What does adult size 6 and 8 equate to?

I have a tall (and NOT a mumsnet willowy...) 11 year old. I'm trying to look at uniform/clothes for autumn and looking at 12-13 and 13-14 which got me wondering - at what point do they overlap with adults sizes? She has hips/tum/developing so shape wise would fill an adult shape but isnt adult height yet.

Presumably small adults can buy 9lder teen clothes?!

When buying school uniform, the sizes are often in inches/cm rather than ages e.g. a blouse being 32" chest. It can be easier to check the correct size like that rather than age or adult sizing.
Re shoe sizes, I find most girls feet stop growing around 12.
I would generally buy adult clothes for secondary school age girls, apart from uniform.

TrianglePlayer · 16/07/2022 17:08

My daughter is 13 and 5ft approx. She’s quite small all over and wears size 6 adult clothes. Trousers are often too long for her.

So a 13-14 could be a 6 8 or 10 so far 😁.

She is tall for 11 but wouldn't be tall for an adult so might be similar?

I find that kids sizes vary wildly! Dd is only just 12 and in size 6-8 she's 152cm but the 152cm height or age equivalent just doesn't fit!

both dd's feet stopped growing in year 7

I've found that ds and dd feet (and hands!) grew before bodies caught up

Jules912 · 16/07/2022 19:19

When I was a size 8 I could fit in age 13-14 clothes.

emmathedilemma · 16/07/2022 19:24

It depends on the store but at that size I could sometimes get into an 11-12 although they were often too short. I have cardigans for work that are out of sainsburys school range which are an age 14 and they still fit me at a size 10.

Is your DD about to go to secondary school? If so, I wouldn't buy her too many casual clothes for the autumn until she's seen what others are wearing. DD went from never caring about clothes at primary to doing the first mufti day at secondary school just wearing what she's worn for ages (leggings & a t shirt) to coming home from the second mufti day and asking if she could have some clothes for her birthday. She's not wanting to wear anything outrageous, just wanting to fit in with the crowd.
We went to a town about 45 mins away recently so she could get a better idea of what sorts of clothes were actually available but a condition was that she had to try something on in each shop so I could get an idea of sizing. She's 5'3"'and it turns out that Primark jeans are far too long in her. River Island petite were spot on though. It also gave her an idea of price points ... one thing from somewhere like SuperDry or two from River Island or an armful from Primark. Thinking about it, it was essentially a teaching her how to shop day as, previously, I'd just ordered a load of stuff for her from somewhere like Next or Sainsburys and we've sorted through it in her bedroom and taken back what she didn't like/didn't fit.

Girls generally stop growing a year after they've started their periods.

So if she's been a 6 for a year and been having periods all that time id assume you were pretty safe to assume she's stopped growing.

Especially if she's around 5"4-6 as that's average height for that shoe size.

VikingLady · 16/07/2022 19:49

My daughter is 10, usually wears 12-13 for length and is starting to develop curves already. She can wear size 6 and it fits. A lot are too low cut for her though, or expect a lot more boobage to fill out the front, so we have to pick higher neckline styles.

Mumoftwoinprimary · 16/07/2022 19:59

I’ve been wondering this.

Dd is 12 and about 5 foot 2. She is slim but not skinny. We’ve been looking at clothes for her today and I think - from looking at measurements online - she is between a 6 and a 8. I haven’t actually tried the clothes yet though.

She is very out of proportion though - her legs are as long as mine (and I am 5 foot 6 with longish legs) but sat down she is the same height as her nine year old brother who is only just out of a car booster seat!

voxnihili · 16/07/2022 20:09

I am 5 foot 6 and size 6 on top and 8 on the bottom. In summer dresses I can fit into an age 14 from New Look. For things with long sleeves or legs I tend to get a 15-16 as I need it for the length but they're far too wide - would usually only buy PJs etc for winter due to the sizing issue.

TheWayoftheLeaf · 16/07/2022 20:33

I guess she'd be petite range which usually is for 5'3 and under

ToastedCrumpetwithCheese · 16/07/2022 20:43

DD is about 5'3" and is nearly 13. She's slim but not tiny with a little bust and hips. She mostly wears a size 8 in regular high street places, sometimes a 6 if they're not too short. DD had to move to adult sizes for the leg length, the tween/teen sizes just weren't long enough.

PritiPatelsMaker · 16/07/2022 20:50

I'd also say a 6 was 12 to 13 years. That's what I wore before having the DC anyway.

@BiscoffSundae do you not own any tops that are not v neck? I don’t have a single v neck t shirt!
OP, I am a size 10 and can usually fit a 14-15

And me / if it’s next (which is more generous on the waist.

HelloDoris · 16/07/2022 21:24

My 11 year old (almost 12) is 5ft7 and in ladies size 12. Clothes for her age do not fit her, she is all hips and boobs, not particularly slim. But if she wore age 13-14 they would not fit at all. Bloody giant she is, taller then me, bigger shoes then me.. pah.

NauseousNancy · 16/07/2022 21:29

My daughter is 9, 5ft 1 and wearing an 8 for leggings for school from M&S. She has a size 8 rain jacket too, and has a few T-shirts from primary which are 6-8.

she is an age 13-14 in M&S for her school hoodies for comparison.

Vinorosso74 · 16/07/2022 21:54

My DD is now 12 and, at last measure, 166cm tall. She wears size 8 or 10 in adult. She started wearing some adult sizes, at 10 as kids clothes just weren't long enough and she started getting hips which most kids ranges don't cater for. We just have a problem that she needs longer length in jeans, joggers etc!
As for feet, mine stopped growing when I was 12/13. DD is a size 7 and it seems like everything still fits from a year ago so I hope they've stopped growing!

BugsInTheBed · 17/07/2022 09:36

Wow some tall kids (mine isnt quite as tall as me). When they're as tall as adults must be pretty clear they're going to fit qdult clothes I guess.

Huge envy of the adults in 6/8 that can fit kids clothes. I am sadly the other extreme.

Feet stopping growing at 12/13 wpuld mean me buying DMs now isnt a ridiculous thing to do. 🤞

The "stopping growing a year after puberty" is that height as well!? My eldest wont be as tall as me then and a little short for a woman. But if shoes still fit all good 🤣

Secomdary school uniform - do people need to buy this less often then?

My 11 year old is 171cms with size 8 feet. Adult 10. Adult 8 is too narrow in the shoulder and short in the sleeve. She's OK in 15-16 kids.

easyday · 17/07/2022 10:12

My daughter is 168cm and stopped growing age 12 (got her period age 11). She's filled out slightly since then (17 now) but mostly in the hip area. She's a 10-14 depending on brand, so 12 is what I'd buy her if she couldn't try on. Also XS to L depending on brand!
I think 13/14 is a 8-10, 15/16 is same as 10-12. I suppose the adult size would be more 'womanly' shaped - a 13/14 might be more straight.
