What does adult size 6 and 8 equate to?

I have a tall (and NOT a mumsnet willowy...) 11 year old. I'm trying to look at uniform/clothes for autumn and looking at 12-13 and 13-14 which got me wondering - at what point do they overlap with adults sizes? She has hips/tum/developing so shape wise would fill an adult shape but isnt adult height yet.

Presumably small adults can buy 9lder teen clothes?!

I'm a 10 on top & girls 13-14 tops fit me easily - it's the arm length that's usually the problem.

BiscoffSundae · 16/07/2022 13:54

Of course they can it’s more the style of things personally dresses for women I don’t like putting on my dd as they are more low cut etc usually and tops are usually the same it’s more the design rather than the size I like my daughter to still dress like a child not a mini adult.

BugsInTheBed · 16/07/2022 13:57

Bisco - I wasn't asking if they "can" more what the sizes equate to so i know what to order.

I'm talking t shirts/summer dresses not stripper clothes 🙄.

My daughter is age 15 & wears 6 or 8s in adult sizes. I’m the same size and could fit into 13-14 kids sizes. Neither of us are tall though 😂

BugsInTheBed · 16/07/2022 13:58

Thanks Groggy in my head I was imagining a 10 to be more 15-16 but no idea why I thought that!

OP posts:
BiscoffSundae · 16/07/2022 13:58

Most summer dresses are low cut though or just generally too grown up looking for an 11 year old even just the ones on the high street.

BugsInTheBed · 16/07/2022 13:59

So a 13-14 could be a 6 8 or 10 so far 😁.

She is tall for 11 but wouldn't be tall for an adult so might be similar?

Biscoff I assure you we must be looking in different places. She still has some unicorn clothing, and I tend to like simple clothes. Not all adult clothing is tarty...

SpaceJam33 · 16/07/2022 14:02

I’m a size 6 and would also buy 12-13. I’m 5 foot 4 if that makes a difference.

CinnamonStar · 16/07/2022 14:02

My dd is 14 and a women’s size 6.

Some age 11-12 kids things fit fine, others fit on the waist but are cut too straight for her hips, totally depends.

BiscoffSundae · 16/07/2022 14:04

I never used the term “tarty” that’s your own interpretation I said a lot of adult clothing is low cut or grown up looking you’ve decided that equals tarty, I was looking for a plain top for dd once and tried the adults section and couldn’t find any that wasn’t v necked. So yes it overlaps at a certain age but the child’s section is still needed for those reasons.

Smarshian · 16/07/2022 14:08

@BiscoffSundae do you not own any tops that are not v neck? I don’t have a single v neck t shirt!
OP, I am a size 10 and can usually fit a 14-15

Fizbosshoes · 16/07/2022 14:12

I'm a size 6-8 but very short (less than 5ft) age 12 tops and some other clothes usually fit me, but I've got bigger waist, hips and bum than a 12 year old. My top half is 32A or 30B.
DD is 15 and wears size 4 or xxs.

BugsInTheBed · 16/07/2022 14:12

Oh give up! I have a thread asking for size equivalents. Thankyou for telling me you wouldnt do this but then this isnt the thread for you! I have assured you my child looks fine - I am just after the sizing...

For anyone following (!) I have attached the Next sizing - if looking purely at waist size ( I was looking at shorts ) then

6 is 65cm which is the same as age 12-13
8 is 67.5 which is between 14 and 15!

Ive got the size charts saved now which does help.

Thanks for people's experience its really useful to know the rough equivalence.

Dd couldn't wear adult clothes until
She filled out at about 14/15 otherwise they hung wrongly in her
915 range from new look were her saviour at that age. I think that's what is was called.

BugsInTheBed · 16/07/2022 14:15

My older child is 14 and wears a 10 . Certainly at that age its very hard to find "childrens clothes" or teen clothes in shops so looking in adults comes sooner than you think! Also some teen clothes are about fast fashion and downright weird at times and not always right for basics.

LittleMissLego · 16/07/2022 14:15

Dd is 12, and around 1.52m. Shes a size 8-10 in adult clothes (she likes baggy clothes so will go for oversized hoodie in a 10 iyswim). Her school shirts are 14-15.

Coughee · 16/07/2022 14:15

My skinny but not tall 12 year old can sometimes get stuff at a size 6 or xxs in the adult section. She's wearing a pair of jogging bottom type shorts (iykwim) and a baggy t shirt in those sorts of sizes right now. None are remotely low cut or 'grown up' looking either.

ObviouslyNotNow · 16/07/2022 14:15

My 11yo can wear size 6, or age 12 (she’s tallish but still child shaped), but it varies a lot by shop.

dontgobaconmyheart · 16/07/2022 14:16

Last I worked in retail the Childrens size 13-14 was the equivalent of a ladies 8-10, leaning slightly on the smaller side IMO but depends on fit.

A ladies size 4 or 6 in the shops these days is tiny, I imagine you could easily cross over into adult sizes particularly in the shops that tend to cut for a slimmer build - Zara, River Island, Primark do a size xxs and xs which is a size 4-6.

PuttingDownRoots · 16/07/2022 14:18

My 11yo needed the XXS Scout shirt which is 4-6 in ladies sizes apparently. Sje is completely undeveloped as yet and it is baggy.

The problem is that ladies clothes sizes are completely random between shops.

RJnomore1 · 16/07/2022 14:19

My 17yo can wear ladies size 8 or teen 15-16 usually. Normal variation with sometimes a 6 or a 10.

Gufo · 16/07/2022 14:25

DD is 11 and wears a size 2 or 4 in Primark, or an age 12 anywhere else.

BugsInTheBed · 16/07/2022 14:27

Putting down - thats what started us thinking here! My husband came home with a scout "blouse" (for girls but looks v similar to the other one) in adult size 10 but the lady in the scout shop fitted it- it is on the big size as she will be there a while and they hardly wear themmbut not drowningly so! I doubt she'd usually wear a 10 as her sister does (different build though.)

Everyone's been so helpful. i cant scroll easily on my phone to mention you all by name but really appreciate it.

Shes taller and wider than an average age 12 so i imagine its age 14 she's equivalent too. I've not bought her clothes in ages!!!!
