. She was 10, not in a stupid dickheads hands she was a dog who they had as a family for many years and turned.
Being in irresponsible hands is a HUGE factor but this can also happen for no apparent reason, I will however say I think this breed needs to be banned as it terrifies me. I love dogs an have dogs but this breed makes me feel uneasy.

What do you disagree with? I've literally said, any dog can bite. Any dog has the potential.
The discussion on this thread is about XL bullies, and dogs who kill.

BeautifulWar · 17/07/2022 23:06

I know someone with two- lives in a rough estate and has small children. I find it baffling. You never seem to see them in nice areas 😳

Not necessarily true - some drug dealers earn a lot of money! It's the people that are rough, not always the area!

powershowerforanhour · 17/07/2022 23:07

"Some of the worst dog injuries l have nursed have been by a labrador and Jack Russell"

You were nursing them. Not embalming them.

Changenameobviousreasons · 16/07/2022 22:13

Wow. Basically, it's similar to the hysteria around rotties when I was tiny (80's and living with one), gsd's and staffies. In the wrong hands ANY dog should be banned.

Can't remember the last time anyone was mauled by a Chihuahua 🙄

Janedoe82 · 18/07/2022 00:00

Or a Cavapoo or Cockapoo or Bichon. 🙈

Faccthefacker · 18/07/2022 01:24

Off topic a bit, but having fallen down an internet wormhole on dog fatalities, the Canadian stats on breeds responsible are fascinating - it’s like someone flicked a switch at the beginning of the 2,000s.

My neighbour across the road has 3 XL bullies.
I'm a seasoned dog owner and these dogs scare the shit out of me.
They're this really...

Kastri · 18/07/2022 02:21

Theres no reason for this breed to even exist, plenty of other breeds to choose from.I would personally like to see them eradicated completely.

I own bull breed dogs. They should never be sold to an inexperienced owner and especially someone looking for a status symbol. I think its a combination of a powerful dog being badly bred and then handed to useless owners that causes fatalities. I think there should be some kind of licensing system in the uk where potential owners of any dog should have to pass a theory test on dogs in general and also on the particular breed the want to own before they are allowed to buy one.

I agree with this. As a dog lover I believe every single dog owner should be licensed. I also believe in mandatory neutering for non pedigree dogs, and that there should be some sort of grading system for pure bred dogs to make sure only healthy, temperament tested dogs are bred from.

Wideawakeandconfused · 18/07/2022 08:24

Any dog can bite. Any dog can turn.

But I’ll put my chances of serving a dog bite from a 9lb Westie than a 100lb plus bully type. That’s just simple science.

I do not want to met these dogs on the street, or while out walking my dogs. They are not pets. They were never breed for petting. Banning them is the only option. It’s not just a case of bad training or lack of exercise. They are built for something else completely. It’s a perfect storm.

Agree

It’s generally not the certain type of dog it’s the certain type of person that owns them.

That doesn't make sense though I have a beagle even if I was a terrible owner and she had an awful temperament, she wouldn't have the strength to cause much more than a nasty nip .

wetotter · 18/07/2022 09:25

she wouldn't have the strength to cause much more than a nasty nip

At risk of sounding pantomine, Oh Yes She Has

She could kill anything up to similar size as her pretty effectively, and could damage bigger creatures. So you could be looking at a dead cat, a dead toddler, a maimed child and an adult needing hospitalisation.

And if a dog - of any size - got an artery then you could be life threatening.

SpaceGoatFarm · 18/07/2022 09:34

It's the newest brand of meathead, spitting on the street, abusing your girlfriend in public dog.

SpaceGoatFarm · 18/07/2022 09:35

We are well past licensing owners, and I don't even know why breeders are allowed while there are thousands of homeless dogs already.

QuandaleDingle · 18/07/2022 09:37

Its because moronic chavs buy them to look "hard"

That is the long and short of it .

JuneOsborne · 18/07/2022 09:41

I can't believe you can just buy dogs on gumtree or whatever. Baffling. Zero controls, zero checks, zero comeback.

You can't buy a goldfish in pets at home without proving you have the right set up. (Rightly so!)

Why is it allowed?

puddingandsun · 18/07/2022 09:49

I think they should be banned. We are not doing these animals favours by letting irresponsible people breed and mistreat them. We clearly can't police who keeps them and for what purposes.

If there are any petitions going around - I'm happy to sign.

She really could.

I have a beagle and he has caught and killed a rabbit before - he could do a lot of damage to a small child or baby. While they're generally not aggressive, that doesn't mean they don't have the potential to be dangerous.

However they're nowhere near as dangerous as breeds like XL bullies.

Because it's almost impossible to regulate.
