National Museum of Scotland is great and free.

Mary Kings Close is good for history and a wee scare!

National Museum of Scotland has a History of Anatomy and Dissection Exhibition at the moment. ( you have to book I think)

Have seen some reviews and looks really, really good.

Go for a wander around the old town. Go to the national museum and then cross the road and go into greyfriars churchyard and have a look at the Covenanters prison (they were imprisoned in one of the gated tombs). Then walk down the royal mile (and while you're doing that have a look at some of the old wynds) to Cockburn street -i don't know what it's like now but it used to be the slightly alternative place to shop. The camera obscura is good value - not so much for the obscura itself or the views, though both are good, but for the optical illusions.

The vaults ghost tour will be nice and cool! Surgeons Hall museum, Gilmerton Cove is a bit off the beaten track but v interesting.

Also, look at what’s on at the modern art galleries to see if of interested and if so, take a walk from Stockbridge along the Water of Leith path to get there

My favourite place to eat. Quirky, cool…friendly atmosphere and great food. Your teens will love it.

After the National Museum, walk over to Greyfriar's Bobby then down to the Grassmarket for Armstrongs vintage clothes shop (teens love trying stuff on) and ice cream shop etc, then walk back up via Victoria St (red door gallery is a nice shop)

I second the underground vaults, spooky and interesting, we also did a day trip to loch ness and the highlands, enjoyable but a lot of time spent sitting on a coach.
