Schools and next weeks weather

The email I’m thankful to see. Due to being in London and on red alert for next weeks weather my kids primary is giving the option to collect from 1pm. They will also have a longer break time in the morning and keep them in at hotter times. Anybody else being given an option?

I think even if primary and secondary school children are a bit more hardy and have all the necessary protections, it will be parents with babies and toddlers on the school run or grandparents doing pick up. It's ok if you can drive in an air conditioned car but some people have to walk.

Freeze half a water bottle (or two) and top up the rest with cold water before setting off for school.

Bring suncream, a hat and plenty of drinks.

They will keep the classrooms cool with fans, have blinds down and limit outdoor play to shaded areas and short periods.

I don't understand all the hysteria.

Ok we are not built to live in high temperatures for long periods, but nevertheless, we are in Britain with access to plenty of water, suncream, fans, indoors, shade...

We are not going to be abandoned in the Sahara desert without so much as a sip of water. We are going to be in our usual place of work/school/home where we can adjust things for a couple of days until the weather settles down again.

The way some people are talking it's like they are prepping for a lockdown again.

@butttonnmooon ”they will keep the classroom cool with fans” 🤣🤣🤣🤣 where will these magic fans come from please?!?!? My classroom is sweltering with 30 teenagers in it and has been for weeks…. Not sure how you think many classrooms up and down the country will be ‘kept cool’….

That's the message I got from school so they have obviously managed to sort something out. I was saying what our school have said they will do to help.

Never did I say every school was supplying fans.

Ours (secondary) finishes at 12:15, and no ties/blazers need to be worn. They have a 15 minute walk home and are very fair, so am considering the options. Theres a pool next to school, so might meet then at 12:20 for a swim straight afetr school before driving them home.
School has no airco and I can imagine after Mondays heat, it will be unbearable on Tuesday. I might keep them home on Tuesday and find a river closeby for some swimming in the morning...

Buildings in Britain, particularly older buildings as many schools are, are usually designed to retain heat. Our infrastructure isn't designed for these sorts of temperatures, few places have air conditioning, we're not physically accustomed to this sort of heat, and it is going to present a high risk to a lot of people.

We walk to school, 25 minutes there and 25 minutes back. I'm debating whether or not to send DC in or whether they will get a conveniently timed "sick bug" to carry them through to the end of term (Wednesday). Eldest DC are supposed to be on a school trip on Tuesday, their end of term treat, which involves a two mile walk to the local nature reserve and a day spent there in an exposed area with little shade. School are insisting it goes ahead as "they'll cope".

Ours is go in wearing PE kit or uniform and they will play it by ear on if they will have out or indoor play

Secondary - finishing at 12.20 pm and have been in PE kits since Monday.

How does that work? My kids only have one set of pe kit, they'd be stinky after 2 days!
