What does adult size 6 and 8 equate to?

I have a tall (and NOT a mumsnet willowy...) 11 year old. I'm trying to look at uniform/clothes for autumn and looking at 12-13 and 13-14 which got me wondering - at what point do they overlap with adults sizes? She has hips/tum/developing so shape wise would fill an adult shape but isnt adult height yet.

Presumably small adults can buy 9lder teen clothes?!

Echoing another poster - New look generation is great. Their clothes are roughly equivalent to adult sizes just slightly differently fitted for where girls might not be quite “filled out” yet.

Was told in store recently age 14-15 is roughly a size 8-10 for example

SpacePotato · 16/07/2022 14:35

My 11 year old sounds similar.
As you say, small for 11 but not tall for an adult.

I started getting her adult size 6 on Asos but in the petite section so the length is better. She also found in a lot of places (like next) tween stuff was just very childish. Still full of unicorns and stupid slogans.

Just bought 2 dresses from New Look.
One age 13-14 and the other adult petite size 8.

It's trail and error as all the shops and concessions aren't consistent in sizing.

howdoesatoastermaketoast · 16/07/2022 14:39

Perfectly reasonable question to my mind...

My daughter is a fairly tiny 10 year old girl. She can wear adult size 4 6 and 8 depending on the shop and cut (but she rather likes baggy clothes) so will take her hoodies in a medium (unisex) or large (womans) for preference. Switching to women's sizes seemed to mean lower prices and more choice in many cases. Her latest leggings are a good fit at an adult size 6.

School shirts and trousers are a 12-13 year old size - ihth

DD could wear Primark size 6 trousers from about age 11/12 as she had long legs. Kids trousers were way too short and if we bought the right length they would be way too wide in the waist.

Adult size tops from anywhere would be the wrong proportions though, unless they were narrow across the shoulders and had a higher neck.

SpacePotato · 16/07/2022 14:42

*tall for 11 not small!

Bagpuss2022 · 16/07/2022 15:03

My DD is 12 and generally 12-13 equates to a 6 for her but she is very petit so some 12-13 are just too baggy and fall off her

Gwenhwyfar · 16/07/2022 15:12

I was wearing adult clothes from 12. That was many years ago though so maybe they didn't have teenage ranges then or not in my small town. I was a 12 then, but that 1990s 12 would be an 8-10 now.
I remember a woman in a shop at the time saying that the size 6s were mainly for pre-teens and teens and not many grown women used them.

ChandlersDad · 16/07/2022 15:12

My nearly 14 year old 50% height and weight centile is 5’2”/160cm and wears a Primark XS or 6 or 8.

I have some lovely clothes form when I was skinnier but the issue is the sleeve length. Presumably when they finish growing their arms are in proportion??

BlueBlueCowWondering · 16/07/2022 15:21

Presumably when they finish growing their arms are in proportion??

and legs - plenty of slim girls end with really short skirts as they haven't finished growling outwards yet.

Apologies. Hit post instead of edit

When I was a size 8 I used to buy a lots of 13-14 year old stuff from Tammy Girl (I was in my late teens/20’s). As I was 5 foot 2 and an A/small B cup the first was fine.

As I am only 5”2’ and not especially busy I find that many adult tops the v is too low! I expect your DD should be fine in size 6/8 or XS ladies clothes in casual clothes

BlueBlueCowWondering · 16/07/2022 15:23

(Although I suppose plenty of teens growl instead of speaking so 🤷🏾‍♀️)

StEthelburgaRose · 16/07/2022 15:24

This Next size chart compares age sizes and adult sizes which might give you a rough idea

What does adult size 6 and 8 equate to?
CeeceeBloomingdale · 16/07/2022 15:25

My 11yo and 15yo are the same width (size 6-8 in ladies sizes) but about 12” difference in height . The younger one will wear 12-13 or 13-14yrs in kids clothes too (from places like H&M which are quite narrow). Women’s petite ranges in small sizes are useful for tweens. I’m a size 12 and can fit into the older kids sizes. we progressed to ladies for most things as I find children’s clothes are more childish in style. It’s possible to buy women’s clothes for them that are still age appropriate.

fyn · 16/07/2022 15:27

At Next the age 16 clothes fit a size 12 adult if that is any help!

BugsInTheBed · 16/07/2022 15:40

Thanks everyone super helpful! :)

Its a strange age isn't it 12-16 when they are a bit between kids and adults for clothing.

Next question while I'm here.....

Anyone know when girls feet stop growing??!?! My nearly 14 year old wants DMs for school shoes. I only really want to do that if she isn't going to grow out of them. Like ever...

scout blouses are terrible sizing! I had to buy my then 10yr old a size 10 which was too wide and too short! My friends buy mens shirts and add darts :-) DD is now 13, wears size 14-15 school shirts and a size 8 in women. She is quite tall at 5'5 and finds children's clothing is often too short. She is quite skinny so wears a 6-8 in trousers, and a 24" waist school skirt.

BugsInTheBed · 16/07/2022 15:47

Oh glad to hear the Scouts sizing isn't usual - I initially thought my husband had just got it wrong but the lady had sized her and it doesn't look like a smaller one would fit !! (Got the size 10 similarly). They did say to allow space for a t shirt underneath in winter. I want it to last as dont want to be resewing badges every year...

She has to wear it next week to become a scout. She is going to boil!

Watercoloursky · 16/07/2022 15:49

I'm 5'1 and a size 6-8... I tend to buy shorts and trousers in the teen section as 'adult' ones generally come up too long, and usually I buy 12-13yr old, if that helps at all!

PuttingDownRoots · 16/07/2022 15:50

The Scout leader shirts are just as bad.

We don't think DDs shirt will last her the 4 years but its the only size that didn't look like it would double as her tent. She can fit in her younger sisters t shirts and shorts... she definitely dies not take after her mother!

ObviouslyNotNow · 16/07/2022 16:18

My 10yo has a size 10 Scouts blouse and it’s big but not stupidly so - they’re weird sizes. I would say it looks more like a size 6.

BugsInTheBed · 16/07/2022 16:22

That's reassuring - My child isn't willowy/thin so relieved it doesn't mean she's unusually large either!

So Shoes - when do girls feet stop growing!?

OP posts:
SwayingInTime · 16/07/2022 16:35

Mine get DMs only when their feet have stopped growing - so a good 18 months measured the same at the shoe shop basically. But they are good school shoes.

BugsInTheBed · 16/07/2022 16:46

What age was that Swaying? Her school shoes have lasted all year a size 6 and they still fit her... so thinking I might be lucky.

Yes - I think DMs are fab if she doesn't grow I am hoping they last (for ever)!

If they have a bit of growing room surely she wont grow out of them....

Thanks Groggy in my head I was imagining a 10 to be more 15-16 but no idea why I thought that!

I think you're right!
Apologies, I meant the largest girls size easily fits me which is prob 15-16 🙈
I should not comment on clothes & style threads!!!

To chuck more sizes in the mix I sometimes wear my sons age 10-11 PE hoodie 😂
